As short as possible... our old Olympus C-3000 ZOOM (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Olympus/oly_c3000z.asp) Is sadly outdated.. I still remember, when we bought it years ago, there was nothing above the 3.3 MP... now 3.3 is basically the standard for cameras 2 inches big ;)

So it's really time for a new one... for weeks I dreamt about the Canon EOS 300D (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos300d/)... a damn good camera for sure.. but lately I began to realize it might be to much for me... it has features I don't really need. I love to take pics, but a shutter speed of 1/4000 sec is not mandatory considering that I'm happy enough with the 1/800 I use now LOL. And it's also pretty big even with the base lense...

And lately in the shops I see the Canon Powershot Pro1 (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/canon_pro1.asp) .. smaller, 8 MP against 6.3!! Of course you can't change lenses on it as you can on the EOS... but well, I never had the need for that..
BTW for this camera, if I need to take macro pics, will I need a macro lens to add to it? I think so... but I hope not this one: http://www.dpreview.com/articles/CanonPro1/Images/Supplied/Pro1_12.jpg

But really I don't know :( every time I read about good cameras for a good price, the EOS 300D comes up, while the Powershot is less talked about..

I'm sure it's a good camera, let's say at 80% I will buy it, but I'd like to have a couple of opinions, maybe before tomorrow since I doubt I will be able to resist more LOL.

BTW cho, if you read that, don't worry, I remember our discussions, but of course the more opinions, the better :D

i had the 300D with me in Geneve this year, and i really liked it a lot, very easy to handle and takes very very good pics...
right now i´m using nikon coolpix 5000 but definitely want to change to D70 which is a bit better than 300D and nikon is well known for their masterpieces...
i´d definitely go for a digital SLR cam, they´re IMO way better than the normal digi cams....

Well I know st-anger, but I'm trying not to spend to much and those two are already the max I can afford :D and really I don't need more than that to take pics of cars around my town LOL

i dunno much about the 300D, but i can attest to canon's build quality. they feel really nice and solid as opposed to wome other brands.

I bought lot of stuff on ebay and online in general, but for things that delicate, I prefer to go to a "real" shop and pay with hard cash ;) and have it right away w/o having to wait a week or more ;)

BTW, the Powershot is considered as a "SLR-like"... because it match SLR camera w/o really beeing one.. but it's to technical for me to understand LOL

So, well.. one is an SLR, the other an SLR-like... I don't know what I was saying in the previous post ;)

I dont know much about cameras , but getting a Nikon or a Leica in digi format would be the best choice IMO , my dad is a Camera phreak and he uses Nikon and Rolleiflex but in the standard NOT digi model , so as far as ive heard those are good choices

Yes as I posted in my first post ;) you can click the names of the cameras, and guess where you will end up? ;) dpreview ;)

I was asking here hoping to find some digital camera nut that could give me personal advices ;)

Sorry TT - I am just a "point and clicker" - and as such found the Kodak DX6490 to suite me fine for now.

I wish I could afford it as it is a VERY good camera.

The only "problem" with the 300D are the lenses... when you have such a camera you start buying a second one.. than a third.. and it will become to expensive and a mess when you have to carry it around...

Interesting post TT :)
I’ve already spoken to you MSN but I’ll mention some stuff here

The Canon Pro1 is a very good all round camera. It has movie modes, a very useful flip out LCD screen, comes with an above average zoom lens and has a high mega pixel CCD sensor.
However, something you should be aware of - because it has so many pixels packed into a very small CCD sensor the images do contain above average 'noise' and therefore anything above ISO 200 is really unusable.

SLR cameras do have much better image quality compared to CCD 'Point and Shoot' cameras but you won't get movie modes, you can’t use the LCD to preview the image before you take the shot and the learning curve will be very high.

I’m not sure what you will be using the camera for but I have a feeling that an SLR isn’t for you. Cost issue aside there is a lot more involved with SLR cameras than just clicking the shutter to take photos.

Go for the Pro1, it’s a great camera and will meet all of your needs....... but if you do decided to go the SLR route don’t get the 300D. I've never been a fan of Nikon gear but anyone who chooses a 300D over the D70 is a fool :)

I hope that helps :)

P.S - I'm sure you will anyway but let us know what you buy

Thanks for this post SDK, very usefull indeed! :D

For instance, I was not aware about the LCD preview in SLR cameras!!! Movies of course are rarely used but nice to have them.. and in the past I rarely used ISO 200 or 400 so the noise above 200 won't be a problem and probably the better result will be better than my C-3000 ;) and BTW, I don't shoot pics for magazines usually ;) (well ok, my girlfriend yes, sometimes needs high-res pics to publish in magazines, but not so often ;)) so I'm sure the quality would be fine :D

And as I told you via MSN, indeed, an SLR would be really to much.. because I'm sure I will start buying more and more lenses :D it's not really a money problem (well, maybe someway yes ;)), but I don't want to go around packed with lenses and stuff :D

I'm more a point-and-shoot person as you understood :D so I fear tomorrow I will have a new Pro 1 here with me LOL

Yeah - You take photos by looking through the view finder and you can only review the image once you have taken it.

TT

Yep I see and I am often forced to take pics with the camera above my head and so on.. so a working LCD is usefull :D

SDK2003

Some info :)

An SLR camera has a mirror sitting behind the lens just in front of the sensor that reflects the image from the lens through a Pentaprism to the view finder, so, what you see in the viewfinder is what you get. (If light was also split to the LCD then the image in the viewfinder and LCD would be 50% bright on each display)

As you press the shutter release button the mirror flips up out of the way, at the same time the shutter mechanism opens to whatever you set the shutter speed to – 1/4000sec to 3mins+ on the 10D. Whilst the shutter is open the view finder 'blacks out' because the mirror is flipped up out the way so not light is entering the viewfinder. Once the photo is taken it’s displayed on the LCD.

Cant help you by suggesting names of cameras, I currently own a Minolta Dimage Xt and would love to own a Canon DSC-T1. As you can see, for me, size is a factor. If they are small, they surely are point and shoot cameras (dont like multi-functioned cameras either). I like small cameras and small cell phones. Especially if you just want em to take pics around town. I just use my Minolta 3.2 and use Jasc Paind Shop Pro 8 to fix up the images. With that combination, you cant go wrong (exept if the picture is really noisy, which only happens at night).

Anyway, try out this site.... http://www.steves-digicams.com/ its great for digital cameras reviews n stuff. They even have some preview images. That guy tests out the cameras and gives sample pics. So there, you can see the difference between a picture with one camera and picture with another.

cho_888
04-05-2004, 08:01 PM
yes, i was going to explain this.
the last photo you could easy take with a pro 1. the other you would have to in the water, or be some sort of superhuman that could stand right next to birds. With the 300D you can put a lens just like the one on the pro1. And have the same camera plus more and if sometime down the track you wanted to change the style of photography you could just change lens.

Basically the pro one is good for what you want now, but the 300D takes into account what you may want out of your future camera.

TT
04-05-2004, 08:05 PM
Yes, the main "pro" to the EOS is also the main "problem"... I don't want to deal with bigger and bigger lenses ;)

cho how much is the 10D here in oz?

TT, do you think 256mb is enough? hehe

TT
04-06-2004, 10:00 AM
LOL it depends... but well I just have to avoid using the biggest res possible ;) and 256 could be quite a lot :D

bmwfreak
04-06-2004, 10:05 AM
256 should be enough, unless you;re a complete camera freak, in which case you'll shoot everything in 2048 X 1600 and edit it later. by my reckoning, all you need really is 1024 X 768, and that should give you about 300 to 400++ shots on one memroy card alone. (=

TT
04-06-2004, 01:16 PM
LOL with my old C-3000 I always hot only at 2048... (beside when in Geneva ;)).. now of course I shoot everything at 3200 ;) but yes, when you need more pics there is no problem in reducing the size or quality ;)

RC45
04-06-2004, 02:00 PM
Guys - at least 1 x 256mb stick is a BARE minimum. When I go out, I will fill 3 x 128mb sticks in an afternoon.

It is digital data afater all - just delet thepics you don't want.. ;) you are not "saving" anything by shooting in a lower resolution. :D

I love always having an empty memory stick just incase.

Memory sticks are dirt cheap in the US - so y'all must be able to get them cheap online.

SDK2003

Depends on your budget and what mode you shoot photos

I have 2 x 512meg CF cards and mostly shoot in RAW format, that just about gives me enough for 200 photos or 400 photos @ maximum JPEG quality

cho_888
04-06-2004, 05:50 PM
our family is a camera freak one. We shoot in RAW which means massive files. and We have 2- 1gig micro drives. 1- 1gig flashcard and 1- 2gig flash card.
we filled them all at the grand prix!

:? no need for 10MB.. 1-2 is just fine... and i am talking car pics.. i have a lot.. i would like to have more :D
and here from some reason 1024X768 is just about the biggest... i would love to see some of the car pics you people take in 1600x1200 or bigger...
but maybe its just me...

TT
04-06-2004, 07:11 PM
LOL 1600 is still enough :D of course I have stored lot of 3000 pixels ones too, but the problem is that basically the net is not really for such big pics.. they are meant for printing, so usually if you publish them, better to reduce to make things faster and easy to look at ;)

TT

The prospect of maybe printing some of my images is why I always keep the highest res versions. DVD's are cheap.

Of course you reduce the res for web use - but why should I miss out on high quality prints because of "other" web viewers. ;)

A decade ago I was into SLR photography, and always lost "that perfect" pic, because I didn't take 2 or 3 when I had the chance - now that we have digital home production ability I figured screw that.. LOL never again will I miss the "shot" :P

Perfectly agree. And that's why I shot always at max res and quality usually.

And since in the past some editors already told us (for the dolls obviously..) that our pics are barely enough to be published, well, now I hope they won't argue anymore :P
