Anybody watch Olympic ceremony last night?

It was probably one of the best coordinated and visually stunning ceremonies to date!

You can watch replay here:

It was spectacular alright. But it left me kind of cold. I don't know what it was, but I thought the Australian and Athens Olympic opening ceremony was a lot more memorable. And the whole thing kinda came off as chintzy. Though, I have to say that the "running" the circumference of the stadium to get to the "cauldron" was very novel.

i thought it was pretty insane how much did they spend on it 100 million or something a ton of people and they can do fireworks like no one else i thought it was visually stunning

I'd agree that it probably didn't have as much emotional value as previous ones, but it was out of this world in terms of performances.

Actually your a bit off. Estimated cost is $40+ billion :-)

To put that into perspective...

In the past hundred years, the summer 2004 Olympics in Athens had the biggest price tag - 7 billion Euros. Preparations for it dealt a serious blow at the Greek budget - it developed a 5.3% deficit, which exceeds by far the European Union's admissible threshold.

P.S. some cool preparation for the Olympics pictures I came across

Gonna try and find a torrent for it, every link I see has either been removed or needs to download some plugin to see or cannot be played because I am in the US.

Oh man it was insane! I mean all the actors dancing. Hundreds at the same time and doing the same movements at the same time. I nearly thought that if one of them got it wrong they would get shot afterwards just as you did for making a mistake while marching like in the past

And the fireworks were purely belter!

Yeah. The Athens one was emotional because it'd been too long since the Olympics were held in Greece. Although their "cauldron" looked like a huge ass joint.

Sydney was great too. I still remember Cathy Freeman having to stand without doing anything for like 5 minutes with the torch in her hand because the cauldron raising mechanism broke during the opening ceremony. Then she went on to win a gold medal, becoming the first Aborigine to do so. It's my favorite lighting ceremony.

Very good opening cermony I really enjoyed the drums in the beginning, and the upload is very cool of you, but I want someone to upload somewhere some of the lesser known sports, like fencing and other stuff.

I saw shooting plates on the TV, but not judo. Judo sounds cool to watch at their level.

It now has been admitted (in Beijing Times, by a member of the olympic committee) that the part with the giant footprints actually was a 55-second long animation (!!!). It took a year to make, they even added some vibration to make it look like it was shot from a helicopter.

I couldn't find the original article in engliah, but this probably is as good:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26139005/

They do have some valid reasons for using an animation instead of real fireworks. I'm 100% that the chinese could have made it using real fireworks if they would've wanted to. After all, the final shots near the stadium were real.

I have to admit, the animation was REALLY good. Seriously, it was unbelievably realistic.

Real or not, it was fantastic entertainment. When it looks good, you really don't care.

Actually you should care.

This entire Olympics is a PR sham for the Chinese.

The little singer even lip-synced because the "perfect voice" didnt hve the "perfect face" and vice-versa.

It looks like the image-concious West fell for this ultra-extravagant sham hook, line and sinker.

It is a shame that the only "real" people and activities surrounding this Olympic are the athletes themsleves, and everything else is pure window-dressign to try "convince" the West that modern China is a free and democratic ally.

When athletes have to make public appologies for "insulting the host country" for wearing breathing masks because the air is so polluted they have no choice but to wear them, you know something is wrong with the whole picture.

HeilSvenska

SHIZL

yeah but its the same everywhere just a little more there pretty funny even the people in china wear those masks so why does the media blow that out of proportion

Mattk

Well I personally don't care what PR tricks they show up. They've never had me convinced they were a free and democratic country because they're not and they've never really tried hard at being one. That doesn't matter. It's the Olympics, and the Olympics are about sport. The opening ceremony is about entertainment and that's really it.
