Car stereo question

I just ordered a Pioneer AVX-P7000CD 7 online but after some reading I realized that another component called the "brain" goes with these type of units (sold seperate).

Will I be able to use the 7000 unit without the "brain" and what features will it have, CD? Radio?

I read that it will barely work without a "brain" very basic not worth whatever you paid
