Rarest cars you have seen on the road or track?

Which rare cars have you seen? Be it road or racecars. I do not include one-off personal specials or replicas (Although factory versions count!)
Please excuse me if almost all of the cars are older classics!. :)

I will do photos of some of them on a website I am building. Will try finish this weekend.

A quick list I can think of (Most at an annual claasic racing event in South Africa):

At Track:
Ferrari 250LM(Pretty. Want one), 330P (3 built?)
Ford F3L (Rare racer with Formula1 engine. Cooler than GT40), GT40
Jaguar C-Type, D-Type, E-Type, XK120, XK140
McLaren ??
Porsche 906, 908, 917(Awesome!!!), 956

On the road:
Aston Martin DB4, DB6, DBS
BMW M1(In front of my house one great morning!!), 333i (E30 shape only built in South Africa. 204 of them. Alpina parts.)
Ferrai 275GTB/4, 365GTB/4 (Daytona)
Jensen Interceptor
Lamborghini Miura S,SV (1 of each. 2 SV's in country. 1 wrecked in transport??), 400GT
Mclaren F1 (Only 1 in country and in to USA now.)
Porsche Carrera 2.7 RS lightweight (Only 2 in country)

Hmm. That's all I can quickly think of. I have seen many others though.
I think most of these cars had a production run of under 500

well the car isn't rare but rare in HK. i was surprised to see a holden commodore running around central. i believe its the only one as i mentioned it to someone and he said "yea some aussie imported/exported (depends which way you look at it) to hk"

One early Saturday morning, I spotted a Ferrari 250 GTO. Whether or not it was real or a replica, I couldn't tell you. It might not surprise me if it was real though, because I know there is at least one in the area where I live.

At the warehouse portion of my local Ferrari dealer I saw a Diablo GT (R?).

If you see any supercar in Vancouver, it's a pretty rare occurence.

OK... I've seen an F355 Spider, 456 GT, 550 Barchetta/Spider, i dont knwo what they;re called, a Brabus SL (not sure what model), Lambo Murcielago in green, Porshe 911 Turbo, GT3, GT2, Carrera 4S, M3, M5, Z4, X5 (all at the Naza Dealer Showroom in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia). Naza are like the local 'supercar dealer'.

What I've seen in my hometown : Audi TT, E31 8 Series, Z3, X5, lots of S-Classes, 5 E65 7 series, three E60 5 Series, and this morning..... a 993 911 Turbo, in red, blasting past me when i did the morning school run to send my brothers. Awesome. :shock:

I just saw a new Gallardo the other day and I have seen two Murcielagos as well. I have also seen numerous 911 Turbos and one GT2..I have also seen, believe it or not one yellow and one red Enzo..and I have seen an F40 on the road and I havent seen an F50 on the road but I have seen one at the dealership...and I havent seen that many Diablos on the road but I have seen a few...

Sorry I dont have any pics but I think I'm going to be able to see one of the Enzos again at the Ferrari dealership soon so I will take pics then..

I have seen a few Lambo Diablos, including a purple one owned by Prince Nassem.
I have seen a Vanquish, with its owner Rio Ferdinan (Man Utd Player) driving in the city. It was black with the Plate "RF 100" or something like that.

I have seen many other nice cars, like Porsches, but no really rare ones (like a GT2, or a 959, i have seen many GT3's ang Turbos.... The list goes on...

I have also seen the Carrera GT (in concept form at the motor show)

A Dodge Viper (rare in Britain), Hummers (mainly H2's), a New Ford Thunderbird....

I can not show a photo. 8(.
But I live in a house owned by a former BMW director of South Africa. I am looking after it for him. Its a holiday house.
One of his friends came to visit and he owned it. He gave me the keys and allowed me to sit in it, but did not take me for a drive. Unfortunately the next year I asked the House owner (Excuse me for not mentioning his name, but If you want I will PM it to you.) to take photos, but the owner had sold it. He said as much that morning. It was a LHD car in Dark Blue and he had imported it in I think 1980 (or was that 1979?).

As prrof the best I could do is maybe ask the BMW guy to send me photos of his car, although it may not be easy to get hold of him again. I think there are only 4 in South Africa, one is owned by the BMW museum and it does not run.

The closest I can come to proving the truth otherwise is to publish pictures of the other cars I mentioned and hope you believe this is true as well. The mere fact that I mention an M1 - a car few people know about - should at least give me some credibility.

I can also say that the pedal offset in the M1 is at least a match for a Countach and I had a problem getting my legs between the steering wheel and seat. The car is quite tiny inside I felt. This happened around 2000.

in milan i saw an m3 that had 400 hp and was bmw motorsport (it said that in the back), i suppose it came like that for the factory, it was really cool

i was in florence when they were about to launch the new sl, it hadnt come out n they had like 8 of em n like 10 s500 n s600 limos. they parked em altogether, that was so cool. this was in like july 2001. i try to scan the pics cause i didnt have my digital camera at that time

I only see a McLaren F1 once in my life on the highway when I was on the way back home from work. My God it's gorgeous!! I almost get into accident because I keep on looking at that car instead of the road. I guess the rarest car I've ever seen has to be the McLaren F1. I just wish I have my digital camera on me that day.

I've seen an Oldsmobile from 1904 on the road along with an Aston Martin DB4-5 not sure, and a Porsche GT2. I've seen a Lamborghini Gallardo at a Wendy's, and a Ferrari Testorossa. My dad's boss has an Acura NSX, and a Lotus Caterham 7. I wish I've seen more exotics though. :roll:

You are right, it has digressed a bit. All the cars I mentioned when starting this post really was at a a track with some racing event - I include Ferrari day which is where I have seen the F50's - or on the road driving or parked. Although I have to say if I include showrooms I can not necessarily include many more rarities - maybe a Hummer, Prowler some more Lamborghinis and even a Shelby 350 Mustang (a former Hertz rent car).

Furthermore I only listed the ones I remembered quickly when typing the post. I have seen LOADS of rare cars of all types, which is why I mentioned the low production figures. It is easy enough to include cars with a run of less than, say, 25 000, which is low by today's standards. That would include a lot of cars built before the 70's!!

But on the other hand - it is still interesting to see who has seen which cars.

I do not like 'modded' mass-production cars at all.
To me M3's do not count. Although an original pre-evolution 80's E30 M3 may count. (I have seen one of those too)

By the way - the rarest car I have seen that I can tremember must be the Ferrari 330P(Owned by David Piper). As far as I know only 3 exist. Anyone know if I am wrong? I know there are quite a few unique cars, I just have not seen any myself - yet. 8)

It's a bit difficult to read but the odo reading on april 3rd 2004 was 54,916 km.
The owner does use his 480 cabrio on the road. The 3rd of April was a special occasion as he presented his pride and joy to a bunch of fellow cheese wedge enthousiasts, from France - Belgium - the Netherlands, in a showroom.

Don't get me wrong. I have never seen such a volvo. I do not know if they exist in this country and it is certainly rare enough according to the other posts here.

We are just pointing out the title of this post which kind of precludes showrooms, as I know there are people that have seen just about all the rare things at motor shows and salesrooms, which requires little effort. Spotting one on the road is different.

Say like the difference in spotting a rare bird in the wild and going to the Zoo to see it. 8). Its just more special and rare seeing one out there doing what it should do - being driven.

The 480 was only sold in Europe. So assuming you live in the country of Nelson Mandela I'm certain that Volvo has never exported her 480 to your country. Obviously there is a minute change that a Dutchy or Brit was so fond of his Cheese Wedge that he imported his/her pride privately. Although I know that someone in Japan does own and drive a 480, so you'll never know :wink:

AT the moment I am living in a very posh part of Barcelona. I see 996 turbo's and gt2's almost every day. Yesterday I saw two mercedes AMG's and two turbo's. One of my rarest sightings would have to be a Countach convertible I saw in sydney. I also saw an Enzo in a dealership.

Today I saw a Vanquish. I also remembered that I have seen a porsche 959, Diablos, a 1914 Roll Royce some Bentleys. But the rarest is definately the 959 only 259 were built.
