April 21, 2008 Quantum leap

Q would not be impressed.
A stunt driver (or a delivery driver, depending on which source you read) tasked with driving an Aston Martin DBS to the set of the latest Bond film, Quantum of Solace, has lost control in heavy rain and sent the car into Lake Garda.
The DBS ploughed through the barrier before coming to rest 50 foot below the surface, getting mangled up something proper along the way. A crane was brought to fish it out - and as you can see from the pictures, the DBS took to water like, erm, a duck to a deep fat fryer.
If it was Roger Moore's submersible Esprit, of course - or the Rinspeed sQuba (http://www.topgear.com/content/news/stories/2618/) - things would have been different.
To make matters conveniently worse, Bond producers say they have no back-up DBSs. Still, it's good publicity for the film. The sort of publicity you just can't buy...

Unless you buy a DBS and drive it into a lake.

That is a lie!

As you can see, they have at least 2 back ups... right. there.

Unless they trashed those too. ;-)

...And yes, I wept when I heard the news. :-(

What they probably mean is they don't have backups for the backups.

apparently the guard rail pierced the roof of the car and only just missed the driver by a coupel of cm... what a lucky SOB. i can hardly believe he survived that when looking at that roof. probably driving way too fast.

No solace for Bond stuntmen after second crash

The shooting of the latest James Bond film Quantum of Solace is proving dangerous for stuntmen after a second crash Wednesday in just five days left one daredevil in intensive care.

The accident happened when the car used by two stuntmen rammed into a filming lorry and then into a wall on set near the picturesque Lake Garda in northern Italy, ANSA news agency reported.
One of the two men, a Greek national, ended up in intensive care in a hospital in the nearby town of Verona.
This was not the first accident to befall the crew in recent days after a Bond stunt driver crashed 007's famous Aston Martin DBS into Lake Garda ahead of filming on Saturday.
The unnamed driver was taking the car on to the set when he lost control of the vehicle for reasons yet to be established and plunged into the lake.
Sky Italia TV pictures later showed the car being winched back on to dry land, with ANSA reporting that the stuntman — quickly rescued by firemen — escaped with only minor bruising.
A source said the car was the only one available for shooting, which has so far seen the crew move from England to Panama, Chile and Mexico. A further location trip to Spain is planned.
Quantum of Solace, the second Bond film to feature 40-year-old British actor Daniel Craig as the suave secret agent is set to be released later this year. The film picks up where the last instalment "Casino Royale" left off.

How did this happen? Aston Martin should've provided their own drivers.

hehe I saw a DBS yesterday at the local aston dealer and talked to the guy who was driving it in. He told me it has a really comfortable ride but stiffens up nicely when you push it around, looked pretty good too.
