You're interested in buying it?

The basics are:

- rust (you never know) in exposed spots
- feel of the brake pedal
- rapid check of the elictric things
- (a classic from evo) check how the gear stick wheels and interruptors are worn out and see if it matches the km/miles stated on the counter
- hope there is good daylight to check the bodywork in case there are signs of accidents...
- pop open the hood to take a look at the "igenic" condition of the engine
- check if there is smoke coming out of the muffler
- check tires usage, to see if it's "symmetric" (if not, there could be problems, caused by accidents)

I don't know much about them, so I will just state the obvious.
Make sure all body panels line up. If they are crooked, it might have been in an accident.
Check for rust, duh!
Check for road rash on the wheels.
I don't think I need to tell you this, but drive the thing. If it has an oil pressure gauge, watch it carefully the entire time you drive it.

Optional, but do a carfax report on it if you can. Sellers aren't always honest.

Good Luck!

thx,
anything i should know about the turbos and the allwheel that i show be looking for, and a friend sed i should powershift it as fast as i can and see how the turbos ack to see if they need replacing ... doesnt sound like a should since its really hard on the transmission for allwheel drive ??

I'm not really an expert, but I'm sure it's hard to tell if the turbos are not working proprely, if you don't know well the car...

The dude's probably not going to appreciate you thrashing his car unless you agree to buy it. I've never heard how powershifting can help you judge turbo response either. Anyway, realistically you're not going to powershift all the time so why not just drive it like you're actually going to if you buy it?

all ive heard about those cars is they have a tendency to break and are expensive to fix. i dont know if thats true, i would suggest what everyone else already said. look at the way the interior is worn in and see if that is reasonable compared to the amount of miles on the odometer, etc. ask the owner some questions to see if he knows anything about cars too to see if he took good care of it. let us know what happens!!

My dad has one - They are very quick, have awesome grip and handling but due to the control gizmos are not fun to drive, i.e. rear slides are impossible etc

Tyres can be expensive - £1,000 for 4 so check they have enough tread before you buy, ECU (Engine Management) boxes are known for failing around the 60k miles mark - they cost approx £800.

Check all the electrics work – Electronic Suspension, windows, Exhaust noise controller

Im not an expert but if it was me I'd take it to a mechanic who knows the car.

the VR4 are fast cars, and beautiful. they are reliable....except for the trannys...they have a nasty habit of eating trannys so check that out!i had a friend who had a sweet VR4 TT Spyder (very vyer rare here in the US) and he had it pushing out over 500hp, but was so paraniod about the transfer case blowing he sold it cheap and bought a audi TT lol

ill dig around and get some links for companies that do trayy work on those. my friends car was soo fast....0-60 in 3.9 according to a g-tech..it was unreal and the 4 wheel steering is fun too =) i like the VR4s they are so misunderstood and underappreciated, like 300ZX, everyone forget those two cause the supras and rx-7s are more popular, and equally as awe inspiring, but man a fast late model VR-4 is a beauty of a car and the interiors are top notch with the leather too, their handly is okay, tend to push a lil and understeer, but as a street cruiser and stoplight brawler alot of people get suprised, especially from a modded one =)
www.3si.org is a good place to start, and ill dig up some links, i still haev some despite not working on one in a couple years, if ya get pics lemme know!

oh my god Anile8er if you buy that car you will be my HERO. I am getting one of those soon. A 1999 3000GT VR-4. Only 45 exist in the US. Out of those, I dunno how many of em have crashed. I love that car, I think it looks great. What year is the one you are test driving? How much does it cost?

This is the one I want. They sold the one in red so gotta go with black unfortunatelly. But it looks great in black too!
