yea i saw that top gear episode..very interesting. Although i like the Rx-8 very much, i don't think its really equivilent to the M3. i think the M3 is slightly faster.

in terms of price. the RX takes the prize

in terms of looks. I think they're both pretty finely attired

tough call. i think they're both great.

m3 is defintl alot faster

even aroudn the track

the m3 tested on top gear was driven by old stig

and rx8 driven by the new stig

Wait... are you telling me that the RX8 is even competable with the M3?

The RX-8 is better: cheaper, with good power, excellent looks and great handling. Excellent car. One of my favourites... 8)

I love the way the RX-8 looks and the way its so perfectly Japanese, but just for cold blooded German power and clinical efficiency, it has to be the m3, and so it should to justify the price difference. Maybe the more suitable (and obvious) comparison is to the R32 (for the Rx-8)

they are totally differant class..
an m3 can buy 3-4 rx8's.

238bhp rx8 vs 333bhp m3.

rx8 is a good bang for its buck, but a nsx would be a better comparism with the m3.

but wit an M3 people will look at you differently then when you're in a MAZDA.

i disagree. the rx8 is more radical, and will therefor turn more heads. if im walking in town, im drawn to two things(carwise), looks and sound. If an M3 catches my eye, it does only that. Id assume its just another BMW. An rx8 on the other hand, I dont like the styling as much as the e46, but its more radical, and ive been known to turn my head toward that.

and why would a better comparison be between an M3 and the nsx? it costs over twice as much. Its the same thing, only price-wise the M3 is the bitch. they may be more similarly matched performance wise, but consider comparing a Saleen S7 to a ford GT. perhaps similar performance, but the price difference is outrageous.

M3 rules!!! The only advantage of the RX-8 that its cheaper...

But I think that the M3 deserves every coin!!! 8)

M3 doesn't cosr as much as 3-4 RX-8.....
rx-8 35.000 euro
M3 56.000 euro....
i don't trust the guy who tested the bmw m3 or the rx8 at top gear...
for me there is no comparison..if i had the 20.000 euro more i would buy without a second thought M3...it is just great...
by the way this wankel engine doesn't last for more...
oh i forgot it consums as minimus 23 lt/km

I like the M3 alot more. One more thing: I sat in the driver's seat of a RX 8 at the Canadian Auto show, and it's not at all a roomy car! I am 6' tall, and the interior was kinda too small for me. I can't say the same for the M3. I would go for the M3 if I had the $$$. It's just such a nice car....and the sound is killer!

Another vote for the M3 here.. of course I love the RX-8, marvellous car, but the M3 plays in a higher league and it's a more complete car IMO

u have to consider that the m3 has 3 models while the rx8 just has one.
m3 = convertable, coupe, csl with smg and manual.
rx8 = just the rx8 with auto and manual
so it can cost up to 5x more if it is a csl. and bmw's are more expensive in america than europe.

Just M power is enough for the comparison..
btw..
56.000 Euro is 2 cheap for a M3..

M3 vs M3 CSL
Hockenheim Â* 1.16,3 min Â* 1.13,5 min
Nürnburgring Â* 8.22 min Â* 7.50 min

RX8 wont beat CSL and regular M3 on those two tracks.

i cannot say how do much this cost in amerika.
also i think there is nothing to confront between csl and rx8....
csl confronts with other type of cars....
when i said 56000euro i obviously meant the standard version(whatever that means)not the convertible or the version with the smg..
but if you put smg 19inch wheels then you cannot compare rx8 with m3 because simply the rx8 doesn't have smg and other gadgets...

The reason the m3 was slower around topgear's tight track is weight. The body transitions are more apparent in the bmw which provided more than enough oversteer. In a straight line it will run away from an RX-8. It oversteered more in the video than the RX-8 and i think this is where the M3's time was lost. Neatly driven by the same driver the M3 will most likely win on the track. The RX-8 is a very good car but it is not in the same category as the beemer. These are road cars and in 5 years the RX-8 will be forgotten and dated while the beemer will still be something to behold. There is no real comparison here though. These two will not be cross shopped.

Weird comparison, but OK...

The RX-8 is a better head turner than the M3. There are so many styled 3-series rolling around that the coupé look of the Mazda gets more attention.

The RX-8 will not be forgotten in 5 years. The RX-series have a way longer history than the M3. In the High Octane movies they still race RX-2's.

BTW the RX-8 comes with two engine alternatives.

the shock value of the RX-8 will subside since they will sell 25,000 plus a year for the next few years. It is a pretty car but the styling comes from nowhere. Put another badge on it and no one would notice the difference. The BMW looks like a BMW. efficient, form follows function...There are no rotary accent packages for the beemer. the RX-8 is for the playstation set. I'm not knocking it but lack of low-end torque would make it very fun at the track and annoying on the road. you can't feel its absence through a controller. and besides winning le mans once in 89, and outside of Japan, where is the racing heritage? i've got an e36 m3 and i would take the new RX-8 over it, but not the E46. It is a highly desirable car while the rx8 is just desirable. It would be a tough argument for the rx-8 but the fact that we are comparing them does speak volumes about the mazda.

its either a choice between a japanize rice rocket or a german war horse. now which one are you going to choose?

THe german war horse.

LOL@calling the RX-8 a rice rocket. For your own good, check the definition of rice before making such claims. It makes you look really stupid.

I have driven the rx-8 and i must say it's quite a car, but i would definately say the m3 is a better car than the rx-8. But i would probably buy an rx-8 before an m3 and you've gotta love the rotary engine.

Silvia_Drift

They are both great cars but the M3 destroys the RX-8 in absolutly every category including price(higher), comfort, performance and looks. This is kind of a wierd comparision since these cars are obviously not in the same class. The only people who would take an RX-8 over a E46 M3 would be the rotary fans and the people who want a sports car for cheap.

for speed M3, for handling Rx8, for reliability, i would say they are quite equal, my friend has a new M3, and its amazing, but for almost 20,000 bucks cheaper, the rx8 looks realllly good...i was surprised at the top gear, and how they both got the same times along with the 350Z

i hear the new renesis rotary is night nearly as good as the old wankel. as far as modding purposes go, the wankel's structure allowed it to be built with unlimited amounts of rotors(I've heard of up to 6 rotor engines). The renesis is built differently and can have no more than 2 side by side. so from that standpoint, its less of a car. buts in its stock form, its ok.

Actually I thought RX8 was dissapointing. Even in yellow it looks kinda brab next to an M3, and theres no comparison when it comes to power or handling. Dont yuite see how they compte either, the Bimmer would leave the RX8 for dead at the Ring.

Dont you read. It was stated 2 posts above that they both got the same time along with the 350z.

personaly i don't trust the times of th top gear and i have a lot of reason for that...
i cannot believe that the rx-8 can make the same time as the bmw...sometimes the time laps that top gears shoes are alittle bit weard.like as if they "push"some cars..
and by the way the wankels are not reliable...even this new renesis....
consumes not only a lot of petrol but mazda gives a limited guaranty :fist:
and also ays to chech the oil engine every second time you fuel your car with petrol... :P
so donn't compare bmw's reliability with rx8...

i never compared the reliability jackass. but since you bring it up . .. you know its just easier to call you stupid.
