I'm genuinely interested in picking this one up. It cures most of my ailments that are wrong with the iphone IMO....
true plug and play
open source marketplace
USB style power charge/ refer back to plug and play
keyboard included
trac-ball is reviewed as a well working feature.
better integration of gagety tech; and a lot of future potential based on the open source style of the phone.
1 megapixel higher camera
sim card is not bricked
more potential than rubbing your socks on a thick carpet and aiming your finger at an unsuspecting person.
better maps/ gps integration
things I don't like...
design is bland
multi touch is not integrated yet
People complain about the ATT network; however, T-mobile is even more limited.
does not include a base 8gb sd card.
no built in video
2 year contract required
not available initially for "all" carriers
perhaps brought to market "too soon"
video player isn't built in (but can be downloaded... making encoding videos in mp4 unnecessary)
no std. headphone jack
it's not perfect.... and there are rumors of a host of "android" phones being created

I don't like the look of the phone. I really like my iPhone honestly.

Here's Gizmodo's review on it:

Looks like a cool phone, but it does have some issues. Might wait until 2nd Gen?

Maybe, but I'm strongly considering jumping this one a bit sooner. One issue, Michigan has zero 3g support from T mobile at this point.

the only thing keeping me from getting this is the fact that T-mobile absolutely blows in the New York/Jersey area

Wal Mart have announced they will be selling the phone at a $30 discount to T-Mobile stores; meaning, $150 for the G1 phone.... and another 30$ to spend on a 8 gb micro SD card, (or go for the gold, and get the 16 gb card )
I'll almost definitely be getting this ugly, but damn cool phone very soon :)
G1 is definitely the closest competitor to the iPhone!
...but, in my opinion, it's not there yet. (without even considering the terrible looks...yuk)
The great thing about phones like the G1 and iPhone however, is that the phone gets better over time with new updates to the software, for no extra charge.

I really haven't got a clue how they could have such a lousy product design... there is so much talent out there.
I was playing with the g1 yesterday for about 30 minutes. Menus are easy to figure out. The first thing to realize when operating a g1 is that it isn't an iphone. Once that is out of the way, the phone becomes a great phone to compare against it.
Some thing's that I'd like to see.... built in software with custom eq's to be saved. Plug and browse capability (plug in the phone into a laptop, and use it as a modem to connect to the web... apparently is under development)
You are 100% right that these phones are always getting better. I don't think things like this reward early adoptors so much; but iphone gen 1 users aren't upset with their iphone a year later.
Still, the best reason for the g1 IMO is the features that it can do that an iphone never will be able to...
true plug + play
replaceable battery
true USB interface
upgradable micro sd hc card
and a few other reasons too :P
Still r2r, your phone seems like it has a superior GPS system, and camera even still.
^ Thanks. I'm going to have to stop by t-mobile store tomorrow to play with the G1 :-)
