BMW 850

hey,
its just that ive been seing this car and not alot of people talk about it even though it has a v12, and its not really expensive and i dont know why, has anyone driven one?

they are great the trick is finding one with a clutch, well its hard in the US maybe easy for you in europe.

The 850 is an excellent car. I have driven a couple - it is one of the ultimate long distance grand tourers of our time - and can be currently picked up in the USA for as low as $15,000 USD.

The catch - it is a V12 BMW, and even though the car may be used and depreciated nicely in value, service, maintenance and parts are ungodly expensive.

So - if you want one, go for it, just don't expect it to be as cheap to run as a $15,000 Camry... ;)

BTW, I just remembered the final word about the 850 in evo, in their "knowledge" section... if I'm not wrong they rate it with something like 2 stars (max is 5) and the words say something like "just a grown up Ford Probe" :( one of the few sentences I didn't like in the 65 issues of evo so far...

It was never intended to be fast - just a "smooth cruiser". ;)

In fact the V8 840i is probably a better all rounder - much like the SL500 vs SL600 debate - with the 840CSi and 850CSi being the "sportiest" versions of the 8 series.

I actually drove one 850i back home. The power is damn smooth. You dont feel like its going fast, but it actually is. The suspension is awesome considering its fitted with M technic.

There's only one here in my hometown (850CSi). Black coloured, with AC Schnitzer wheels, and I'm guessing some mods either underneath the hood or inside.

A beautiful looking car, one of the few that Claus Luthe didnt attempt to make into a 'different length sausage' from the rest of the BMW range at the time.

Well, I've seen at least 3 different 8 series' (2xdark red, 1x black) in the BMW autogarage on my street. And I must say that it appears much better in real life than on photos.

Yep, that's the 8 series' allright.

The 8 series is a great looking car. The rear is really wide, marvellous to see! It's more of a high performance GT than a true sportscar. I haven't seen too many of them in all those years, but they're not ultra rare or anything.

I never said it was a bad car. I love how they look. My friend was looking for a sports car and he found an 850 for a good price. When he test drove it he was alittle disappointed in the performance of it. It has a great ride,but he wanted something fast. So, he bought a 2000 M3.

I just saw one yesterday. It the only one I have seen around where I live. Strange coincidence.

Actually some of the models had less than 500 or so produced - so it is not by any means a common car.

i used to want an 850 til i found out the amount of maintenance it would require for a 10+ year old car and gas consumption

An 840i would be a more sensible choice, although still not cheap to run.

The 850CSi had 4wheel steering... but still they said that it was not good in handling...who knows whats the truth... :wink:

also they said it costs a lot to drive it... actually the 840Ci was really nice...

that 4.4 liter engine is still good (Range Rover, X5,...etc.)...

There are two of these on my estate. One is blue and one is that purple colour. The owner of the purple one is really lazy....they drive to the station, which is a total of 5mins on foot lol

Appart from that, they are great cars. They eat petrol though. Starting to look a bit dated now. I would like to dive one, just to see what they are like!

They're very nice cars. The 840 was a V8 and the 850s had the V12. I remember taking a trip to Dinan once, and there was a twin turbo 840 on the lift getting serviced. I don't know what the power output was though. Here's a few that are done up and listed at the BMW M Registry:

The 850Ci was pretty nice apparently, but I don't know enough about it to talk. The 8-series front, and at the time rare flipping head-lights looks hot, but the rear looks plain.

The 850Ci was pretty nice apparently, but I don't know enough about it to talk. The 8-series front, and at the time rare flipping head-lights looks hot, but the rear looks plain.

The 840Ci had 286 hp and didn't have a V12, but a V8. The 850i and 850Ci had 300 hp and the 850CSi had 380. 286 hp may not be massive for a heavy car as the 840Ci, but it did hit 100 km/h in 7 seconds and had a top speed of 250 km/h, which isn't bad. The 850CSi did 0-100 a second faster than that.

i doubt it because it wasnt a sucess 4 bmw, and btw the 850i has 300 hp, the ci has like 320 ans the csi does have 380, and its top speed i think is 300 km/h cause i saw a pic of the speedometer

The 8 Series was the soul successor to the 6 series that vanished after the 80s. With the return of the new 6 Series, there won't be another 8 Series in the foreseeable future. It wasn't all that popular either (at least here in the US, not sure about everywhere else) due to the price.

It wasn't as performance oriented as an M5 and it wasn't as luxury oriented as a 7 Series. It fell in between where people weren't willing to pay that much for a car that was good at cruising straight, but with only one comfortable passenger.

Yeah it has a V12 engine, i have the road and track about this car, about 6.0 seconds for the 0-60 mph pass...i guess it´s to heavy, about 4400 lbs of weight....and not so powered...

Oh man!! I saw a black 840 today!! The sound it makes is just terrific!! I wonder how kickass is the V12 versions noise!!
