Sorry once again for the lack of updates, but I promise this will make up for it!
The shop were I work at, as most of you know by my other threads, is predominately a muscle car shop. However, we had been servicing a European or Italian car every once and a while, and had the chance to meet many interesting people. Several months ago, we were given the opportunity to be the mechanic crew for a vintage car rally. We accepted without knowing what we got ourselves into!
The Copperstate 1000 is a open road rally, that is open to select pre-1973 cars that are chosen by the Copperstate committee and the Phoenix Mens Art Council. This was the 18th Year. This year's route took us over four days to complete, with stops at the Pima Air Museum, Bondurant Race Track, Overnight in a remote town called Greer, and two nights in the JW Marriott in Tucson. We drove on many challenging and scenic routes, including the Coronado Trail, and a run up and down Mount Limmon. Four days, three nights, one thousand miles, and eighty two of the finest cars every to roam the road.
We quickly established ourselves as the best mechanic crew to ever participate, with the lowest number of downed cars in years. We were able to repair many cars that would normally be sent home. We solved a no oil pressure problem on a Alfa 6C 2500, failing brakes on 2 Maseratis, and a Mercedes. Various tune ups, altitude adjustments, and fuel issues were also solved. We were waking up at 5am, repairing cars till they left, then following the pack. We would generally work till midnight to makes sure all the cars were safe, and in good working order. The owner of U-Haul corporation personally supplied us with two new F250 vans to haul our tools and parts in. The limits, much to Stuart's amusement, were tested thoroughly! I was driving one van, with my friend/co-worker Kyle navigating, and the other van was driven by the shop owner, Mark. The limiters on the vans were 90mph (which was reached often) and the tires look like they had done 100 laps at silverstone by the time we were done! CarQuest graciously donated a drive on lift for the first day, so we could do tech inspections, and it turned out was very handy for a few brake issues, and the Alfa, On that note, if you are in the states, and need car parts, I highly suggest you check out your local Carquest store.
The cars were the stars, however we met and made friends, and even picked up some customers along the way. The common reaction to who was attending the rally would be that they were a bunch of snobbish, high maintainance millionaires, but you would be totally wrong. They were great! The nicest people I have ever met, not a single person was the stereotype. They were more than happy to give us rides, talk to us, and tell us how much we were appreciated. I have never met a more outstanding group of people. Their hospitality and willingness to allow three stinky, greasy, and wore out mechanics to attend their suit and tie dinners and parties was amazing. We were told we HAD to attend , and they did not care what we looked like because we were heroes. It was fantastic. We also received the "Good Samaritan" trophy, which was a first for a mechanic crew at the event.
This was by far the most amazing event I have ever participated in. The sight of these works of art in motion (more often than not, extreme motion) was overwhelming. Couple that with the owners, and it was a very emotional event, and I cannot wait till we do it again next year! On the list of things I have done in my life, this is by far the biggest, and most proud.
