i kinda expected that cause they use that in race cars so it has to be resistant, but if it were miine i woudnt do that cause theyr expensive!

Yeah, I'm kinda surprised that they would do that too. It might not break, but it could definitly scaratch on the concrete like that. Like you said, even a scratch on CF is expensive to get fixed.

well they do have a hardware of those carbon fiber hoods so I doubt they care if they fucked up one

how strong is carbon fiber anyway? someone said it's ten times stronger than steel but i highly fuckin doubt it seeing how easy it cracks in rally or gt racing

I believe it's supposed to be ten times stronger than steel by weight. Not sure though.

Carbon is damn strong. It just depends on how it's built. Like the videos showed, those hoods are pretty strong. But I've seen one smashed to bits by someone jumping on it.
The race cars need to have crumple zones, basically, the carbon has to have some give to it. Otherwise every wreck would end in serious injuries to the driver. By the car absorbing some of the impact, it makes it a bit easier on the occupants.
The Royal Swedish Navy built an all carbon fiber ship not too long ago. One of it's main purposes was for mine sweeping. Mines use magnets to attract it to a ships hull, so building one out of carbon is a good idea. Considering that it is used as a mine sweeper, it has to be able to withstand the blast if one or possibly more were to go off. So, if it can be built to withstand a blast from a mine, I'd say it's damn strong. Carbon also screws with sonar.
I was at Winona University the other day with a friend (he is going to school there for composite materials engineering) they had all kinds of stuff on display. A little I Beam that held as much weight as a steel I beam that was 10 times the size and weight.
My friend was showing me this machine that tests the strenght of certain materials. They had pictures of this little piece of carbon fiber, it was about the size of a ruler. So about 12" long, 1" wide and about 1/4" thick. They stretched it out, it took something like 50,000 lbs to break it. My friend says it makes little pinging sounds when it's being streatched. The sound is all the individual strands breaking.
So, yes, carbon can be damn strong. It just depends on how it's built. You could make a sheet that you could put your fist through with a weak punch or make it strong enough that you could hit it with a sledgehammer reapeatedly and have nothing happen to it.

Well I had no idea that commercial CF was in fact that strong. Can you have different strengths of CF or is it just a case of the density of the weave?

Yes, you can get different strengths of CF. The weave does have a bit to do with it, but depending on the application, sheets need to be glued together. So, it just depends on how it's built.

It's not that it's too brittle, it's too expensive for most RC cars. I've seen carbon fiber chassis for RC cars, and they are damn expensive. You've also got to consider the amount of flex it'll have. That is one of the great things about CF, bend it all over and it'll go back to it's original shape. So on a RC car, the chassis might have too much flex. Which will screw with the handling.
There are CF parts for RC cars, but look at the prices. It's not just because it's an expensive material, but the build and design process is expensive.
There is a company that is making CF clutch shoes, I'm curious to see how they do, but a lot of people have their doubts.
When it comes to RC stuff, it's usually carbon-graphite. It's strong enough, stiff enough, and light enough for most people. It's also considerably cheaper than CF.
If it is weaker or more brittle, it's not the carbon fibers fault, the person who designed it is to blame. But companies have to be able to sell the stuff, so they use cheaper matrials and methods of building it. If they were to do it so that it's as strong as it can be. Simple chassis for most cars would be just way to expensive.
Case in point, xtremerracing has a chassis for the TerraCrusher. It's an aluminum skeleton with a CF inlay. It's $450
I guess the best explanation of why CF is not too weak or brittle is to look at all of the different ways it has been used. If it was too weak or brittle, a mine sweeping ship would have never been built out of CF. The Enzo wouldn't be almost entirely CF, same for most other cars. Many airplanes have CF parts.
Yes, the ship is the Visby Class Corvettes, thank you for posting the name. I had forgotten what it was called! :D It's pretty cool if I must say so myself. It's basically a giant jet ski. They use big diesel engines that work in the same way of a jet ski (sucks in water and shoots it out to move it). It also goes almost 60mph. Which is quick for how big it is!

The most important aspect of Carbon Fibre's strength is actually the resin used. However, kevlar is stronger, lighter and even more expensive (specific weight) although both are weak as heck compared to Boron and Beryllium, although both of them are no good for cars (Boron is crystaline and is used on the Space Shuttle, and Beryllium, although the lightest of all metals and a third of the weight of aluminium, is poisonous unless treated).
