View Full Version : Lewis Hamilton... Arrogant?

This is not my personal opinion - yet.
However it is being discussed around the web (itv-f1.com) and other commentary that Lewis Hamilton has developed a bit of attitude this year.
I'm finding now the more that I read his comments or in the press, I can understand why.
Perhaps it's a lack of people skills? Or just really focused on the race..
But you cannot answer people like this and expect it to be taken warmly.
Q: (Anne Giuntini - L’Equipe) Sorry to disturb you, Lewis, but is it what you call a small incident involving Kimi being a victim? Is it smaller than a mistake that would annoy only you?
LH: That’s what I just said, didn’t I?
From ITV Have you noticed a small change in Lewis Hamilton’s attitude recently? His reply when asked by Louise about his qualifying lap of "Good car, good team....(long pause and smile) great driver," is I think very telling.
James Allen: It was interesting that in Monaco he not only encouraged comparisons after the race between himself and Senna, but actually spoke of himself in comparison with Senna. .....
...I agree with Ed Gorman of The Times, that what people don’t like about Lewis is the sense of ‘entitlement’ – the notion that he was somehow born to be F1 champion, entitled to breeze straight into the best car in F1 and be praised for it. They resent that.
Many members of the public in Britain resent it too and of course the foreign media and Lewis’s rivals really resent it.Thoughts?

i really dont know what to think. Look for example at LH on top gear - very bright and charming guy. But than this and even more of ths. For ex when he was asked abut his pole in Montreal he said sth like 'great car, great driver' or this 'touched by Senna' bullshit etc.. He is great driver and he shows that he is self confident which is what a great driver have to be but than again compare his behaviour to Kubica's. How humble, level-headed but still very confident he is

Mr. Smiley face better clean up his act and smack those stars out the back of his head or else he's going to lose a hell of alot of supporters.
I just want to see the silver cars in front of those red cars . . . I think most F1 drivers have an attitude issue.

I think most F1 drivers have an attitude issue.
But that's what i think is the main appeal of Lewis Hamilton...hes a nice chap, well, supposedly at the moment. If he turns out to be a Naomi-esque diva then he loses his appeal. A great driver yes, but that would put him in the same boat as Alonso.

All I know is that compared to all the other drivers when they are on camera, Lewis doesn't act like a fucking robot when he wins races or comes up in 2nd/3rd on the podium. Kimi, Kubica, Massa, it's like they've had their balls chopped off.
The way Lewis acted when he won the Monoco grand prix is how you're supposed to act when you win an F1 race.
Had Kimi or the other's won it, they would have just gotten out of the car, walked to the podium and done a slight wave to the crowd barely smiling.
I could care less if he's showing off some of attitude to resporters. As long as he keeps exuming personality during races and racing well, I'll be satisfied.
And +1 for seeing silver on front of red. I thought the 10 position penalty is BS.

Any team run by the likes of Ron Dennis, any governing body run by the likes of Max Mosely should be shunned by anybody with any scruples.
i think that doing what he does (racing in F1) its one of those things you have to be arrogant in order to do well,

Most driver becomes cocky when they taste success. Lewis was very humble last year, then boom. After the instant success in the super fast Mclaren, out comes the cock.
Schumi was cocky during his early years, needless to say, Alonso, JV. The Finns seems to be the more humble bunch.

I think Schumacher became less arrogant after people started beating him. By the time he switched to crush mode, he was very nice off the track. Like in all sports, you have to be mean and nasty on the field, but off it, if you're still a bad character, then you're bad.
fordgt84
06-20-2008, 05:16 AM
i wouldn't say arrogant, but he can seem a bit over confident sometimes. as with the press, we all know how frustrating the press can be so it's only natural that a human being snaps once in a while, demonizing an upcoming star makes for a very good story.
he's also young and tasting great success really early, so i think it's natural that he develops a bit of an ego. but then again f1 drivers do tend to have big egos, it comes with the territory i guess.
Here's an entry from LH's diary:

"I have to apologise to the team because I didn't do a great job"
After qualifying.
* * *
I don't think so, with comments like that. He has always thank the Team and always "seem" to put team before himself.
In terms of the comment about the Great Driver, seems to be taken out of context in the sense that he could have said it half-kidding.
But yeah, personally I don't think he is arrogant yet, but I do agree with everyone that anyone like him in Formula 1, must have certain degree of ego to get there.

I think he's getting caught up in his own hype... and unfortunately as soon as he goes on a downward trend the media will undoubtably turn on him... that to me will be his real "arrogance" test. But i think he is a little concieted which is understandable his impact in F1!
But if he ever compares himself blatantly to Senna, for me he will be over the line instantly.
Think about tt... would you get cocky if you were in his shoes?
And for the record, i don't like him (my personal opinion)... i prefer the old school and honesty of Coulthard (yes i'm Scottish too).

I think you are reading this wrong. My own translation would be "Sorry, if I were to get the turn correctly, Kimi will not have the fastest time"
I mean, why on earth would you apologize to the team in public for 3rd place. You could have easily walk to the team and say, hey, I screw up the turn, sorry.

hamilton has a few words of his own
http://www.f1update.com/fullstory/view/264010/Hamilton_hits_back_at_negative_media_image/
Lewis Hamilton has dismissed suggestions that he is the latest example of a formula one driver seduced by the sport's glamorous temptations.
The McLaren driver's comments at the Magny-Cours circuit were prompted by incorrect reports that he blew $400,000 on a personalised number-plate.
Amid other reports of glitzy film premieres, awards nights and dating pop stars, 23-year-old Hamilton insists that the media has got it wrong.
"There's not really a lot I can do about it," he said.
"I'm just not into that sort of thing. I really want to enjoy it but I don't have to be walking down a red carpet. I've never wanted that sort of treatment," Hamilton is quoted as saying by British newspapers.
"I have experienced it in some places but I'm not looking for events to go to so I can be seen. I just enjoy being sat in the back like any other member of the audience. I like to meet people but then people start making stories out of it."
He also seems miffed by the intense criticism that followed his embarrassing crash in the Montreal pitlane two weeks ago.
"I can take constructive criticism, but I don't read any of it. You hear about (the media reports), but what difference should that make to me, because I am doing my job and I am enjoying myself?"
Hamilton insists that negative press reportage doesn't bother him.
He told reporters in France: "It does not affect my life in any way, shape or form. Sure, the opinion you end up giving people does affect you because at the end of the day I am not a mean guy and I am out there doing the best job that I can.
"Small mistakes happen. I am sure that everyone makes similar mistakes to those I do, but you're not in the spotlight like me.
"People try and make me something that I'm not, but the majority of the time, 99.9 per cent of the time, it's only my dad's opinion that matters."

on another not. I think his fed up with all the FIA bullshit that FIA do to him.. like the last race... getting a drive through .. that was just sick and was sooo favorable to Ferrari... also the race for 3rd spot.. McLaren getting nudged by the Toyota. .... Ferrari's exhaust hanging lose ??? why wasn't that called in to be taken care of.. im sure if i was behind that Ferrari i would back right off, cause the last thing i want is a exhaust in my forehead.! I bet if it was McLaren, they would of started a whole investigation and then stopped the race and then burnt the cars... so im fed up... just like Hamilton.
Anyways.

Spot on!
Lewis is a different matter though, I think he is getting arrogant but then he is one of the best drivers in the world so probably deserves to be arrogant.
If you want to talk about arrogant, remember Senna? He is looked upon as a God by some people (not me by the way, I thought he was the man who Schumi learnt to cheat from, which then spoiled an otherwise brilliant career). He thought he had a God given right to win (Senna, not Schumi) and would simply drive through anyone in his way (e.g. Prost).
Lewis does not seem to be like that at all. I just hope he leaves McLaren and joins Ferrari at some point! Unlikely I know, but I can dream.;-)

A lot of people in the world deserve to be arrogant. The question is, do they have to be? Is there a need for? Does it add value to what he/she is doing?
It's not about we'll ever be him, but we actually contribute to his fame by discussing him, turning on the TV, or read news on him. It is the same way you criticize a car when you test drive it. Can you build a car yourself? Without audience, he's just a racer with no value.
There are a few top drivers in the Formula one line up, each deserve to be arrogant, but for me, I would rather support the one that is not.
(I do have to say I enjoy Clarkson being so arrogant on TV, it gives value to Topgear)

Senna was he best F-1 driver of all times, hands down. :-P
But yeah, I think Lewis is not only young and inexperienced regarding his attitude towards the press but also seems to have some lack of people skills to some degree, making him come across as an a-hole/arrogant person that some people/press are trying to portray of him. All in all he just seems to be an honest guy, and speaks his mind no matter what, without thinking too much what's he's going to say. I don't personally think he is arrogant. But I do think he's got a long way to go and only life will teach him how to be a more humble and patient man.
I'm sure Lewis will get there, hopefully not by his own mistakes alone, but also by being smarter and learning from other bright drivers' mistakes as well. Well at least that is what I hope for him. He's a good chap!

Well it's BS if you don't think Lewis caused an avoidable accident in Canada. I wondered about the penalty and read the Sporting Regulations. Guess what, the penalty for causing an avoidable accident is a 10 place grid penalty at the next race.

It always baffles me how the slightest infringment by a Ferrari driver has everyone up in arms (usually with Ron 'I'm not a crook' Dennis shouting the loudest) but when its the McLarens its a different story. Could it be the Schumi effect?

Dunno if u can compare Button to Hamilton. When Button arrived he was seen as a "hopeful" by the British press for about a season - which proved fruitless. On the other hand Lewis very nearly won a title in his rookie season (hence why I said to give him some slack!). Don't get me wrong, i was ecstatic when Kimi thrashed everyone last yr by just keeping his head down and scoring points where it mattered, but that doesn;t detract from Lewis applaudable performance, its what has made F1 interesting again (together with - for me at least - the exclusion of traction control ans other minor rule changes).
Lets hope we continue to get differing characters like Kimi - Massa - Hamilton - Kubica for the sake of F1.

The difference is that Jenson Button seems to be a fairly likeable person. Lewis Hamilton is just...not.
On another note, he read a speech during the Nelson Mandela birthday concert recently. He tried to be humble and claimed he wasn't used to doing this sort of thing. Perhaps, but he did play Zeus in a Turkish play once.

I just don't understand him saying things like this.... :-(
However, the Briton told the Daily Mail newspaper on Monday that he saw little reason to seek advice from former grand prix drivers.
"I'm in a unique position," said Hamilton. "Nobody has felt exactly the same things as I've felt. The only person I really take advice from is my Dad.
"Whenever I speak to Damon or Jackie I do take what they say on board, but I'm not going to go searching them out and ask how I can be world champion. I want to do it on my own. I got to where I am on my own, with my family."
Jackie Stewart commented..
Stewart said drivers like Hamilton, with only 25 grands prix under his belt, needed to be kept calm and to think strategically.
"The discipline of not making mistakes is what wins. To finish first, first you must finish," he said.
"My record was 99 starts and 27 wins, and it wasn't that I was necessarily that fast. It was just that I thought fairly carefully about how you had to go quickly but you couldn't go over the top.
"The drivers shouldn't go over the top, even now. The over-the-top thing has probably taken the world championship lead away from Lewis Hamilton right now."

Oh god.. the amount of @#$!,If you read what he says.. He simply said he wants to win on his own merits.. He doesn't want people to say... HE won cause Schuamacher taught him or Jackie taught him.. You know how hard it is to be 2nd... seriously... any1 with a younger brother ask them how it feels to be 2nd... and same goes for Hamilton, he wants to win with his own driving ability and learn him self.. Advice from his father so what. im 28 and i ask advice off my mother about my money ... yea i could go ask a banker but its not his money at the end of the day if i lose my money I lose it not him, so i understand why he listens and trusts his father. i mean at the end of the day it's him and the car, he has to use his own instincts, and apply the advice when HE feels necessary...no use living on the words of others, u must be able to make your own decisions and live with your mistakes... it's perfectly understandable that he listens to his father, he's the one who's had his back from day one, what have damon hill and jackie stewart done for him?

Performing at elite level is not just physical ability - it is as much a mental battle.
This is where coaching could make the difference.
Mark Hughes hits the mark in this (http://www.itv-f1.com/Feature.aspx?Type=Mark_Hughes&id=43176)article..
An extract: His talent is such that he’s quite capable of delivering devastating performances despite this. But until he’s come to terms with his fame, and stopped worrying about how a media he doesn’t understand is going about its job, there will be inconsistencies in his performances.
This isn’t intended to be ‘nasty’. It’s just the reporting of how things are.

Some funny comments made :-)
From ITV-f1.com
Dad pulls Lewis out of Button triathlon.
Lewis Hamilton’s father Anthony has put a stop to his son’s plans of competing against Jenson Button in a charity triathlon.
Hamilton accepted his fellow British driver’s challenge to compete in a swim-bike-run event later this month in Thursday’s press conference at Silverstone, after claiming he was fitter than Button earlier this week.
In a lively press conference ahead of their home race, the McLaren and Honda drivers got involved in an entertaining exchange that resulted in Hamilton eventually accepting the challenge after regular triathlon runner Button offered to give money to charity if he lost.
“What if I say £10,000 to the charity of your choice if you beat me? What do you think?” Jenson asked.
“Are you trying to steer me off this championship or what?” Lewis replied.
Button then countered: “It’s the only thing I can be competitive in at the moment. Think about it.”
Then asking further pressing on whether the event would take place by the assembled reporters, Hamilton eventually agreed: “The biggest incentive is, if I do beat you, then you’ve got some money for a charity which is great. However, you do have an advantage as you’ve already done one, and I already know that by doing one you’re better the next time. But man, I’m up for it, I’m up for it.
He then added: “OK, let’s do it. It’s a date.”
However what would likely have been a much-hyped ‘F1 Battle of Britain’ has now been scrapped after Lewis’s father and manager Anthony pulled his son out of the planned event.
"Lewis accepted the challenge like the good sport he is and in the spirit with which he accepts things,” Hamilton senior said in a statement.
“But unfortunately for Lewis, we are withdrawing him from this.
“We are in the middle of a championship and that is the focus of our attention."
The third British driver in the press conference, David Coulthard had already ruled himself out of going up against his two younger compatriots, with the Scot, heading for retirement at the end of the season, saying at 37 he was too old.
He did however offer to carry the water bottles.

what he has done so far in his career scares some people he reminds me of the drivers of the 60s and 70s rock stars showing up to red carpet events expressing himself he has already proved his greatness behind the wheel i just wonder how many complaints there would be if he was behind the wheel of a certain ARROGANT HORSE there are so many ferrari fans that got use shumi winning anything and everything that if anybody else wins they try to find anything to complain about. dont get me wrong i love ferrari i love racing and i love competetive racing just that alot of ferrari fans are arrogant and ignorant towards anybody else winning in f1

Lewis didn't kamikaze into a stationary car, or clip a wall for once? Is that what you mean? Seriously though, I'm stoked for him to win in front of a home crowd, that's great! Good to see his fan-boy club resurgence as well;-)

Made some fair points though. I'd agree that Schumacher himself was quite arrogant on the track and a lot of his fans were too. However, he seemed like a nice guy off the track. I disagree though, that Hamilton has 'proved his greatness'. He's good, but not good enough to act like he's the best, because he ain't.

a year and a half into his career who has done more with that time. he is one of those greats that come through racing only once in a while. people cant see that yet and have to wait until his career is over before they realize how amazing some of these drives have been in his rookie and sophmore years.

Arrogant and skills doesn't need to come hand in hand. That's all that we are saying. I don't think anyone here is denying his achievements regardless of how good the Mclaren is in recent years (from how well he fend off his teammates).
Y compare him with F1 Legends when he's still only a rookie. Yes, he has broken a few records. Nonetheless, he's still no WDC yet, nevermind several WDCs to whom he is compared to. Button has been enjoying relatively successful early years, look where he is now.
I never able to understand Pokiou, we are discussing arrogance, and have no clue how winning the British GP will prove anyone wrong regarding that.

^Another fair point. I enjoy watching F1 and Hamilton is a part of that because he is good, but I still don't have to like the guy. I still think he's aloof.

Damn right I am enjoying F1 right now. ;-)
But what's the fun if everything is what it is? Why do you think people even buy magazines or surf the web to read about the private life of celebrities if all we should care is how they act/sing/write... ? It's part of our life, topics we talk with a beer on our hands. Chit chats.
It's not like we are losing sleep over things like this, but this is stuff we debate on a forum.

ya know, I'm of the opinion that Hamilton is a super nice guy! Seeing him on Top Gear and listening to him speak on BBC before the F1 races gave me a new respect for him as compared to last year when I knew nothing about him and just watched him race. I don't know much about the quote about comparing himself to Senna, but I look at it this way. The media is ALWAYS going to make a big deal out of mistakes and goof ups. So maybe he mis-spoke or got a little over excited and said something he shouldn't have. But 9 out of 10 times, he's speaking like a humble, mature, F1 driver. He's not bad mouthing other drivers or intentionally causing problems for other drivers. I don't like McLaren, but I have the utmost respect for LH. He shows a lot more emotion than Kimi and I appreciate that too. Gives you something to connect with, and feel closer to the sport.

yes he is arrogant, he has been silver spoon fed to believe he is the best thing since slice bread - unfortunately they didnt give him any training on how to be humble and respectfull.

do you know why he can be arrogant.. CAUSE HE CAN... he is by far one of the BEST drivers out there. That's no excuse. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. Besides, he's an ambassador for his team and the sport, so he actually can't act like a dickhead in front of the media.

i don't think hammilton is a good driver, because he start at F1 racing in a good tean and he's lucky in the races. He can't compare himself to Senna, he's starting the carrer yet and he's not even won a champioship.
I preffer much more Felipe Massa, he always trying to do he's best in the race.

The best is just not cutting it.. he fails over and over again.. Massa is a Failed F1 pilot..
Hamilton can compare him self to who ever he wants... Nigel Mansel the Stig even I don’t care.. He can cause that’s what his aiming for... One day there is going to be another racer out there that’s going to say i want to be like Hamilton.
So Sanj, your point here is irrelevant.
Its called comparison and idolising.

I agree he is very arrogant also rather a big headed bragger on a certain website he claims he is better than Michael Schumacher and over take Michael achievements and titles, he should be so lucky he never will, he has a great deal to learn, he will never be like Michael. I agree with Michael that Lewis has to learn to be more patient since that incident in Canada:thumbup:he should check the pit lane lights and stop boasting too much, Lewis was invited to race with Schumi at The Race of Champions instead of Jenson Button, they asked him why didnt you go, he says he was afraid of Michael beating him. well this shows you Lewis hasnt got what it takes.:laugh:silly lad, its time he grew up and face it that he isnt as clever as he makes out to be.
