Uhm.. need feedback about the Jaguar X-type

Ok as short as possible (as always :P)

For my mom's husband (not my dad, to long to explain LOL and useless too) it's time to change car (he does that every third year).. now he drives one of the crappiest cars around LOL, a Hyundai XG30 V6... but well, he likes cars from the east and their reliability.. the car before the Xg was a Toyota Camry 2.2 wagon.. again crap..

But now finally he found a good offer for a car that doesn't come from the east :D it's a 2002 Jaguar X-type 3.0 V6 with AWD transmission..

He is interested especially because finally he'd like a AWD car since this year he had quite some problems with snow and he would like a change too :D

He is quite BIG, maybe better huge LOL... some 190 cm high and 130 kg probably... maybe some more.. but he already tested the X and he found it comfy for him..

The big question is about the AWD system.. so far in our family we had just a few AWD cars.. one was a 964 Carrera 4, the present one is an A4 2.8.. and for sure Jag's AWD is not a match for Audi's quattro... but is it at least any good? Of course I will read around the net, but I would like to see if somebody has personal experience with an AWD X-type already...
it's also a good offer: he will give back the 3 years old XG and will have to pay just some 20'000 - 23'000 USD for it...

Any feedback for him while I browse around the net? :D

Bah , the Hyuinday XG is a good good car , reviewed very possitive by R&T , the Jag is not very good for what ive read in RT , Try getting an audi

Well it's quite hard to influence him... for sure he won't buy an Audi he consider them to expensive and not comfy enough.. he could try the new A6 but he doesn't like to spend to much money on his car and you can't find second hand A6 (new series I mean)

The X-type's AWD system is perfectly good, it does tend to promote understeer, though no more so than in any front drive car. My dad's girlfriend (yet another story too long to explain here) lives in Scotland and her company car this year is a Jag X-type 3.0 AWD, and she's had to use its winter capabilities a few times this year. As far as I know she's loved it and is thinking about getting another one.

Thanks dude :D and anyway he doesn't need a sporty car, he won't take part in drift competition or such :D he just need a comfy car that won't get stuck in snow w/o chains :D

hehe...right-o...the only thing about the X-type is that it really isn't THAT big...he may have tried it, but can he still carry 3 passengers comfortably if he's driving?

They have a 2003 Renault Grand Espace when they need to go around with the family :D The Jag will be for him only.

Well, no he isn't a driver enthousiast :D he just drive quite a lot since he works in 3 different hospitals and he often has to drive 200 km to go and come back, and that happens like 3 or 4 days a week.. and it's just highway.. so far he never needed AWD, he had the Camry, a Mitsu Spacewagon and then the XG30, so basically he doesn't need Audi's quattro system.. and if this really turns that bad, he could borrow my grandpa's A4 anyway. As for the badge, he doesn't care... afterall he had for 3 years the XG.. not really a prestige car. And he really doesn't like Audi to much so it's impossible to push him toward a second A4 in the family or an A6 (that would be better to fit him in)... if he is interested in that Jag it's because there was that good offer near where they live... ;)

x type all wheel drive is 60-40 rear tourque split, so its still more rear wheel than AWD, im currently watchin a test right now on tsn(motoring 2004). the review was quite good, they enjoyed the car, liked its grip and surefootedness in the snow. i think its a good idea, specially if u go with the 3.0L now i know this car isnt 'best in class' but its sure isnt the worst, and just cause another car is better , really truely doesnt make this a bad one. i think hes on the right track with the X type, considering his previously poor choices :wink:

ive driven one Jag in my life, an X type 3.0 RWD. im 188cm/ 110kg ... plenty of room for me, my father, and brother are larger, and plent of room for all of us. i think that this Jag has the most compfortable steering ive ever felt... and from my experience, on slick/unsatisfactory weather conditions, its dificult to differenciate one AWD system from another. then again, i havent driven very many AWD cars... perhaps 5

LOL I guess the X-Type was just dumped today LOL. They had a longer test drive and in their opinion the build quality is way worst than the XG30's... now his new idea is to import an Acura TL... and no, I really can't point him toward a proper German saloon LOL... it's a lost battle IMO...

hahah man the Acura TL is well away than the rest of the cars talked about here! Anyway, according to Car & Driver, the TSX is good. It is one of their 10 best cars why doesnt he get that?

Sadly he is not really into cars.. he simply works to much to have time for that.. so it's basically impossible to talk cars with him if not the models he already saw or is interested in :roll:
I'm waiting for his next step this week LOL! But usually when he begins like that, he ends up either with buying the same car he drives at the moment with simply less km on it, or something completely different from the starting point.. :D

tell him to look into mercedes! they have an amazing lineup right now!
a used S Class should cost around the same as that jag, and he would be rolling in true luxury...the S-class has been tops where luxury wheels are concerned for the past 2 decades! plus they have about 800 Million gizmos to play around with.... :wink:

btw is he really that interested in AWD? where is this car meant to be driven?

We live in Switzerland, snow is quite common ;) and yes I'm pretty sure he will try to get hold of an AWD car ;)
And Merc, as Audis, are simply not his stuff :D

Yes indeed, the new Legacy could be nice! Audis already striked, the TL is still in the works but will cost some 4000 USD to import it.. IMO he will stick with the XG30 another year :roll:

Well my dad had a X-type 2.5 and when equiped with snow tires it was very good in the snow. I was actually very surprised. Not as good as our A6 avant but what is. I live in central NY so we see plenty of snow in the winter time and it did rather well for the year that we had it.
