By "whored out" I mean, what engine block (varies in tune and accessories aside) has poliferated extensively? This was brought on by me watching the review of the MG SV, which has the 4.6 Liter V-8 from the Ford Mustang - which was used in my old Lincoln Continential. And the Holden Monaro which uses the Corvette engine. And the new Cadillac ?XR? which uses the North Star from the new bonneville and the rest of the Cadillacs. Can anyone think of any other engines that are so widely used? I'm curious.

The Chevrolet Small Block 350 is used almost everywhere. The engine has been around since 1967 and has since been produced in all forms. From cars, to boats, to most custom hot rods, to massive generators. It's such a reliable powerful engine that can be found really cheap. Carburrated, Fuel Injected, Supercharged, Turbocharged, whatever you can throw at it, it can take. It's one of the most versitile engines in the world, and it's HUGE # of sales reflect that.

I also say the ford block. Its used in the koinegsegg(spelling) the quale mangusta, invicta s1, lincoln towncar, licoln aviator, ford explorer, mercury mounteneer Plus the ones that you mentioned.
maybe not the most whored out, but at least deserves honorable mention is the Nissan VQ engine which is in the altima, maxima, 350z, murano, fx, g35 etc.

How about the cleveland 351? It's in everything from Detomaso Panteras and Mangustas to Fords from the 40's...it's all over the place. In modern terms, the 4.6 is probably one of the most widely used engines though, off the top of my head, it's used in:
Lincoln: Aviator, towncar, and the Mark VIII and Continental (out of production at the moment)
Ford: Mustang, Explorer, Crown Victoria, Expedition, F150, E150
Mercury: Grand Marquis, Marauder, Mountaineer
Qvale: Mangusta
Invicta: S1
Koenigsegg: CC, CC8S
MG: SV, ZT 260 (and above)
Detomaso: Guara
Panoz: AIV Roadster, Esperante, GTR-1
Jensen: S-V8
Marcos: Mantis, LM500
MCV: CH4
Protomotors: Spirra
Ronart: Lightning
Spectre: R42, R45

hydrogen fuel cell yes, electric will never be more then a true grass blade protectors dream. yes, GM has made a production version, but they were never practical. it makes perfect sence to use hydrogen and oxygen, together, they are quite more explosive then petrol. current fuel cell technology delivers approx 40-60% efficiancy ratings, compared to 15-25% for petrol engines.
also, solar power is only good when there is sunlight all the time, and not efficaint, about 7-12% at best. less then that when the sun isnt @ peak right assention in the sky
Gotta go with the Ford modular V8 family (sohc and dohc V8's in a variety of displacements). It is used by a wide variety of small and specialty manufacturers.
A close second might be GM's Ecotec.
Any Toyota motors make the cut?

i agree. ive seen more cars then i can remember with 350 Chevys. everything from hot rods, customs to whatever people can think of. i have to admit ive seen many a Chevy small block in Fords as well, but rarely, if ever, a Ford in a Chevy.
