OK, it comes as a surprise to me that very few of us on this board actually modify our cars (for performance). I'd like to get a feeler for who is out there actually wrenching and tuning...no cronic BS'ers--we'll call you out!

I'll start off:
Miata 1.6L: 270RWHP@15psi boost. 1/4 mile in 12.8

I would love more performance, ive got a K&N and cat back on my car at the moment. I know these dont increase performance, but my next mod is an ST 170 (a 2 litre focus 1 up from my car!) exhaust manifold, tubular, 4-2-1. Then a chip, and i fancy playing around wiv my inlet cam timing, as at the moment my power curve flattens off at 4k ish and peaks at 5.5k even tho the engine revs till 6900!! I change up at 6k, so there's still room for improvement on the standard cams!!
I cud do a turbo conversion on mine, a lot have been done, but they start at about £5k, which i dont have!!
A 12 second miata, thats the same as the MX5 over here aint it!? How come u didnt use the 1.8 lump?
270 RWHP has gotta b a handfull in a car that light!!!

You chaps get the ST220 turbo over there, don't you? I had seen a few of the development mules on the track, and they were screamers!

I used the stock 1.6L mill that came in my car from the factory (bone stock internals--even the head has never been off the car!). The 1.8L has more torque, and overall potential, but when I started (first w/ a S/C), I never knew how deep into the power quest I would get.

Does having a whole new engine built count? I swapped the old 283 out of my Nova and had a 355 built. Ive never had it on a dyno, but all the old school hot rodders I know estimate it to be around 400-420hp at the crank. Whatever the hp is it was good for 12.19 in the quarter, of course, it doesnt really turn or stop for shit, but hopefully im gonna get another project car to fill my turning desire.

I haven't done much recently, the garage in my apartment building isn't heated so it's just to damn cold to spend hours lying on the concrete floor. You can see what I've done in my sig. I also have new toys for the Porsche in a corner of my apartment waiting for the weather to warm up. I've got a 35mm tial wastegate, bigger turbo (K27/6), manual boost controller, performance chips (of course), and I don't know how much other stuff. I'm also replaceing the downpipe with a new one, and I have to replace some lights on the BMW.

There, that's about it. :D

Youve got a nice looking Porsche Epic. I dont know too much about that particualr model, it looks similar to a 944. What differences/similarities between yours and a 944? Reason I ask is one of my roomates has a 83 944 sitting in the driveway that he wants to fix up but hes not really sure what he wants to do with it. He was thinking about putting a later model turbo motor in since his is just a slant NA 4.

Any thoughts on what can be done to his car would be appreciated :D

I've been quite extensive in my modding. I love speed. You can read below a VERY short list of some of the more major things that I've done. I also have a new set of ported and polished heads and cam that will be going in shortly, along with a smaller blower pulley and a single front mount intercooler system. Should bring me up to about the 625 rwhp / 590 rwtq mark. Also will have to go with an 8 rib pulley system as I'm sure I'll be encountering slippage issues with the current 6 rib set I'm running now.

Coombsie-- the Miata motors are essentially N/A versions of the old 323GTX (remember those AWD turbo hatches?) motors, and are notorious of being over-engineered from the factory (ala 2Z-GTE from Supra Turbo)...they withstand amazing amounts of abuse-- tripling stock horsepower on stock internals and maintaining stock reliability...simply amazing.

As far as high octane goes: Regardless of what people might say, there is little benefit to running high octane gasoline (over 93) unless your car is HEAVILY modded. The fact is that the later model cars are designed to give optimum performance at 91 or 93 octane. Once you start hitting up the 1/4 mile, you'll see gas for sale thats sometimes 110+ octane. I promise you that unless you have a 800+hp car, you'll only pick up a few horses (like 3 or maybe 4 if you're lucky and the stars are aligned right). The fact is that the higher octane gas will just burn a little cleaner and give you a little better fuel economy. My Corvette is designed to run optimally between 91-95 octane. If I go much higher than that, I will actually begin to see declines in performance.

So to answer your question for octane in Colorado-- 91 always, 93 if I can find it. thats about it.

Depends on if you are doing your own tuning or relying on somebody else's pre-programmed chips.

I have a fully programmable ECU and can store multiple maps. Higher octane enables me to run higher boost without detonation. The difference in 1psi higher boost for me has netted around 10RWHP on average. Trust me, 30RWHP in a 2200 lb car makes a real difference.

actually my mr2 turbo is set to run off about 96 octane with the jspec motor and ecu....
it has NOTHING to do with whether or not you are making 800+hp. in fact it's all about how the tuning/modifying is done. for instance, i could increase ignition timing on a ford pinto to the point of needing higher octane and it will be far from 800 hp still......or turbocharge an s2000 motor and be forced to run off much higher octance(yes 100 is easily feesible) with a higher peak boost pressure due to its rediculous compression.

Im always changing my mind about where I eventually want the car to end up. As it looks right now, im just saying screw all forms of convention and turning it into a straight drag car (with the possibility of the occasional sunday cruise). Of course its gonna take some cash and a whole lot of time before that happens. I thought about making the Nova a pro touring type track car but I have changed my mind and now I want to turn a Datsun 510 (with SR20DET  ) into my track special.

My ultimate goal is to have a car for every occasion. Street rod, sports car, track car, strip car, daily driver, and a Ferrari.

I don't currently wrench on either of my cars, but I wrenched extensively on a car I just sold. It was a 1985 Corolla GT-S (AE86) with a 1.6L @ 230RWHP at 14psi. It was a track car with 4 point rollbar, blah blah blah. In the final year of ownership, it was set-up for drift and my friend piloted it to two third place finishes and a first place finish in some drift competitions in Southern California (the BattleVersion car). Got it in some photos in the various import car mags covering the events and a few Japanese video mags including Drift Tengoku Vol. 14 - covering the first drift competition in the US (we took 3rd after a blown headgasket just before the final round).

I can't say I miss working on cars. I think I've moved out of the heavy duty stuff and would rather do driving instead. I guess I've gotten lazy.

I know there are lots of people who never enter a drag strip in their life, I only say that it seems like people from the US are much more into it than others cuz when there is a discussion about how fast a car is its always the 1/4 mile that comes up.
while in europe its more how fast a car is around a track, we dont talk so much about "most bang for buck" its more about handling and not so much about the straight line speed.

True, many of the rabid American performance fans go straight for 1/4, but if you think about it, it's a pretty universal comparitor for power/weight. We could talk track times, but very few Americans are going to the same track (even the road course fanatics)--we mostly go the the regional tracks that are near to us. Sure, incredible tracks like Laguna Seca and Road Atlanta are open to the public, but drag strips are EVERYWHERE.

not yet, been sorting out lil things amazing how things can keep you from tuning properly, but its sorted now, and i will be taking it to the local 1/8th mile track soon. with the alrger intercooler i turned th boost up to 22psi
and soon will have some slicks for the front..i should be easily into the 12s, high 11s if i can hook up. i have looked at several cars of the same type running the smaller (2 liter) 3sgte running the same power i should be making and thats what they run...so i should have the advantage seeming i run a bigger motor (2.2 liter)..it should be interesting :D if i had to guess the hp at the crank, i would say i am pushing 400hp or so...but thats jut a guess

first off i have to say, im not yet a major tuner. ive changed plug wires map, and o2 sensors, and adjusted the timing on my old saab 9000 t. ive replaced the u joint, carburator, timing, and electronics a bit on my bronco II, and im no longer looking to tune my jeep, as i ~need~ a sportscar this sumer.

important things to americans i speak with regularly are quite invovled in judging a car by several things in no particular order
lateral handling characteristics
accelleration to 60...(70 really being the speed limit on most of the highways in MI)
1/4 times/speed
stopping distance
ground clearance
drive type
torque
horse power
transmission type

a car can have decent lateral skidpad, but ive driven a few with little feedback through the steering wheel. that makes the event much less predictable
accelleration speaks for itself
braking, ive had one car (chevy celebrity) which had terrible fade, it stopped terrible, but eventually...im concerned if its fade free, and fairly quick

it must also be realized in the way american roads predominantly exist, and formed compared to european counterparts. we've got roads that are much straighter, for longer distances, and werent created around nature, but rather on top of nature, or dug into it/above it. this is why i believe the straights are so important to us, is its what we have and live around. its entirely different circumstances to our friendly neighbors overseas and such, and i hate it being called out as narrow minded; as it is what we deal with day to day.
i also believe that i am not in such a small minority that loves turns. im not so sure this post will stop american 1/4 =dumb flames, but maybe it will help some understand.

Yes you are right that it is a universal comparitor for power/weight, but for me it doesnt mean nothing if a car runs 10 on the 1/4 mile if it cant handle its not fast IMO.
Of course its nice to see a top fuel dragster go down the strip but thats about as extreme it have to get to be interesting IMO.
to compare cars on how fast they can go down 1/4 of a mile is ok but it doesnt tell the most important stuff, and that is how it drives.
And thats what makes a car fast.
I have seen "street cars" doing high 10`s get eaten on a track by cars that does the 1/4 in 14`s, wich is the fastest car in your opinion?[/quote]

Which car is faster? The answer is "YES". A car is a tool, and there are different tools for different jobs.
Which is my personal preference? The answer again is YES. While I personally am a road course freak, I have respect for the guys who are building crazy motors and nailing the tree lights just so.

But for my comparitor point, what would it mean to you if I told you I turn 1:28 lap times at Gingerman Raceway? For the vast majority of people out there, probably nothing. If I told you I'm running in the 12s, it speaks to a lot of people. The fact that I can also turn 1:28 at Gingerman speaks to the fact that my car is extremely well-rounded.

I have a slightly modified Honda Prelude Type SH. Don't know how much power I put down to the wheels though. I never put the car on the dyno machine. My modifications are Mugen header, fan switch, thermostat, JDM S-Spec piston, rods, valve, valve springs, throttle body, ported & polished head, Crower stage 2 cams.

I wouldn't consider internals slightly modified IMO

Well, it's nothing big or spectacular.

Definitely not "slightly modded". Who did the engine build?

Hey guys, i've got a 67 for mustang, no not a fastback as everyone askes me, it did come with the stock 289 windsor, tho that didnt last for very long. Since i have had the car i have installed 2 different motors. The first motor me and my father installed was a 351 Windsor with 10.5:1 pistons, solid cam and a rebuilt 671 Blower built by NEWBY over here in OZ. With the 4 speed toploader that engine was awesome.......until we kept getting defects because of the height of the engine. So out came the blower and on with a standard manifold and holley......until the oil pressure in the engine decided to give itself up. Then came the current engine which has been in the car now for bout 3-4 years running fine. Its a 302 Windsor with under the bonnet twin 4's, twin elderbrocks, chev valves, 10.5:1 pistons, bored 30 thou over, unfortunately only a hydraulic cam in this engine though. The 302 is obviously nothing compared to the old 351 which is still sitting on an engine stand in our garage, but the 3.55 gears installed in the car certainly make it feel a bit better.

Sorry Guys, No Turbo's Here!!!!

Wow, are there many classic American muscle cars running 'round in OZ?
BTW, Corky Bell used to have a twin-turbo kit for the stangs, didn't he?

You specify "modified motors only" in the topic title...most of my mods have been focused on trying to get my 35 year old car to handle correctly in preparation for the motor I'm building (very slowly unfortunately). My hope was to get a reliable ~400 horspower and leave compression low enough to use regular pump gas and/or add a power adder later. This is what I came up with as the most economical way to that power:

'69 Ford 351W block .030" over
Scat 3.85" stroker crank (392 CI)
Eagle I beam rods
Forged TRW pistons
Standard moly rings
Edelbrock Aluminum Heads (1.94"In/1.60"Ex)

So far about $3K US in parts and machine work and another couple hundred in tools specific to the engine and about $10K in tools overall for my "shop".

sweet...what have you done to the suspension?

Well I started at the ground with bigger rubber...235/45 17 in the front on 17x8 wheels, 285/35 17 in the back on 17x9.5 wheels. The rear suspension is the stock 9" and leafsprings for now. I haven't decided on a final format for the rear. Next I addressed the brakes (which is a work in progress...I hope to have a revised system this year). The current set up is 11" disks up front on Granada spindles (has the benefit of disks + a larger spindle/bearing combination) and 12" rears with some small Wilwood "Dynalite" calipers and an adjustable proportioning valve. The front suspension uses relocated tubular upper control arms (Global West) and solid heim jointed strut rods (radius rods). The sway bar is a 1" adjustable unit. Everything else including the steering is new stock style parts, front shocks are adjustable (Koni classics...a hassle to adjust), rear are non adjustable KYB's. Front springs are stock rate and height, the car is slightly lowered fron the revised front end geometry.

Plans for this year and early next year include:

Finish the engine...
Subframe connectors...
Possible roll bar...
Finalize a rear suspension format...
Revised brake system...
maximum tire size fitment...
Possible rack and pinion steering install...
Scale the car...
Surface plate inspection of suspension geometry...

Hi! I've been lurking around these forums for a while, and I thought id share my modified cars with you guys. Some of you probably know me from racingflix. I kinda already posted this in the what cars do you drive section, but I figure ill get more respect here. heh

The first one is a 1978 Corvette. It has the original block with the whole performer RPM package. It makes about 420 hp and 415 ft/lbs of torque. The transmission is a muncie M-21 four speed w/ a gearvendors under/overdrive. It has a modified front and rear suspension. In the rear, it has a transverse fiberglass leaf spring with bilstien shocks. The front was converted from upper and lower a arms with springs to a transverse leaf also. Both front and rear have fully adjustable ride height. It has sparco racing seats and a momo steering wheel. Both front and rear urethane bumpers were removed for custom fiberglass ones. Oh yeah, and it has almost open sidepipes. The only thing I haven't finished is the bodywork, which you can see.

The BMW is a 1982 320i w/ a 3.5 litre six from a 1991 535i (hence 335i). The modifications to the engine are a chip (proven to make 250 hp or more) an intake, and valvesprings. The transmission is a getrag five speed with a 3.94 limited slip rearend. The whole suspension was ditched for E30 coilovers, 200lb springs rear, 400 front. Both front seats were removed, and in their place Momo seats and a momo steering wheel now sit. In place of the 15 inch stockers are 16 inch, 3 piece wheels w/205 rubber. Fiberglass hood. Front and rear bumpers both removed, made custom ones. A lot of bolts were replaced with titanium and aluminum. My dad runs a business called www.titaniumfasteners.com, specializing in lightweight racing bolts and nuts. He is also a certified distributor of ARP and Stage 8 fasteners. Thats about it, hope you like the pictures! (well, maybe not the ones of the corvette, ill take some good ones tomorrow.)
