I really like this car, but the price is fairly steep. The free maintenance thing should help, but options cost so much on BMWs.

128i MSRP $29,375
135i MSRP $35,675

Just as a comparison
328i $36,075


I guess the only car would ever be considered a "rival" would be the Audi A3, which is only offered in the Sportback form in the US.

A3 2.0T $26,705
A3 3.2 Quattro $35,690

My question is, how much is BMW willing to charge for a tii version? ;-)

Maxxed out is $52k. That is waaaaay too much money for a 1er.

It's not that surprising. Have you tried to max out a Mini? $45,000. And that wasn't even the convertible.
