The new BMW 1 Series

First pictures of BMW’s new premium sports hatch

BMW is poised to shake up the compact executive segment with the arrival of the new 1 Series. Featuring four engines, three gearboxes and rear-wheel drive, a combination not found in any of its competitors, the BMW 1 Series makes its entrance in autumn 2004 and will immediately offer a new benchmark to driving dynamics in its class.

A 1.6-litre petrol engine producing 150Nm of torque at 4,300rpm powers the entry-level BMW 116i. The 115bhp unit achieves a zero to 62mph time of 10.8 seconds and a top speed of 125mph. Even with this high level of performance, the 116i achieves an economical fuel consumption of 37.7mpg.

The high-performance four-cylinder petrol model is the BMW 120i with its 150bhp and 200Nm (at 3,600rpm) 2.0-litre VALVETRONIC petrol engine. Light and nimble, the 120i covers zero to 62mph in 8.7 seconds before going on to achieve a maximum speed of 135mph.

The BMW 1 Series launch line-up is completed with two versions of the powerful yet frugal 2.0-litre common rail diesel engine. The 122bhp BMW 118d averages 50.4mpg while posting a zero to 62mph time of 10 seconds and reaching a top speed of 125mph. The higher-performance 163bhp BMW 120d achieves 49.6mpg yet is capable of a 7.9 second zero to 62mph time and a 137mph top speed. Instant turbo power delivered smoothly to the red line results in the 120d posting sharper performance figures than its 2.0-litre petrol equivalent.

In-gear overtaking in both diesel models should prove rapid thanks to a maximum torque of 280Nm and 340 Nm respectively, much of this urge available from a low 2,000rpm. Both diesel-engined derivatives and the two petrol units are EU4 emission compliant.

Power is delivered to the road via a six-speed manual in 118d, 120d and 120i models, while the 116i has a five-speed manual gearbox. An optional six-speed automatic will also be offered on 120i and 120d models.

Although a new car in a new premium segment, the 1 Series has the traditional BMW design trademarks – the front kidney grille, double headlamps and ‘Hofmeister kink’ on the C-pillar all feature. These punctuate a genuinely head-turning styling that ensures the new 1 Series will stand out amongst its competitors.

After slipping behind the wheel and firing up the engine via a starter button, the driver will go on to enjoy BMW’s renowned 50:50 weight distribution and front engine, rear wheel drive set-up – unique in this class. Coupled with a technically elaborate aluminium front axle and five-link rear suspension, this ensures optimum handling and traction, and the most invigorating drive in the compact executive segment. A drag coefficient of just 0.29 helps the new BMW 1 Series slip through the air with maximum efficiency and the minimum of noise. Standard fit 16-inch run-flat tyres also mean the days of motorway hard shoulder tyre changes are over.

Measuring just 4.23 metres long, but with a relatively long wheelbase of 2.66 metres, driving dynamics have been cleverly worked into a practical four-seater. The new 1 Series offers ample shoulder and legroom for rear passengers and, thanks to split fold rear seats that fold virtually flat, a similarly generous luggage capacity of between 330 to 1150 litres of storage space.

Dynamic Stability Control, Dynamic Traction Control, Dynamic Brake Control and Electronic Differential Lock help ensure the 1 Series provides the highest standards of active safety without impacting unnecessarily on driving enjoyment. An airbag system that includes head airbags for all occupants means the new BMW 1 Series also meets the most stringent passive safety requirements.

The high level of standard safety features combined with structural integrity means that the new 1 Series is clearly aiming for five stars in the Euro NCAP crash test.

Meanwhile, optional extras include Bluetooth capability, sports seats with backrest width adjustment, acoustic Park Distance Control at the front and the rear and Bi-xenon headlights. The pioneering iDrive controller when mated to a navigation system is also an option. Keyless access and voice-activated radio and navigation systems will appear after launch.

Prices for the all-new 1-Series will be announced later in the spring.

very light and nimble and im sure with alot of after market potentiol if it is cheap,

the M2 sounda very promising short wheelbase, small weight, high power..!!

If u ever see a car crash involving a Mazda 3 and a Z4, it will look like the 1 series

The interior looks nice tho, but that steering...(well I hated that steering since Z4 and X3....or the 5 series.....)..

I personally am not a fan of the new idea that BMW is headed towards. I pride myself on being one of the biggest BMW fans out there. Don't get me wrong, I like the looks of all of the new series of cars that they are looking to produce. However, I am worried that BMW will lose some of its appeal to the people that BMW used to target only at by putting out all of these new models. Imagine a BMW 1,2,3,4,5,6,7-Series. How silly does that honestly sound? I think BMW should step away from the marketing strategy of selling to everyone. I like the fact that I own a BMW. I feel honored and lucky driving it every day. But I know that enjoyment will be hindered some if the amount of BMWs double or even triples. I like feeling like I'm part of an exclusive club of people that own a BMW.

Also if they make an M2...that could pull some of the luster from the renown M-Series automobiles. So I say that BMW should steer away from the marketing to everyone strategy and look at what the people who own BMWs already are looking for. Plus I feel that the 3_series is doing an awesome job covering the entry-level BMW niche. By the time you get a Honda Accord with most of the options you are just a few thousand dollars away from a 325i. Most people just don't realize that. I think that BMW could invest more time in marketing that to potential owners instead of trying to make an entirely new car just for that person.

Also if BMW is making 8-10 different automobiles one would worry that the craftsmanship of a BMW could suffer also. People have already complained that the new X3 just doesn't quite feel entirely like a BMW. I would have to agree after test driving one.

There is a reason why BMW is going to make the 1 and 2 Series. The same reason that Audi made the A2 and A3, as well as why Mercedes make the A Class, as well as buses and trucks : Economics.

BMW is one of the few independent car manufacturers left. A few others are Porsche, and MG Rover. To stay independent, they need money to resist corporate takeovers. Toyota, in actual fact, could buy BMW tomorrow, if they wanted to, because they are stinking rich. The idea that 'more vehicles on the road = less exclusivity' is true, to an extent.

Premium manufacturers such as BMW, Audi and Mercedes need the money from these sales , as ever, to survive. The argument that doing such cars as the ONe, the A2 and the A Class will devalue the ownership experience of such marques does not really hold water. Why? For the simple fact that a badge is a badge, and its desirability is nigh-on impossible to devalue.

Do you think S-Class owners give a hoot that Mercedes actually manufactures BUSES and TRUCKS? 5 tonne trucks and buses with three pointed stars on them! Yet SL55 AMGs and A Class' still sell. BMW needs these sales to sustain profitability and independence, as well as wanting to reach their target of selling 1.2 millions vehicles a year.

The 1 does it for me, good looks, i'm sure the handling will be great, and the engines will get the blood going. I'm suprised that people are pointing out the Mazda3 issue. BMW have been slagged for making cars that look like nothing else over the past two years. The 'stupid 7', the 'flabby 5' and the 'sloppy 6'. Only the Z4, which occupies a market niche that prides its products on being different, has received wide, if faint, praise. And one that has a slight semblance of normality to it (a Mazda3 is as normal as they come), is critcised as well?

Should I have the opportunity to buy the One, i would. My family's going to need a new car soon, since we all drive, and this fits the bill. ANd when was the last time anyone has wanted/lusted after something the size of a hatchback?

Chris Bangle did the Fiat Coupe, and that looked pretty good. You cant really blame the board, because they judged him on his previous work.

BUt I doubt Claus Luthe would;ve have come up with anything more interesting. As it is, I would LOVE to see Ian McCallum working for BMW.

He did the DB7, mind you.

To my knowledge the BMW 3-Series was made to satisfy the entry level market. BMW has never been a company that prided itself on just being able to sell a lot of cars....that's Ford's job. They have been a company that works to build and establish a relationship with each customer. So what would be the point of pricing a BMW so low that they will sell only one car...and not gain a valuable customer that will be with them through several BMWs. Modern marketing is and has been growing towards relationship marketing. That is a fact.

Sadly in the car market if you don't sell, you die.. every carmaker NEED to sell cars and lately to sell cars you need to have them in every single cathegory :(

They need the money to survive. If by making the One, and in the end get more cash, then I'm sure it will contribute towards BMW finally taking the decision to make a supercar, something to beat the crap out of the SLR, Audi's forthcoming supercar and, heaven forbid, the Porsche Carerra GT?

A Spiritual successor to the M1, and in a small way, the Macca F1, made possible by making the One series. Hehe. Sounds interesting. And the 2 series, and the 4 series...
