why is it, when you see a vid of a high powered car, such as a Skyline accelerate from 0mph, there is always a large deposit of black smoke coming from the exhaust between gear changes?
If that was happening with my car, I would be straight down to the garage! Is it harmeful to the car? What is it?
Well I always tought it is simply deposit inside the exhaust that is blown off when there is an high pressure flown through it.. since it's pretty common I always considered it normal LOL.
Now time for the experts ;)

Well, generally that black smoke is from the people adjusting the mixture, i.e. making the air-fuel mixture rich (a lot of fuel). This is because when you are making 500 or 600hp you don't want to get fuel starvation, that would hurt the engine, so they error on the side of more fuel.
It is also from having very aggressive cams which overlap the exhaust and intake, causing the fresh air and fuel to mix a little with the hot exhaust gases, which apparently helps with power, and makes the black smoke you see...
So its really not anything bad, just means it is tuned a lot, and it also means they have removed the catalyitic convertors  and maybe even the mufflers for freer flowing exhaust, which equals more power.
Ok, now its time for the real experts to further comment/correct on what I said. :)

Hey, when I hit the throtle(diesel engine), there's a huge cloud of smoke comming out of it, but there's nothing wrong with it, 'cause I've already asked Mercedes.
I wonder what the difference there is with a gasoline and diesel smoke :?

I always thought that the black smoke was from carbon deposits being blown out of the engine

I think it is normal for a diesel.
Jon_s ... i thought you were a Lamborghini Mechanic ... or is that just a joke :?:
I think it is just unburnt fuel/carbon being blown out of the exhaust.... but i am not at all sure :?

Well that would be telling!
lol, no, just some rather lengthy msn conversations about what the problem could be, some advice on how to fix it, e.t.c. I would also like to add that I was not the only person to help. In fact, "sport..." (I can't remember his full name, veloice, or something) also has the same custom title for his help. The title was Jabba's way of saying thankyou, and is something that I like to have. 8)

what model mercedes do you own?
it is very common for that to happen in thrbo cars, oftern called detonation, and happens with high octane fuels
