does anyone know how to edit a song to take out a vocal track???
the song i want to do this to is

take out an entire vocal track and leave just the background music? you can't do that as songs are compiled in layers and then rendered to be just one piece of sound. to remove a whole vocal piece and leave the rest requires you to be able to manipulate layers, which you don't

but if you're brave/creative and are willing to waste time i suggest downloading Cool Edit Pro, it's the best free audio editing program that i know of

Actually, there're some vocal removal filters out there. Most of them remove the sound in the "centre" soundstage. If you've heard 5.1 tracks, you know how vocal is usually coming from the centre channel. That's how the filters work. For certain songs, they work reasonably well but for other ones, they do nothing but to mess up the audio.

The easiest way is probably to find the karaoke track for the song ;)

Cool Edit Pro is far from free I'm afraid. Great tool though.

It is really impossible to take out just the vocals on anything, or any other instruments for that matter. What you can do though, is remove certain frequencies, but that would cut into all of the mix. Basically your best bet would be to contact the record label and find out if they have all of the tracks separated and can send them to you. But also, this will require the record label's and artists' permission to use the song on how you wish.

Easiest solution: remake the song yourself.

There used to be a free version of Cool Edit.
Try http://www.analogx.com/ he has a WinAmp plug-in that lowers the volume of the vocal frequency range. You can use WinAmps "wav out" to record the changed file.
