Local news this time

ANAHEIM - A man who says he was robbed at gunpoint minutes later ran over the suspect with his pickup.

The incident started around 2:30 this afternoon on the corner of Beach Boulevard and Orange Avenue. The victim, a 27-year-old man, had pulled over to find directions when he said two men approached him and began assaulting him through the truck window – holding him at gunpoint with an automatic handgun as they took his wallet, cell phone and other personal items, said Anaheim police spokesman Rick Martinez.

The men escaped in a taxi – the victim told police he did not believe they hijacked the cab – and the victim followed while dialing police on his OnStar navigation system. Police cruisers arrived in the Lincoln Avenue area looking for the cab in accordance with the victim's directions over the navigation system's cellular phone component, Martinez said.

At the 8700 block of Stanton Avenue, near Knott's Berry Farm, police saw the two men get out of the cab and begin walking south on the east sidewalk of the street. Fearing the suspects were armed, the officers drew their guns and ordered the men to halt.

Instead of surrendering, the suspects started to walk faster, a police official said. One suspect darted across the street into the northbound lane, unaware the victim was still looking for the men who robbed him. The victim was approaching in his truck as the suspect darted into the street. The driver was unable to stop in time and hit the suspect, causing the suspect's gun to fly from his waistband into the street upon impact.

As the man who initially bolted from police was lying on the asphalt with what police say are minor injuries, officers took the other into custody without incident.

The both suspects were arrested on suspicion of robbery, but the injured one was transported to a hospital, while the other was taken to the Anaheim city jail, Martinez said.
