I have spent a small fortune changing amongst others the driveshafts, center bearing,subframe/axle bushes, trailing arm bushes, transmission mount, differential mount etc since I bought my car last yr.

My car did become quieter but it only seemed to amplify the main annoying sound.....a thumping sound just before the car comes to a stop.

I have a 4 speed automatic.

Today I experimented when I drove on gear 3 and not D and guess what..........no more thump sound.

My question is what is wrong with my auto transmission/differential?

Whats wrong with gear 4/D?

Does my auto transmission/differential need an overhaul?

Could I have your feedback pls.....I dont think I can afford to drive on gear 3 all the while just to avoid the occasional thump.

Thanks guys!

Sounds like your transmission is on the way out. That's likely the sound of play inbetween the gears. Since the sounds stopped when you went into another gear, it's not the differential, but the transmission. I'd guess an overhaul is in order when it gets to the point where you can't stand it anymore. Another option/cheaper option would be to source a low mileage used transmission from a salvage yard. Make sure there's some type of warranty though.

Good luck.

Thanks StanAE86.

I guess I need to visit a transmission specilist in Msia.

Does anyone know of any website dicussing such problems?
