Silverstone 2008 Incident -- Press Release

Following the incident involving Kimi Raikkonen and Paul-Henri Cahier on the starting grid of the British Grand Prix in Silverstone, that saw the finnish driver assault the photographer, we decided that it was necessary to clarify a few points.
There never was any contact between the two men, nor did Paul-Henri ever touch Kimi's equipment. Furthermore, the distance at which Paul-Henri Cahier was taking a picture, although close, was completely standard. The photographers who take pictures at Grand Prix races are all professionnals who have been accredited by the FIA, and as the dozen other photographers who were standing next to Paul-Henri Cahier prove, there was nothing unusual or unethical about this situation.
Finally, Paul-Henri Cahier has been an F1 photographer for almost fourty years and has been close to the greatest champions, but none of them has ever behaved in such a rude manner. It is understandable that drivers might get irritable because of the pressure they undergo, but Kimi Raikkonen never even attempted to express his discontent in a non violent way. Paul-Henri Cahier luckily did not suffer any injury, and so does not intend to take any action, but he regrets the arrogance with which Kimi Raikkonen treated someone who was merely doing his job.Raikkonen loses his cool at Silverstone 2008 - YouTube

My question is...why? Was it the weather?

Wow.. I'm really surprised....
I'm a Kimi fan. Strange to see this outta him though. :-( Would like to know his side of the story.

It's been on the headlines in here, his manager said that Cahier really was standing on Kimi's gear.

Wow.. what a pussy.

"did'nt suffer any injury"... no shit - he squatted down on the guys stuff... pushing him away was a natural and normal reaction.

When did the "west" become populated with whining pussies?

Okay, so from the video you can clearly see that Kimi looks down to his gear, then, pushes the photographer away...In that case I think his actions were justified, seeing as those drivers usually have special 'routines' on the grid. However, I also think it was maybe just a little bit excessive; if that grass was concrete or a tyre warming generator, I'd be sorry for the back of that man's head.

The really interesting thing though...is after the ensuing lull where the Cahier gets back up..the other photographers all swoop in...all at the same time!

Definitely excessive from Raikonnen, but Cahier was definitely in his way. Raikonnen was in the middle of putting on all his gear and Cahier was very unprofessional and disrespectful to get in his way.

Yeah, but still, I think 4th is by no means disastrous. The photographer is in his way, but I guess not really annoying enough to justify the pushing.

Sounds like something Vanilla Ice would say. "That nigga was annoying. I was burnin' with anger, so I gave him some ice told him to chill! Ice ice baby! Word to ya mother!"

It's interesting that they don't show anything before he pushed Cahier out of the way, just the photographers taking reaction shots. I'd say Kimi was justified.

not that big of a deal my perspective, legally speaking he should go to anger management classes as most people are required in that situation in the limelight it was a bad move on both parts there should be someone there to make sure that doesent happen to kimi or any of the drivers dont know what he was standing on or how much it meant to him over the safety of others or ferrari prob couldnt afford to replace it weird

Today Kimi himself has said that first the camera hit him on the helmet, and then he saw a photographer standing on his fireproof hood (the one that goes under the helmet). He also said that this fuss is getting out of proportion.

The push was justified though, Cahier was standing on Kimis gear and touching him. Cahier just whines like a little girl.

He got away easy, F1 drivers from the old days would've ko'd him. Somebody like James Hunt :D

hahahaha poor photographer got pushed like a little bitch

but like i said on the other thread about whether or not hamilton is arrogant.... these guys are only human, i mean think about the circumstances... wrong strategy, a few spins, being lapped by hamilton, then an annoying photgrapher comes by and stands on his gear ... it just wasn't his day

I don't think it matters what the camera guy was doing he might have been in the wrong but it doesn't give kimi the right to just shove him over, hes the professional that gets paid the big bucks hes got to keep his cool even when others are unprofessional. I don't think Lewis or Alonso or Massa would do such a thing, so why does Kimi get to do it and everyone is okay with it?

Because Kimi isn't Lewis or Alonso or Massa or anybody else. You want 20 corporate-friendly clones on the grid? It's moving in that direction, and the racing ain't getting any better because of it...

Give me a break.

This is a win/win situation for his reputation for being an emotionless robot on and off the track. Doing this in front of the media is nothing but an advantage for the "Iceman" persona.

The only time we don't see it is when has a little too much.

Doesnt give Kimi the right? What exactly gave the whiny photog the right to enter his space and touch his equipment?

Just because he gets paid he has to put up with tht kind of stupidity? The photog is also being paid, so he should know better than getting in the driver face.

The knife cuts both ways. I think the entire issue is beign blown out of proportion. Someone suggested anger management?

Are we for real here?

moment before Kimi pushese him, you can clearly see the "umbrella man" telling the photographer to move away and showing him that he is standing on Kimi's stuff.

Or Senna, Prost, Mansell or Hunt? Get real! Crouch down balancing a camera and ask a 3 year old child to push you and you'll fall over, its just not a big deal.

Lewis ran into the back of him ending his race and Kimi just pointed at the red light and walked away, hardly a dangerous, angry man. Plus he had his helmet on, "excuse me my good man but could you please get off my possibly life saving underwear before I go and risk my life at 200 miles an hour for your enjoyment" (in Finish) would hardly have done the trick would it?

yeah i said for legal reasons anger management, cause shoving some old man to the ground is a little weird, tony stewart did it a few years back and was forced to take some classes, imagine if he would of done that to someone who would of kicked his ass. believe it or not there are laws against putting ur hands on people, i personally think it was funny but at the same time shows what kind of little bitch kimi is

...and I believe their are also laws in place that prohibit people from vandalising peoples property.

Perhaps it would have been better for Kimi to sue the photographer instead of pushing him off his personal property? ;)

What has the western world spiralled into? A morass of whinging babies? :P

I would've liked to see what would happen if that whiney bitch would have stepped on some old school F1 drivers kit? This thread would be something else.

"Do you think he hit hard enough?"
"He still has some teeth left, no worries"
"What a GREAT KO!"

The photographer crossed the limit. No matter if he has been doing it for 40 years, it doesn't matter. Hell, if he'd been doing that for 1000 years and stepped on my stuff, he'd still get shoved.

The push was justified, end of story.

what exactly did he step on his ferrari umbrella he had most his gear on he step on kimis man purse kimi reacted like a child plain and simple. he is the size of a child if he would of done that shit to a real sized man he would of got layed out. imagine he shoved somebodys grandfather to the ground why are people saying he deserved it, it was reaction a weird one not good for champion his boyfriend holding the umbrella should of handled the situation not kimi. somebody puts there hands on u its free game, who knows exactly what material item he stepped on i think it could of been replaced,he pushed a old man to the ground how is that justified

If someones grandfather walked up, squatted in front of me standing on my stuff and started talking a picture, I would shove my size 12 shoe up his arse and then push his stupid self down.

The photog got what he deserved - he stepped on the kimis stuff and and got into his personal space, and got what he deserved.

I honestly think Kimi over reacted.. he should of just asked him to watch his step. If someone fell over next to you and accidently grabbed your hand as a reaction, would you shot him? No you wouldnt you would be like wtf. and then offer a hand or pull away.. You wouldnt SHOVE him to the ground.. I trhink Kimi should be penalised.

Accidently stumbling and sticking your hand out is far different from squatting in front of you on your stuff to take photos.

Well since the photographer didn't make much of it at the time to continue to take pictures makes me think it was after the fact that the photographer thought it was worth to make a fuss. To just dust off and continue taking the pictures probably means the photographer knew he made a mistake.
If i don't know you and you're stepping on my soccer bag with no intention of moving, I'm going to let you know in a way that you won't forget, and for 40 years on the job he still has something to learn...

Anyone else seen the video on YouTube where a woman with a big folio knocks a little kid down trying to get Kimi's autograph? The kid's on the ground crying and she looks ready to ignore the kid until Kimi looks back to the kid then she seems to realize, "hey maybe I better worry about my crying kid instead of harrasing a feisty Finn" Kimi just keeps walking. Ah, the price of fame.
