So I feel your pain :(

DAMN you as well.....I share in your misery as I have had my own recent loss of £1,250 in cash that was dropped by a careless builder that I had given my money too for materials...and sadly of course he hasnt got it to give back to me (full story in the other thread)

All I can say is that life is extremely cruel sometimes but it is all part of life none the less...and I am totally GUTTED for you as well as myself right now....

Look up the word GUTTED coombsie and there would be our pictures along side the explanation of the word right now I should think...

Yes I am truly GUTTED for you really I am...I know how much this hurts...and how it totally fucks your mind up....and how depressed it can make you feel as well....yes its absolutley terrible and another real horror story for sure :|

I know how you feel. I have had my car stolen. I walked out the cafe with my GF and there it was. A soon as I saw it, it started moving. Tinted windows did not help at that time. It just moved and I couldnt believe it. I ran after my car and totally forgot about my GF. Ever since that day, I cannot stay longer than 30 mins somewhere without looking if it is still there. I hate these assholes too. Makes me want to start stealing sometimes.

No matter how much security features you have, If they want to steal something,
they will. You just have to be lucky...
Once my fathers friend '99 S600 was stolen and he even had all different security systems(3 types of alarms,etc...), damn the poor guy was devastated, he even cried and become ill for a couple of months. The police told him these where pro's
and probably stole his car by using a 'laptop'. He tried to find it back but no luck...

The best thing to do is to forget it and move on, I guess

Yeah...my friends mom had a pretty bad situation. It was her 'nameday' (In Poland people above 20 celebrate their nameday, not their birthday) and she parked the car outside a shop, got out of the car to collect a cake. When she returned the car was no longer there. Nobody saw anything, no traces were left. Although it was 'only' a Fiat Seicento it still was the worst nameday anybody could ask for.

There should be a more severe law on thiefs, I mean they steal something,
don't have the money to pay, have a short vacation in prison, are out and
stealing again. Bring back those hand cutting stuff...

For Jon_s:
It was a GT LTS-5000, i put judy 100's on it, XTR front and XT rear v-brakes, DMR V8 pedals, a shorty billet stem, azonic riser bars, specialised grips, mavic D521 rims, LX hubs, wiv tioga 2.1 DH tyres, an azonic (i think) chain guide, just spent 120 quid the other week on sum middleburn cranks, an azonic sofa saddle.

It is really hard to keep a vehicle and even if you do you won't be able to ride it around.

I know how you feel. I had a few bikes stolen also. I ride a lot. I like to go to some mountaion bike trails and stuff. So once my parents bought me a bike some 3years ago, and I really liked it. It cost 400$ or something like that. It wasnt all that great, but I really liked it plus it was a gift from my parents. And guess what one day I come out of the house, go in my backyard and it was gone. Felt like you man. Then one more time some fucking thug stole my bike while I was playing basketball with my friends. I was in a big fenced cort at a local ghetto shcool. The the bike was close to the only exit that was in the gated court. I was on the opposite side, and saw this fuck come in and simply take it. Now I can run fast, but I could not catch him. I came to that school like 4days in a row, trying to find that fuck, but he wasnt from that school.....

I dont think i'll ever get it back tho, i shud get insurance tho, which im hopin will be around 900 quid, wat would you say is the best bike on the market at that kinda price at the moment??
I aint fussed if its hard tail or full sus.

jon_s
03-09-2004, 06:23 PM
Personally I would go down the hardtail route as for that money, you get more for your money.

Also, it is better for commuting!

I will have a fiddle and see what I can build up for 900 smackers

TT
03-09-2004, 06:25 PM
What about a nice Cannondale? With 900 GBP you should be able to get one :D

But well, I bought my last bike so many years ago... I always was in love with Cannondale and I'm not even sure it still exists LOL!

coombsie66
03-09-2004, 06:27 PM
If it is a hard tail it needs to have a pretty decent chainset and wheels as standard, as i ride quite hard (when not commuting) and am a fairly hefty chap. I snapped my standard ones on my GT pedaling off of traficlights!!!!!!

jon_s
03-09-2004, 06:31 PM
lol, I will bear that in mind!

I was trying to build up a Santa Cruz CHAMELEON, but it is proving difficult. £365 for the frame, by the time decent forks/groupset are added, cost over 1k

There is an Orange:

The worst thing is even if scum like that get caught, they get off so easily. Yet if it's you speeding a little on an open stretch of road in the middle of nowhere, you get smacked down hard

A firend had a breakin in his car right outside his bedroom window. Unfortiunately for the thief, hes not the gentlest of people - he took a good long runup and kicked the door shut over hus legs. Broke both thighbones in his right leg!

Turns out it was the 17yr old vietnameze kid living litterelly next door. He still walks with a limp and i still smile every time I see him. Now if there was any justice in the world, you'd get a medal for something like that.

Orange Components: http://www.bromleybike.com/ishop/399/shopscr1694.html

Frameset Series 14 Custom Butted 6061 T6 Aluminium

Chainset Race Face Evolve XC
Front Mech Shimano LX
Rear Mech Shimano XT
Shifters Shimano LX
Cassette Shimano 9 speed
Hubs Shimano M475 Disc
Spokes Stainless DB
Rims WTB Dual Duty XC
Tyres WTB Weirwolf 2.1
Brakes Shimano Deore Disc

Pedals Flat
Handlebars Supercross

Stem 4 Bolt 3D Forged
Seatpost Stick Up
Saddle WTB Rocket V
Other features Disc mounts, Crud Catcher mounts, Pannier Eylets, 2 x bottle fixing points

Marin Components: http://www.bromleybike.com/ishop/399/shopscr223.html

Frame - 7005 Ali A-XC with double butted Edge top and down tubes, butted Tri-burner stays, custom CNC bridges abd drop outs. ISO disc tabs
Forks - Rock Shox Duke CX U-turn 63-108mm adjustable travel
Brakes - Magura Julie hydraulic disc brakes
Brake Levers - Magura Julie
Rear Derailleur - Shimano XT
Front Derailleur - Shimano Deore
Shifters - Shimano Deore Rapidfire
Crankset - Truvativ Firex 22/32/44
Hubs - Comp disc 32 Hole Qr Front/Rear
Rims - Mavic X223 disc
Tyres - WTB Motoraptor 26 x 2.24
Saddle - WTB speed v with love channel

Pro and Cons of each:
Orange:
-Price spot on 950
-Decent frame
-XC wheels, mot as strong as the Mavic ones.
-Not ridden the Manitou Axel Super Disc 100, probably not quite Duke standards.
-Decent group set, mix of XT/LX and Race Face.

Marin:
-Price, is £50 more than insurance payout.
-Groupset, not quite as good as the Orange
-Decent wheels
-Brakes, have had reliability questions in the past, but they may have been sorted.
-frame is stronger than the Orange, more 'hardcore' stance
-Nice forks

Overall, I would get the Marin. Resons: Better frame and fork. The rims are pretty strong, Mavic in gerneral make the best stuff out there. The brakes are fine for every days stuff, even steep Freeride stuff. If you are worried about the rims, you could ask the bike to be supplied with Mavic F519's or the D521's.

It might be hard to get the pricve down on the Marin. For my 10% discount to apply, the money has to come out of my account :? . You never know though, if you say that you have £950 and that is it, they may just bend

Sorry about what happened, coombsie. I can imagine how you feel. A while ago my bike was stolen as well and I felt bad even when it was just an old and crappy one which was worth next to nothing. So multiply that by three and I know how you feel.

Sachmo12345, if I had to kneecap every thief I saw, I'd have to shoot at least one person a day. I get offered stolen bikes pretty much every day by junkies. Lots of people buy them, but I reckon that's like making sure your own bike will get stolen in the future. People just don't feel like paying a lot of money for a bike that will get stolen anyway, so they fence a cheap one. I don't get how those people can get mad when 'their' bike gets stolen.

jon_s
03-11-2004, 12:00 PM
Right, I have had a chat with the lads at my shop. The Orange is the bike for you! Reasons are that the Marin brakes/foldes/snaps, and they are arsey on the warrenty! We also have the Orange in stock, £949. The wheels are decent enough, althoug still 'XC', they should last you a good couple of years. :D

Apparently i have to get a quote form a bike shop as to how much my existing bike was worth. (to proove it was a grand).
How do you think i should go about doing this? Im making up a list of all the components i put on it, and how much i remember paying for them new, but isnt a bike shop goin to just mark it all down to second hand price and give me a shite price!?
Unless i can pull it so that, if they give me a good quote then i will buying a more expensive bike, so its in their best interests to give me a quote!??

jon_s
03-12-2004, 08:05 AM
lol, sorry, but that is not a question I hear a lot living in London!

The reasons why:

1)There is a congestion charge to go into the center of London, £5 per day
2)London is still far too congested! So to get from A-B takes a stupid amount of time
3)When you get to 'B', there is no place to park. I am going to use an extreme example, but there is one NCP car park just off Covent Garden charging £8 for ever hour!
4)In some parts of London, you would be lucky to have a car in the morning!

A car is not pratical if you are commuting into central London.

coombsie66
03-12-2004, 06:00 PM
My stolen bike:

GT LTS-5000, bought for £550 4 years ago.
What i changed:
Forks, changed to Judy 100's, bought for around £250 i think.
Handle bars: Azonic rizers, £35
Stem: Short billet (forgotten name) £30
Pedals: DMR V8's £25
Cranks: Middleburns (brand fuckin new!!!! Arse!) £125
Chain guide: Blackspire DS-1 £90
Rear Mech: XT, £50
Wheels: Mavic D521's with stainless spokes, LX hubs. £120
Tyres: Tioga 2.1 DH's, around £20 i think.
Brakes: XTR front XT rear V-Brakes, £60 and £30
Azonic Sofa Saddle: £50

Grand total of: £1,435!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FUCK ME I WASTED A SHIT LOAD OF MONEY!
Man writing this list has made me realise how fuckin overpriced mountainbike stuff is!!!!! Thats extortionate!!!

Ok even minus 50% for second hand would still make it £700 so surely a bike shop could quote it as worth a grand!?

Nemisis8u
03-12-2004, 07:02 PM

jon_s

Ok, the word is, you will be glad to hear.........the shop value at RRP, so they should value at the 1.4k mark.

Bad news is, you should have insured your bike for 1.4k, as you would be laughing now!

Have you given that list to your insurance yet?? Do they know the spec? If not, good! Don't give it to them just yet.

coombsie66
03-12-2004, 07:23 PM
They dont know the spec yet, but the bike is insured for 1k i think, so the maximum they will pay out is £950 as there is a 50 quid excess. It is a bastard that i didnt insure it for more, but i think that the insurance costs went up when the price went over a grand. At least i should be able to get the full pay out thankfully! I dont think i'll be doin it for 3 weeks tho. (till i get home!)
Ive still got my eye on that orange, however i have a query with respect to size.
I am 5' 8" tall, i dont like too large a reach, and i want a bike that i will be able to chuck around/jump/trickride as well as commute on. But the fun factor is more important! Which size do u recon i should opt for? 15 or 17 inch. Im thinking 17 as the 15's are tiny and a 19 would be too big for me.

Thanks again for the help jon, is it common knowlege that the shops price at RRP or might it only be your bike shop?

jon_s
03-12-2004, 07:33 PM
It SHOULD be every shop, but if you have problems I can do it for you. However, in general where you get the valuation should be the place you purchase the new bike from, only as the shop has to do some work and the insurance co. may phone up to check e.t.c

With regards to the size....interesting! lol, I have not thought about size for ages! I always get the smallest frame because I like to chuck my bike about in the air, therefore smaller is better. The shop selling the Orange should be in a better position to advise you. My gut feeling is that 17 should be fine.

coombsie66
03-12-2004, 07:50 PM
Yeah, i think 15 might be a little tooo small. There is a HUGE bike store close to me at home, so i think i will approach them during the holidays, hopefully it should all come through for me!
I also need to invest in a BITCH ASS FUCK OFF chain and padlock. Those cunts arnt gettin another bike off me!!!! I think i might tripple lock it this time, just to be sure!

if it were me..id buy a $200 bike to ride to school..that way if someone steals it it wont be a huge deal..plus maybe they will steal the 1000 dollar bike next to ur $200 one..least u wouldnt have to walk home

lol, sorry, but that is not a question I hear a lot living in London!

A car is not pratical if you are commuting into central London.

that is insane..if there were problems like that in the US there would be protesters and picketers =)..exluding LA that seems to be the exception to the rule

Yeah, i am considering leaving my nice one at home and gettin a shitter for london, but riding in london is really really dangerous and i like having every confidence in my bike when im cycling here, so i dont really wanna ride a dog wiv shite brakes thats unreliable.
Plus that would mean giving in to the thieves, and im not about to be scared away from my rite to own a nice bike just because sum pikey cunt thinks its his place to take it.
Ive just gotta be smarter than them this time, i never thought they had the balls to do it in broad daylight next to security, and i didnt know they could pick the lock i had.
This time im just gunna make it impossible (bar use of a fuckin blowtorch or bolt croppers!) so steal.
They aint beating me!!!!!!!

u cant look at it like the roobers beat u...but u do have to look at it like some people suck and refuse to do anything to help themselfs so they steal shit

but i would get a like 400$ bike that should be good and reliable..w.o costing a ton

also remember if someone wants something bad enough nothing will stop them from getting it..just may take them longer

i am heavy into car audio/video...a friend of mine had his stereo stolen..i blame him kind of because he was an idiot made himself way to nice of a target..but i keep mine covered up and turned off when im going into a parking lot..just what u have to do suck but either that or ill walk out oneday and something will be missing

id use a quick release on the front tire..take it to school with me lol make it harder to steal and make them more conspicuos walking down the street

also somewhere on the bike where no one but u will think to look write ur phone number or addy or something..that way if it is recovred u can prove it is urs

Yeah, on the bike that was stolen it was locked up outside my college building! In the college grounds! The front wheel was off, and locked together with the rest of the bike to a bike rack. I spose i should have used 2 locks.
There are quite a few nice bikes locked up there, a lot of them use 2-3 locks.
The insurance doesnt pay out cash, only pay for a new bike, so if i get a cheaper bike for up here then i'll be paying out for it myself. So no point.
I think i will get it identity marked this time tho, ive heard there were 'trackers' for bikes now!?

Ive got a stealth system in my car too, standard headunit is adequate so i put an RCA converter behind it, to run to the boot, cus i cant be arsed with the hassle of people breaking into my car too!!
But thing is i understand this cus you have to leave your car outside overnight, but i would never dream of leaving my bike nywhere overnight, its always in my basement! And it was stolen in broad daylight in my busy college. People have some nerve!

That sucks dude. I had some stuff stolen from my apartment a few months ago and I still cannot express the anger/outrage it caused me. I only hope that whoever did it gets like attacked by a swarm of bees or something for karma (hah).

Unfortunately, college is like the number one place for bike thefts. Here, people don't even bother with nice bikes... it's almost like a contest to see who can find the shittiest old beater to ride to school .

i've had 3 bikes stolen so far, none as expensive as yours, but stolen none the less. all in my apartment building, with security.

about 2 years later, my car got stolen, in broad daylight, in one of the busiest suburbs in my city.

surprising, we still dont any forays into automotive tech development, or a lot of literate people, but you'll always find somebody on the roadside who knows how to break into a Mercedes(the newer models are tougher to break into). thats really saying something.

my friends entire stereo was stolen in the parking lot of his work in borad daylight..he was there to pick up his check but stopped to talk to someone took him maybe 45 mins to get back

i think it took us longer to get just the sub box inside of the car
