No it's not..

Power to weight, torque available through more of the rev range, looks like am M5 beater to me, as well as an RS6 potential beater, and E63 AMG beater to me.

Not to mention, the interior is on par with a standard 5er and close to the merc E series to boot ;)

or are you just trolling?

Absolutely. The CTS-V puts out more power and more torque per pound than any of its competitors. And it'll fly past all those German supersedans when they get bogged down by the stupid 155mph speed limiter. ;-)

You must be the only one who thinks a Caddy "is on part with" germans sedan. No doubt it has got the same amount of power as the german supersedans but there is a reason why they cost more.

No he is not the only one, and neither are the thousands of people around the world who buy them.

And the reason they cost more? Maybe its because people are willing to pay more because they dont know any better? :)

Not only will it fly past them, it will beat them to 155 mph as well :-D

the term is "On par with" ;)

Actually, Cadillac have one-upped the Germans, not only in styling, but in engineering as well with the new Cadillac CTS.... and the V is a HUGE leap forward.

As you can tell, I'm not the only one who "thinks" this.... let the numbers, and the reviews do the talking, not some internet hero's who hate American cars.

Numbers by the book, source: Autotrader.com:

2008 E63 AMG
Power: 507 hp @ 6800 rpm
Torque: 465 ft-lbs @ 5200 rpm
weight: 4035 lbs
lb/ hp : 7.96
Transmission: Automatic

2008 BMW M5
Power: 500 hp @ 7750 rpm
Torque: 383 ft-lbs @ 6100 rpm
Weight: 4012 lbs
lb/ hp : 8.02
Transmission: Sequential flappy paddle

2009 Cadillac CTS-V
Power: 550 HP
Torque: 550
Weight: 4200 lbs
lb/hp : 7.64
transmission: 6 speed 6060 manual, or an optional automatic for poseurs ;)

Have you ever thought that BMW would ever consider lowering its price? :-P
Besides, they can always find excuses for stacking up prices. Developing an engine singularly designed for one model, not making enough of them, "brand" pricing, etc...

I'm sure that Cadillac could raise the price on the CTS-V, but... you know what? We don't know how much Cadillac's going to charge for the new CTS-V.

2008 E63 AMG
hp/ lb : 7.96

2008 BMW M5
hp/ lb : 8.02

2009 Cadillac CTS-V
hp/lb : 7.64

Urm, Nth? You got that hp/lb backwards, man. It should be lb/hp. So it means the CTS-V has the least to lug around! ;-)

Oh, and BMW M5
lb/hp (2): 10.03 (most of the time)

BMW M5 : $82,900 MSRP

so why all the hate then? or are you here just to stir the pot?

You get me all wrong. I'm not a hater. I just don't think this car will blow the competiton off the road performancewise or in the quality department. From what I've read the new CTS has come along way with interior quality but is still far behind the european competitors. Will propably be very good bang for buck but unfortunately it won't sell well in europe since people are prepared to pay extra for what they consider to be higher quality.

I actually agree with Ghostbat there, as it's a cultural dynamic.... there is a reason why Asians are 9 out of 10 times more likely to buy a car that is made in the Pacific... a cultural thing.

This is one thing why so many Americans buy such a wide variety of cars... such varried tastes, and perhaps..... just perhaps... less biased opinions. What does this mean? I ~think~ that Americans buy cars based on how they are more then how they are precieved. Not 100%.... but more then our Pacific, and Atlantic compadre's ....

Well I did quote YOU.. ;-)

Ok GM makes excellent cars that sells very well around the world and they can charge more for them but they don't

Personally I'll wait for a test to see if it blows the german supersedans off the road.

It should be pretty apparent that the new CTS-V will walk past bimmers without too much trouble in a straight line. I'll let the car magazines sort out the subjective nonsense to try to justify the German premium. At least BMW is better than Porsche when it comes to arbitrary high prices.

The current M5 rushes to 60 in what, 4.5 seconds? I think the Caddy will be a bit closer to 4.

with a 1/4 mile time of 12.0-12.2 .... on the right strip, in the right conditions, i wouldn't be surprised to hear of mid-high 11's.....

As someone quite sick of the "perception gap," I've got to disagree. People's opinions, when based on actual performance, are often 5 or so years out of date they're based on their last car. I'm tired of people comparing their modern Cam/cord to their old mid 90's Ford/GM-badgemobile. So many people that I talk to who are car shopping just mention things like "superior Japanese build quality." I've ridden in these cars. Comparing them to my certainly out of date '88 Oldsmobile, I am not impressed.

While an '03 Malibu isn't much to write home about, the ridiculous success of the Accord and Camry makes me wary of the car buying public.

i like the fact that u can choose which gearbox u want, rather than being forced with an automatic or a sequential gearbox (BMW,Audi and Mercedes should take note) ... u got that brutal engine, styling's great, and the interior is almost sexy.

note how the video says 550+hp ... 570 - 580 maybe

On second thoughts - why would I want to pay $65,000+ when there are perfectly good low mileage 2004 CTS-V's approaching $30,000 - and high mileage units for under $24,000.

One of those with the addition of a ProCharger will net about 540bhp for under $33,000 total ;)

Well, the new car may not depreciate as much as fast - especially since its starting price is going to be close to $20,000 more.

Plus, the new car sll have "new rules".

GM is now voiding warranties of cars with altered ECU's, the cars keep track of a lot more data, OnStar will soon start emailing you speeding tickets.. the Dems ar eabout the take over.. blah... and by 2011 the 2004 CTS-V's will be $17,000 ;)

Well this CTS-V features the world's fastest-reacting suspension technology, Magnetic Ride Control (MRC). It uses shocks controlled by electro-magnets, rather than mechanical valves, greatly accelerating response time. Electronic sensors at all four wheels literally "read the road" every millisecond, making constant adjustments to damping to create virtually instantaneous and extremely precise control of body motions. This is of particular benefit for a high-performance sedan, helping to keep the car very composed during hard cornering, acceleration, braking and other dynamic maneuvers.
Besides It has increased nearly 35 percent for the '09 CTS-V, via a new 6.2L LSA supercharged V-8 engine generating an estimated 550 bhp and 550 lb-ft of torque. The engine delivers this power with remarkable refinement. A sixth-generation Eaton supercharger minimizes the added noise previously associated with supercharged engines, and tightly controls intake air temperature for optimal performance.

I am sick and tired of all these electro gadgets.. they are great - fantastic, but have issues and fail and have problems. And when they do, the fall back to "limp home" mode.

With an ABS control unit costing $3000 to $5000 depending on the car, can you imagine the cost of getting your startrek suspension repaired 6 hears later.. you kow, after your warranty is over?

Sadly the moder eletroics and especially software driven systems are not as robustly built and engineered as the electromechanical stuff of a few year ago.

I will watch from the side lines, but not get a newer performance car. :)

Econobox or slow family hauler sure, but nothing high performance.
