Might buy one ... The price is nice

All the E34's are in rough shape around here :(

Only, the tranny drives in "snow" ... e32's are notorious for their tranny problems though. Still big ball'n though. Everything else is in nice order.

286 hp ... sounds nice to me.

Anyone have any horror stories or thoughts??

740iL.. that's one big ass car.. and with an older engine, I can't imagine it would be that fun to drive even with 286hp when new.

Have you looked at any Bimmers in the US? I'm sure it would be worth the hassle of taking the trip.

My mom has a '89 or '90 735i. It has over 210,000 miles and the tranny seem fine. Of course fine as it in, it works, it is a big nice cruiser. But don't expect any performance out of it.

But when you are talking about inside room, it actually isn't that much bigger than a E60 5er. Outside it is definitely longer and wider.

I would still go with a 540i Sport. :D

Where do you live by the way? Which country?

here;s the think about the v8's - nikisil=problem ... where's zrfk?

I want a crusiser - w/ potential for those occasional back-road blasts ... but in reality - it's mostly gonna be long cruises and 40 kmph traffic blunders

I'm not going to the states ... if an e34 or e36 turns up i'll be taking a look having driven an e36 m3 ... good god what a great car - just overpriced

Niksil problem over rated. If there was a problem it would've been taken care of by now. Or it would've blown up.

I have an E36 M3, but I have to admit compared to the E34, the E34 is much better cruiser. And with the right suspension, it can be pretty tossable too.

With that said, I would not give up my E36 for an E34. :D

The main culprits of the original NikaSil engine breakdown have been swapped and sent back to Deutscheland. There was a problem with the cylinder walls breaking down in the V8's. A problem they didn't have in the M70 when they first tried it there. The reason for this is not really known, however there has been much speculation that US fuel quality was to blame for the acceleration of the issue.

Once in a great while (read less common than Haley's Comet) we encounter a 530 that was garaged and only let out to play on sunny days in bad climates. The best thing to do if you are that concerned about it, is take the car to the dealer before you buy it, and ask them to check the casting numbers on the block. I doubt you will encounter an engine that needs to be changed.

The main problem that arises when the V8's begin running rough is the intake manifold gaskets. Faults will be thrown for both oxygen sensors reading too lean because of unmetered air getting into the engine and the engine control unit not being able to dump enough fuel in to compensate. This will require the removal of the intake manifold and replacing the intake port gaskets, throttle body gasket and end plate gasket. Most techs will also quote you a valley pan gasket since those leak coolant like a GM leaks oil (this carried over to the M62 and M62TU).

The trannies on those cars aren't that bad either. IMO they're better than the new ones.

Nice cars, but you'll be in a world of hurt if something serious breaks. At work, we call BMW's, Bring Money With.

Actually in comparison to the two other German brands I think BMW is the most reliable and the most fun to drive. It is definitely no a Civic where you can put gas and go. It does require some care and preventive maintenance.

But my experiences has been overwhelmingly positive [knock on wood], so far. Unlike my brother's Audi which seems have problems more often than I change my underwear. (Don't ask me how often I change my underwear  .)

MB uses to be really good to back in the days, but since the merger with Chrysler they have gone down hill, and just recently now started to come back strong.

In terms of overall quality, I have to say that the E36 isn't exactly the best generation for BMW. In fact if you ask most people the E36 is when BMW learn how to cut corners and go cheaper. Which you can see in terms of quality and material. At similar mileage, a E30 is a much better built car overall. The E34 is okay, the E32 definitely good work.

In which case, I say 666Fast is right, the E32 has A LOT of sensor problems. Probably just because it was before it's time. And when all those sensors fail. . . be prepare to spend money to sort it out and diagnose, etc.
