I would have to consider myself one of the biggest BMW fanatics ever. However, one area that I feel that BMW is neglecting the market's desire for is a competitive convertible. There is no need to compare a BMW to a Mercedes...the BMW is just infinily better in my opinion. Yet I am envious of Merc's technology of making a hard top convertible. I have always felt that when you take a gorgeous coupe and make it into a convertible, you ruin the line of the car. Mercedes, among other companies, has found a way to alleviate the problem. I just wish that BMW would make their own mark on this growing trend. From what I can see the old style rag top is going out of style quickly...

Seems BMW is doing a reasonably good job with their all new 645Ci Convertible.

Including a steel folding roof is only a matter of time :fadein:

I am very aware of the 645. However one must admit that the coupe is much more attractive.

hmm... mercedes and bmw are different i wouldnt say one is better than other.. maybe one is better at doing some aspects of a car and the other is not..
and what i think .. bmw should not make contvertibles..they suck compared.. merc's are much better even though the bmw is better to drive....

phshaw...
There is nothing wrong with rag-tops. hard-top convertibles are cool, but add weight.
and what i think .. bmw should not make contvertibles..they suck compared..
and yea... what you think... Im sure you would think that BMW shouldn't make
convertible while staring at the Z8...(it was a sarcasm)

I dont particularly like the bmw convertables after riding in my mums 330ci convertable, you can instantly feel the skuttle shake when you drive off, and it definately doesnt feel as ridgid as the coupe's. But thats the price you pay for posing value! And lets face it thats pretty much top of the list for anyone who buys a bmw convertable!
U know you can buy hard winter tops for the soft top beemers? They dont fold though. I dont think there is enough boot space (or it would reduce it too much) in the majority of the bmw convertable range to do a fold away hard top. I mean look at the size of the SL merc, and the amount of that space thats actually available to use! Not much!

well
okay..
Z3 flopped..Z4 still does a bit better...
the merc CLS is better than the 645...
hmm... SL .. is good..
comparitively .. bmw should rather make passenger cars than sportcars they are so much better at doing that... and BMW arent sporty.. not that merc is .. but bmw is just neither sporty or stunning to look at.. at least the Sl is seen as a really good cruiser...

Well II think that you are all comparing the 3 series convertible to something like the Merc SL Or SLK. But they are different types of car. The 645 on the other hand in my opinion looks better than the coupe.

Honestly, I think BMW convertibles have lost their appeals for me. I owed many BMWs (still am, owner of E46 M3 and X5 4.4), but for convertibles, I think Mercedes are the way to go. If you want performance, then I would recommend the Boxster S.

What BMW is doing better than any other brand is to mix the sporty driving experience with the luxury required from a car of its category.Ok they are not as great to drive as a porsche or a ferrari but the new M3 csl just proved the potential of BMW of making true sports cars. As far as convertibles are concerned the new 645 ci is stunning, i saw it at the geneva motorshow and i couldnt get it out of my mind, the Z8 is another great convertible with timeless design although generally i am not a great fun of retro designs. The current m3 convertible would be the best looking and best convertible at this price range if it wasnt for the new fantastic c6 convertible. What BMW is missing right now is a true competitor for the king of convertibles the sl. I am sure that if they enter this category with a new 8 series they will take the crown 8)

I'm back :x :x :x :x :x
Please, don't compare Bmw and Mercedes-Benz in that segment, Bmw (almost)never does something innovative, they just wait and let Merc take the risks.
yes i like a convertible car but it affects it performance...you can compare a M3 with a M3 convertible and you can see that the convertible is heavier and it does not accelerate the same...if they were the i would surely buy a convertible

LOL! give me one other thing then the roof-thingy...
like the S-Class? LOL! the S is SO (!) old, the 7 is x10 better and let not talk innovative... cause the 7 is right up there...
the 6, the Z8, the Z4 (whole new car, unlike SLK..) X3, 1 series (abut thats just wrong IMO..) M5....
merc is MUCH MUCH more conservative then BMW... i'm not saying Merc suck.. but when it comes to innovative BMW is way a head!
ah.. and when it comes to driving pleasure as well :P

Wrong, believe me Merc will sell more S classes than Bmw will ever sell 7  and why is that :? Its a little bit understandable, when you know Merc has more of these$$$$, and the Z8 isn't even that good, as I remeber not much of those where sold.
BENZ rules bmw
i didn't say the Z8 was great.. its an OK+ car.. nothing more..lol! and as to the number of Z8 sold.. BMW said they will ONLY sell XXXX of them (i dont remember how many...) and yeah merc will sell more S cause OLD ppl are more conservative then young ppl.. and most ppl buying these kind of cars are old.. (most.. not all..)
but this is not a "who makes better car" question (BMW), its who's more innovative, and thats LOUD AND CLEAR, BMW :!:

I agree with Erez_Avital
sure merc has a lot of technologie but there cars are for old, rich, and fat guys who cant handle a manual transmission
Maybe the mercs are more innvative but they build cars that become more discounted from the road every year cause a computer controls everything
bmw makes are car for a real car lover who love to drive
BMW.

BMWs are drivers cars who enjoy getting from A to B with a bit of fun. Merc are for those who want to get from A to B in comfort and style. For GOD SAKE, look at F1, performance wise BMW piss all over merc (road cars too)!!! I'm a BMW fan, but believe you me, for the next few years BMW has nothing on Merc for road cars. It's like merc have gone two levels above BMW. FULL STOP!!!

What are you talking about? BMW is producing fantastic cars right now with great engines and innovative technology. The i drive which had been heavily criticised by the press when it first came out has been working out well recently. People just needed a little bit more time to adjust. The new s class which will replace the existing will have a similar system like the one used by BMW, simply BMW brings us the future of the automobiles now. The first V12 engine with direct injection was made by bmw,the headlights that change angles according to the steering wheel is another innovation and there are plenty more. The new m5 is just going to be the king of the super fast executive saloons. Just compare the v10 high reving engine of BMW with the easy solution of installing a compressor or a turbo,i cant understand why you say that mercedes is two levels above BMW. The new 6 coupe is a great car, in evo or car i read an article where they prefered it from a sl500. Lets not talk about SUVs 8)

Like I said, BMW like to make performance drivers cars. Mercedes is up there with Aston Martin/Bentley........ALMOST!!!!!

If you consider bmws performance cars what is a porsche or a ferrari, what BMW does is to mix luxury with performance and driving pleasure. As far as luxury is concerned BMW is among the best in the automotive industry, if you dont see that i think you should try driving a 7 series or a 5 series. If you ve been in one of these cars then you are biassed towards BMW.
