I've driven Prototypes for a variety of different kinds of Ford vehicles...
Focus GT which is coming out with the Focus freshening and carries a 2.3L inline 4 with something approaching 200lb-ft of torque with 151 bhp
Focus FR200, 304 bhp turbocharged, front-drive monster that's faster than a Corvette Z06 around a racetrack
Porsche 993 Carrera 2
Windstar (oh yeah, that was fun)
Ranger (ditto)
Explorer (double ditto)
Expedition (triple ditto)
Escape, i.e. Maverick in Britain
Ford Cougar V6 manual, and 4cyl
Mazda Miata LS 6speed
Mazdaspeed Protege
Mazda 6 V6 manual and auto.
Probe GT (COTY version)
Aston Martin Vanquish (preproduction prototypes)
Lincoln Navigator V10 with variable displacement
Ford Mustang GT supercharged
Merkur XR4Ti
and I managed to break one prototype's prototype transmission (it was a piece of crap and happened on all of the other prototypes with that tranny)

how was the mazda 6 v6?
Vansquish
10-10-2003, 02:31 AM
The answer to that question is...I own one.
Vansquish
10-10-2003, 02:42 AM
....and the more in-depth answer to the question is that my dad was the chief-program engineer (i.e. the manager of the 6 program for the US...before Mazda took over and redid the entire program and built a different car, but used much of the structure and specs that my dad put into the program...one of those specs is that it had to be as stiff as a BMW 5 series)
It has a double-cone clutch, which increases the contact patch of the clutch plates, to promote better engagements, though it takes a bit of time to get used to...but has one of the finest gearboxes I've driven. With the optional sport package that we have equipped to our Dark Blue Metallic vehicle, the 17" wheels and tires and suspension...well....we have these "cloverleaf" entrance/exit ramps from highways here in the US...on one of those with a posted 25mph speed limit, I easily maintained 70mph. I've also seen upwards of 130mph in breaks in traffic on the highway past 3 in the morning (luckily there weren't any deer hehehehe).
Aside from being an excellent country/B-road racer, it's also a very comfortable tourer. I covered the 300-odd miles from Detroit to Chicago at roughly 85-90mph steady cruise with exellent sound quality from the Bose stereo...it was a little bit too...easy tog o that fast...we brought my dad's Radar Detector for a little extra protection from the coppers hehee.
Anyway, in short, it's a really excellent vehicle for the kind of money you'd pay for one. I'd wager it's better than the Mondeo ST220 too, but having not really driven one, I couldn't tell you from personal experience.
I also went to the Mazda Rev-It Up Challenge autocrossed a few lightly modded 6's...they were excellent...predictable and really a bundle of fun on the course.

I would suggest the mazda 6 as well. The daily driver is a mazda 6 v6 with the auto(I live in a downtown metro area). The car is pretty nice. My only complaints are minor: There is a few rattle noises here and there, The brake pads dust way more then they should (outlawing of asbestos of course), and a few people(not including myself) have experienced minor rusting in the door hinge area.
Beyond that, the car requires very little maintenance and has an excellent warrenty. It handles ok for a 4 door in the 20k price range and has braking that seems to be best in class. It certainly isn't going to win a quarter mile or road race, but thats what project cars are for.

The V6 Auto is a slug by comparison with the manual version. The Auto can't break 8 seconds in the 0-60mph sprint, but the stick will do around 6.6seconds...it's not a supercar, but it is suitably brisk, and I've seen upwards of 120mph on relatively short stretches of open road.

eh both are slugs in the quarter compared to a true sports car (I've driven both the stick and the auto. I bought it over a wrx or a 2002 camaro due to insurance and lower gas costs. My current project car has the quarter and road racing handled when it is actually running.). The car is not a quarter car, its just a decent handler with excellent amenities for it's price.
*on edit: I guess brisk is a relative thing. Even with the manual the car would be the slowest in a straight line of any I have owned. It would out handle most of them though.
Oh and to answer cars that I've driven or ridden in: I have a horrible memory (and won't even begin to list your run of the mill cars I test drove before choosing the 6 or my previous cars) but most recently (last 4 months):
2002 Camaro ZL1 Phase III
2002 Camaro ZL1 Prototype
2001 BMW M5
2000 Saleen Mustang 351
Chevy SSR
Gustaf996Turbo

Here is my list of some of the performance cars that I have been lucky enough to drive despite my relatively young age:
Mazda MX 5 1,8
MGF VVC
Toyota MR2
Mercedes E420
Saab 9-5 aero

Porsche 944 S2
Porsche Boxster S
Porsche 993 Carrera 4S
Porsche 993 Turbo
Porsche 996 Turbo
Ferrari 360 Modena F1
Formula Renault
I'm a lucky bastard I know. My dream is to drive a sports prototype from the sixties or early seventies. Preferably an Italian one!

I have a friend in my city who have a BMW Saloon, so I drove all of the cars they have.. The BMW 760i was the best all of the cars I've ever driven.. What can I say.. It was MAGNIFICENT. The first gear in this car is so short, that i thought i will be in the Mars in a second. But the sixth gear is so long, that the rpm is somewhere between 2000 and 2500 at 180 kmph! I'm really enjoyed the ride, and i'm happy that I had no accident whith this car.. :D

at least we're the ones posting.
I think that's about it.
I spend most of my time on Racing Flix, but since there is not much going on there anymore...
Anyway, if all things go my way, I'll maybe start working for
Avto+Å*port. The situation will be cleared up in about a week.

Apac102, won't your familiy buy an Audi A8 or a lexus in the near future?
I bet alot of people are going to envy you, for being able to drive
an A8 for instance...
Besides, you're only 19... when I was 19 the only thing I tested was ma lawn moer
and my golf.
HaHa so I'm a bit ahead of you but not much!

You can test drive a 760i with someone from the showroom sitting with you....(at least its like this in Hungary as far as I know.... )

Here is a small update and a request.
Nissan 350Z - Awsome, everbody should try it
Mazda - RX8
Audi A6 3.2 FSI
My new ride - Honda Legend Coupe
Opel Astra
Volkswagen Touran
Audi A3
Ford Probe 2
And now I got a problem.
I was offered the Aston Martin DB9, but only via phone. So how do I convince the retailer that a 26 year old guy can afford a 160.000 Euro car?
Any hints and Tips?
