This guy almost gets it; but misses the key point.
Cars are the personification of freedom. The ability to go where you want, when you want, and how you want. Freedom to choose if you so want to burn 4mpg of fuel at 254 mph, or 50 mpg of Cetane @ 60 mph. And everything in between. Take that freedom away, and the people will revolt.

sports cars vs. economy cars

Refer to above opening statement.

hybrid vs. the real solution

Agree that hybrids are far from the solution. It is pathetic that there are government hand-outs to encourage people to buy these piles of future diarrhea. Let people who want them buy them. Don't force it on ME.
trucks vs. ?

luxury vs. economy

There will gradually be more luxury cars that get better fuel efficiency for those who want it; but there will be sacrifices. Namely, luxury, or economy. Luxury adds too much weight to efficiently move in a manner that feels good to the motorist. What will happen when the BMW driver no longer can pass you while flipping the bird? He'll flip you the bird still, but won't be revving the piss out of the engine since it doesn't rev. ;)

power vs. economy

Refer to opening statement.

market determine the cars vs. government determine the cars (we are allowed to drive and buy)

When was the last time the Government ran something effectively that worked?

Government driving the car vs. human driving the cars (Living room entertainment vs. driving entertainment)

The people will revolt. There is a reduction in freedom at that point.
