There is an issue with the two DNS servers that JW uses for sending out e-mail. To send e-mail the server needs to have relyable contact with its DNS servers to do the proper domain name resolution. When the connection to these servers times out mail is placed in a que for later delivery. On a set schedule the mailer tries to resend.

Since I do NOT have control over the outgoing DNS servers I cant tell you when mail flows and when it does not. All I can say is on occasion you will click submit and it will take a VERY long time to load the next page. This is because the script is busy trying to talk with the out going DNS servers.

A trouble ticket has been opened with our datacenter and they are aware of the issue and im sure are trying to figure out a resolution. This was also a small issue last week this timeframe.

As for the lag issue on the home page. I dont know but im sure it has to do with the outgoing DNS server since the first time I saw it was this morning.

I have been having the long load time for home page problem also. It sometimes times out with page not found (happened again 02.13.04 several times). However, when I use http://www.jabbasworld.net/index.php to go directly to forum paqe always loads quickly. That does not seem like dns problem since I can enter the site fine to forum index page.

Well the front page has a fair number of database queries written into it. The largest of those is the Online today list. The birthday list seems fairly long aswell. On top of that you have the listing of the latest posts and in the middle is the random photo scripts. Each random photo is its own script/database query to only select photos randomly from select categories.

Each of these queries take a small amount of time. Depending on the server load at that given second(s) the queary could take a few milliseconds longer than others. Combine this with the processor building the html for the page on the fly after the info from the database has been gathered and then have all this information sent to you over the internet only to have your local system rebuild the page in your browser.

The bday and whos online today querie are also performed on the index page but overall there are less queries on the index page and thats why it loads somewhat faster some times.

The server JW runs on is no wheres close to being overloaded or over used but load can fluxuate from time to time expecially when there are 7600 members.
