oh man..I feel your pain/anger! I lost 10 GB of car vids in August when I had to format...Good thing I had saved the other 10 GB...
Sorry dude!
ouch, thats gotta hurt,i would be PISSED if that happened to me with how long it takes to d/l in the first place

i don't know wut to do  . i had so much good vids and games on it plus my music collection
Then don't send it in for repair.
Simply buy a new hard disk - and ask them to set the system up using that new drive. Keep the other drives safey at home. Then simply access the other drives as data drives.
Doesn't seem like a big deal to me unless the hard disk/s actually failed.

and this is exactly why I bought a dvd writer.. regular backups are the thing to do ;)
Still - unless you are talking about a total hard disk failure - the data is NOT lost.
Reformat is not the answer to everything - and is very seldom the answer to anything.
I hope this is a lesson for all - take 1 disk - make that your Operating system disk (your C: drive) and put in other physical disks to be your D: etc drives...
Problem solved - now if you need some local peckerhead tech to "reformat" your system to fix an issue - no sweat - you data is safe.

i'm saving up to get a dvd writer so if this kind of thing happens to me at least my shit isn't gone forever (believe me i'd contemplate self-mutilation if that were to ever happen)
Whats the dig freaking deal here ppl? Hard drives are DIRT cheap now - so all you do is BUY another drive, back up your data to it and you are done.
Stuborn people deserve to lose their data.
We are talking about LESS than $100 for 100GB drive....

ask them not to format the data
or just buy a new HD if necessary so that u can preserve ur current HD

I tried suggesting this - but I think JW is populated by a bunch of computer illiterate jacka$$es... ;)
That's it - or people just like to whine about lost data, but not do anyhting to cure the problem,,,

its ok, RC45, i read this thread thinking the same thing.
just incase they missed it the first 10 times; dont format the drive, buy a new drive, set the new one as the master and the old one as the slave -- put a fresh install of windows on the new drive, and copy your data over from your old (now secondary) drive.
a 13 year old kid can do this kinda thing.. its no big deal at all.
if the computer repair place dosn't know what we're on about, turn on your heel and walk away.. :x

Informatic is not reinstall operating system every 2 weeks.
If your OS can't support software, it's not your fault of course, but ppl who created it should maybe think before making something (in particular M$).
And about CPU, I dont want to be a 'troll' on those forum but everyone think what he wants.
Amd is really cheaper than Intel, it's good CPU but need to be well cooled compared to Intel.
Ppl who want quality instead of 'performance' would better buy Intel ...
Again that's my point of view.

Burning, burning and burning ! That's a safe mean of keeping the vids else you can partitionate your HDD or buy a second one and save your datas in.

a second 'backup' partition on one drive isn't going to be of much help when the drive falls on its face.. :?

RC45, altezza, and enigmatic have all aready said it, data isnt lost if your operating system crashes and things get all wonky.
Simply buy a new harddrive, reinstall your OS, and presto, you can access your old hardrive from your new one, much like a floppy disk, only its permanent storage.
A MAxtor MaxDiamond9 PLus 120 GB (SATA - those harddrives with the thin cables that) would set you back U$120. A standard IDE one(witht hose big wide ribbon cables) would set you back 90 to a 100 dollars.
I;d suggest partitioning your main system harddrive into two, so that way, if you format the partition with your OS, the other partition, even if it's on the same hard disk, will not be affected.
Never keep data on tha partition that you have your OS installed.

the best bet would be having a fault tolerant RAID setup, with the prices of HDD these days, you cannot go wrong!!
i pay about AU$100 for 80gig and it will only be getting cheaper *GO THE AUSIE DOLLOAR*

oh and yeah since i bought my comp from radioshack (it's a fuking compaq ok? you wanna laugh at me? go ahead) i have to give it to them then they'll ship it off to compaq repair center.
in the meantime, i'm thinking of buying a better computer. my budget can only get me a good DELL or a good MDG computer so opinion is welcome, and i think this thread should be in the computer section too ;).

What good is a fast SCSI drive if you have no redundancy? And without a decent SCSI controller you will get no faster throughput than you would get from a decent EIDE - and the new Fast ATA are screamers - and unless you have a decent caching SCSI array controller, the SCSI setup in a regular PC setup is slower than an EIDE or ATA.
Dont bother with a IDE RAID - just have a second drive to use as a backup device.
For my sensative data, I have a Compaq Fibre Channel Array with a bunch of 18 and 36GB SCSI drives - 2 RAID 5 Arrays with online spare drive. The Array chassis is hotswap for 100% uptime.
For perfomance and video processing I just have a bunch of 40 and 120GB EIDE drives.
Data integrity is all a matter of cost/benefit.
You do the math and decide on priorities.
Then scale and spend accordingly.

well the new IDE standard will be much faster and more cost effective, but right now, most servers use SCSI since it provide much faster seek time. there's no need for us to use it though :D.
SCSI is also good if you edit lots of video and you're into like photography and stuff.

Bull - only when combined with a decent caching SCSI controller, 64bit bus, and PCIX card.
If you take a current top end PC and put a serial ATA drive in place with onboard controller - you will get more usable data throughput than if you took a PCI SCSI card and attached even a 15,000RPM 70+GB SCSI drive.
Servers use PCIX and 64BIT multi-channel caching SCSI adapters to get the insane throughput they do.
Without the rest of the peripherals you are throwing money away on SCSI.
It is like putting a 1000hp engine in a car, and then equipping it with snow tyres on narrow wheels.
Won't work as intended.
But if you want to blow your wad ;) and cash on a bunch of small fast SCSI drives, and then not be able to provide the backbone for it - be my guest.
Just don't get mad when your neighbour has 5x the storage space, and is faster, has redundancy and still spent 1/4 of what you did.
But hey - at least you will have SCSI... *shrug*
Servers and workstations - 2 different worlds.

we all in the same boat.....for me i have lost 2 pc for time being...the first one is my AMD 1800+ with 40GB Seagate HDD....the problem is that i have wrongly screwed the HDD to the casing...i screwed through the vacuum seal and when i start the pc....it shows that the master HD is failed..it takes a while before i realised what i have done....inside of HDD is vacuumed...so i get my vacuum cleaner and start to vacuum it and seal it with plastic tape...it works for 2 months and still i didn't make backup until it blows again and never can be recover again....so sad that i didn't make backup while i still can....the second one is in my office....that day i have to go for an outstation...when i get back to the office....i saw that my pc is turned off...when i took a closer look...i saw the pc is all wet...this is because the aircond water was leaking...and dripping to the pc...and that's it...all the hardware is damaged...and right now i'm using other staff pc to log in into jabbasworld......wonder when i will get a new pc in the office...

if I understood you correctly, then I can assure you - the hdd is probably 100% alright, it looks like you have something like MB or CPU fucked up. So if you can't get the disk out of your PC, then perhaps you can hope that the technicians will only replace that particular component and when the system boots alright, your HDD won't get formated...
