And what will Kovalainen get? I know Hamilton has been in McLaren for years but could this be considered fair? Great way to motivate anyway!

Lewis Hamilton has been promised a $4 million McLaren supercar for free - if he wins the world titles this year.

The 23-year-old British driver told The Sun newspaper that he first clapped eyes on the ultra-rare McLaren LM in the team's F1 factory ten years ago.

"When I first went to McLaren it was there and I fell in love with it," he said of the orange LM, one of only five such cars in the world.

Dennis, 60, says Hamilton can have the car if he wins the 2008 title, and McLaren is crowned constructors' champion.

"Fortunately, our deal gives me a bit of time to save up!" Dennis joked.

Hamilton currently leads the drivers' title from Kimi Raikkonen by three points, while McLaren sits five points ahead of BMW Sauber in the teams' standings.

Painted in papaya orange in honour of the founder, Bruce McLaren, the McLaren F1 LM is only one of five in existence. Lightened by some 80 kg over the standard F1 and rumoured to produce approximately 680hp from its derestricted 6.1L BMW sourced V12 engine the LM can accelerate to 60mph in just 2.9 seconds and go on to a top speed well over 200mph.

I heard Ferrari promised Massa this beautiful and rare Toyota Prius Touring Edition (specially painted in Scuderia colours) if he won't spin anymore up to the end of the season.

"Yeah, and if he suddenly wins the championship, he can have ten of those!!" added Jean Todt.

As if you need some extra motivation for trying to become F1 world champion. Awesome car nevertheless.

The story's wrong. Ron Dennis will give up his F1 if Hamilton wins both the 2008 and 2009 championships.

I thought Hamilton's contract only allows him to drive Mercedes products, I guess he'll have to keep it in his garage until he signs for Ferrari :-P

I guess it's up to Kovalainen to win the Championship and steal it now, then. ;-)

How is papaya orange in honour of Bruce McLaren? :?:

If anything I would've thought it would be black.

Ahhh ok, actually no. I was just thinking that as a Kiwi (New Zealander) the colour would be black.

Bruce Mclaren was a Kiwi? :?:

^Yeah, but we should claim him as an Australian. After all, New Zealand always had and still has the option of joining us. :P

Yep, 100% Kiwi born and bred. Actually [pointless name-drop alert] a good friend of mines brother is married to his grandaughter [end of pointless name-drop alert]

Yeah, but we should claim him as an Australian

Ok you can have him on the condition that you keep Russel Crowe, give back pavalova, Phar Lap, Crowded House, and stop claiming Sam Neil. ;-)

Pavlova was invented in Australia and we'll never give it up! Crowded House was actually formed in Australia, though the Finn brothers are from NZ. Phar Lap never raced in NZ, so its racing success is purely based on the efforts of Australian race horse trainers and associates. Sam Neill, well, he has lost all semblance of any nationality, but he lives in Sydney, so clearly he prefers us. :)

Anyway, back to the original point, what on earth would Lewis Hamilton do with a rare collector's car? You just don't drive these cars unless on a track, and you would think Hamilton has a life and doesn't stay on the track during his spare time.

I'm happy to give you back Sam Neil! His annoying steak ad's arn't much of a contribution to anything great :-)
