I love this commercial. i saw it the other day.
WHy woudl they need to use six engines?
Are they stupid?
Surely just disassembling one would be enough?
And its nto like they filmed the real engine really operating, it was all hand cranked and faked anyway :P ;)
Impressive in a corny sort of way - it would have been MUCH mor eimpressive if they had actually filmed a live operating engine at real time - not the "scene by scene" that they did.

That would've resulted in loss of six cameras instead of engines.

No kidding ;)
I like their "modle" of flame travel... considering that combustion begins at TDC (or there abouts..) yet in the "BMW Parallel Universe" flame travel/combustion begins at BDC... when the cylinder is all void of piston ;) :P hehe

cool commercial, a little short for the amount of carnage involved.

Haterade? Fuck that - they just like to say "we trashed 6 engines for the add..." and fo rthat much carnage, you woul dthink they cold have done better.. I bet if Honda tried this for an ad they would get it right - first time ;)

Honda uses BMW as an engine reference. Not the other away around...

Wow - this is a killer ad! Love it.
Not visually catching if you as me!
They over did it to the point where it looks to good to be real, which in the end defeats the purpose.
But I guess BMW has money to spare, especially when it comes to their M division cars. Just look at the Russian add!

Not for visually creative adverts they don't - and I dont recall my comment saying anything about BMW using Honda as an "engine reference" so why even bring it up?

CGI is always the way to go, it's cheaper, the physics of the explosion will be more accurate ..... I think the making of the commercial is really the commercial.
It's a fun ad to watch, but I have my issues with it.
The explosion was idealized for the sake of being more artistic. Being able to see so much of the cylinder bore when the explosion was starting bothered me. (As RC mentioned, since when did combustion start at BDC?)
When I first heard about this ad, I was hoping they'd be finding ways to jam tiny camera's into a (mostly) working engine but instead it was all cutaway work (which is sort of ok for the injection sequence.) I can understand not showing the exhaust stroke after the climactic combustion scene, but why no compression stroke?

There's no piston in the cylinder...
Surely just disassembling one would be enough?
You'd think so when all they showed was one cylinder. It doesnt seem like they'd need six. Since each comes with 8 cylinders, that's total of 48 cylinders that could've been used for the ad. :?:
There's no piston in the cylinder...
That's the most disturbing part. Actually though, in the very last scene, they show the piston being depressed.
