Audi will soon end production of its A4 Cabriolet, leaving the TT convertible as the lone drop top in the German automaker’s lineup. The departure of the A4 Cabrio will leave a clear gap in Audi’s lineup, but that void doesn’t look like it will be open for long.

Our spy photographers were able to snap the first pictures of Audi’s performance-minded S5 Convertible.

Unlike the trend in the luxury drop top segment, Audi will forgo a heavy retractable hard top in favor of a lighter and more conventional soft top.

Powertrains for the for the S5 convertibls should mirror that of its sedan counterpart. That means the S5 convertible will offer a 354 horsepower 4.2L V8 with the same transmission options — which should give BMW’s 335i Convertible a run for its money.

If you like what you see, you may want to drop everything and place a deposit at your local dealer. With the S5 and A5 coupes already in short supply and high demand in the U.S., the convertible versions of these coupes may be even harder to come by in America.

The S5 convertible should go into production in Ingolstadt sometime in the latter half of 2009. Look for the official debut at either the L.A. or Detroit auto show.

Even better looking than the coupe?
