We've got a 20th anniversary GTI 1.8t. like Brembo said try welding the whole thing or replacing it, it could also be the hangers causing vibration (not as likely though). Never had that problem when it had the stock exhaust although it wasn't more than a month old.

Yeah there are so many things that could be. Go to a good exhaust shop and have them lift the car and see if it does it there at idle. Most likely you will see where the thing is making contact with the heatshields (probably).

If you have an after market (i.e. larger diameter exhaust), and/or you have lowered your car, a common problem is that the exhaust contacts the transverse member of the rear suspension, because the axle pivot is offset from this member. Every time the rear suspension is compressed, the distance between the top of the transverse member and the under side of the car is decreased. Obviously, a larger exhaust takes up more space, and a lowered suspension gives you less space here as well.

If this describes your problem, the only things that I can suggest is to bias the position of the pipe as close to the underside as possible, or crimp the pipe locally (this kinda defeats the point of the larger exhaust though).
