View Full Version : Evo IX rear brakes - handbrake?

Sorry for the quick one - but does anyone know if the Evo IX is running a mechanical handbrake or a hydraulic one?

If it is mechanical - do the rear Brembo brakes do the job, or is the handbrake in the hub?

Well, to answer my own question - it looks like the Brembos on the rear do not have a handbrake.

The handbrake is housed inside the rear hubs - could make my rear conversion 'interesting'

The silver ones would be a one stop solution for the front - I could always get the rear ones at a later date - getting around the handbrake in the rear hub/disc could be a bit of a headache and not something I can solve in the next few days.....

all the cars with the brembos have internal drums even the STi's Nissans and Acuras.

I think Ferrari use the slave handbrake caliper like this:

Ok, decisions - I think I am going to go for the Focus RS brakes for now (on the Front). The rears will get done, but I need to put a bit of thought into it. I will have to transplant the rear hubs from an Evo / Porsche e.t.c and then re-drill the stud pattern to suit.

As all the cars I can think of with rear Brembos are either AWD or RWD, there may be an issue with the bearings - I may have to get a dummy rear drive shaft made for the bearing to sit properly e.t.c

I could go down the slave handbrake route - however, the calipers are £200 a side and I would still have to mock up a mounting system.

I could go fully hydraulic, but then the car would fail an MOT!

So - I am not going to rush the rear conversion and will do a bit more research!

This pic might make it clearer:

The Focus RS rear set up is not Brembo or I would certainly be doing that.

I am after a balanced braking system - the 2 pot Brembos are not overly strong. There are two reasons why I am going down the Brembo route:

1) Personal satisfaction - there are very very few cars which have had a full, front and rear Brembo conversion. I know why - it is a head fuck! However, people who have come across this problem will appreciate the work that went into fitting them - even if they don't think it was worth it!

2) A bit of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder! I can't stand un-matching brakes! If I am really honest, this is one of the very few cosmetic over performance decisions I have made on the car. It is also why I have one Euro spec rear light - the lights are symmetrical! (one reverse light on either side instead of one reverse and one fog)

Mad? Probably

Brembo - you are 100% correct on the 'slave' caliper. I have looked into the Wilwood solutions and they look viable. There is a chance that I go down the Focus RS rear brake set up to save my poor fingers and brain! However, the first step has been taken - I now own these:

for my current project I've gone with Wilwood Superlite 4 pot at the front and Wilwood Powerlite Handbrake 4 pot at the rear

lot of good info to help decide what parts are right for you, and how to size caliper pistons / discs / master cylinders to get the correct bias, can be found here http://www.stoptech.com/tech_info/tech_white_papers.shtml

uh well..

its italian, its RWD, and it has a V6 which is about to get a supercharger

I'm still at the 'buying bits' part though so there isn't anything to really show yet

I think what I have to add has already pretty much been said. You can pick up the slave E-brake kit separate from a caliper kit. Wilwood has been mentioned, which would likely be most economical, but Brembo makes them as well, I would think.

Like Brembo said, the rears only make up a fraction of braking power. If you want balance, then pick up an adjustable proportioning valve for adjustment. But it sounds like you're more into going after the challenge of doing a matching rear kit, which I think is great too. Rather than dick with hubs, etc., I'd go slave e-brake, custom bracket and a custom hat, and source an off the shelf rotor ring somewhere. So you don't have to drill each time you do the brakes. Although that won't be often.

Good luck with the project!

I am definitely going down the slave rear caliper route - I just had to explore all my options.

The front Brakes arrived at the weekend - they are fooking massive:

haha I know - I have to admit, they are larger than expected. A quick measure suggests they will just fit under current wheels, however the balance weights will have to be re-located.

Despite appearances, the Brembos are only a few mm wider than the standard FRP brakes:
