Gordon Murray, designer of the McLaren F1 and the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren decided to go small and is now working on a revolutionary small car.

"I’ve been thinking about doing a really clever and different small car for the best part of the 12 years since we finished the F1, and now we’ve put together a team to do it," says Murray.

The model is known as the Type 25 (is the 25th Murray design) and will have the same size as the Smart models, but will be more compact in all dimensions.

Murray will keep details—engine, suspension and steering designs—secret until closer to production, which is at least five years away. But key targets are good handling and refinement, low fuel consumption, light weight, innovative body architecture and adaptable body design.

Murray plans up to 14 body variants. The interior will be more flexible than the Smart ForTwo, with seating for more than two. One interior, for example, would seat one adult and two children in their own seats.

A larger model is planned for the U.S. market, along with a car for emerging markets that will feature a different engine from that planned for Europe and the states.

Smart like car with the driver in the center and 2 passenger seats pushed back a little to the sides (like the F1) would be a great idea..
