View Full Version : Does anyone else get nervous taking their car to a dealer?

Even if it's just for an oil change, It's a nerve-wrecking experience for me. I've heard so many horror stories about dealers. I drive a nice (and fast) car, and when I see all the young kids that work there, I just don't trust them as a whole. As a result I try not to let the car leave my sight at the dealer. Does anyone else go through these emotions? Do any of you have other bad experiences at dealers?

The only bad experience at a Dealership is the cost. Since I know the owner where we get our Ford's I don't worry about anything. And I don't worry since I only take a car to a dealer if it's under warranty, so if they fuck it up it just costs them more.

I had one one my buddies take his corvette to a dealer just down the road and while it was there it actually FELL off the lift. The dealer was going to repair the car at no cost (of course) but he argued that cars that are repaired are never as good as they once were and that the resale value would go way down. It all went to court and the dealer ended up having to give hima new car. Just freaks me out that things like this actually happen. And happen more often that a person would care to hear about.

That's unbelievable! How could they ever, in there right minds, think
that they could get away with just repairing it. And don't you need to be trained
and certified before using a car lift, I just can't see that a trained mechanic would
make such a mistake, or was his certification forged(that's becoming a bigger and
bigger problem these days).
I get a little bit annoyed when I look on the driving comp and see how far they have driven and the speeds they have been driving with it.
Have you ever seen the movie "Ferris Buelers Day Off" were the valet
people take the Ferrari 250gt California out for a 250ml joy ride.
I have no fear of bringing my car to the dealer cause I have been going
to the same place for over 8 years and there has been no serious problems
yet and the people their are all older mechanics with at least 20yrs experience.
I did go to a tire place once that forgot to tighten down the lug nuts, which
I thought was completely unexcusable, what would they have said if I had
gotten into a serious accident. Fortunately I always check the work that
has been done before I drive the car, which I think is an important safety
tip that everyone should use, and if you do find something wrong they are
are more likely to do something about it because it has never left there sight
and therefore could only have been their fault.
Well yes, someway I'm always scared, but my dealership is pretty good, big and serious.. so I'm sure my car is placed on skilled and trustfull hands.. and there is always a positive thing... I'm always damn curious about the car they will give me in substitution for the day :D next time it was just a Mini, and a One... but it was a blast LOL!

I'll resist naming dealers.. *cough* nucar on route 13 *cough*.
Back when I had my grand prix I took it in for a leaking cv joint and a busted water pump. Anyway first they didn't call me when the car was done. No biggy, most dealers do that crap. They wouldn't rent me a rentacar because at the time I was only 20. So that didn't go over well. Anyway, the kid drives the car around and steps out to let me take the car. Car is still running. I sit down in the car and every light on the dashboard is on. I went in a chewed them up and down. They tried to tell me they couldnt fix it till the next day.. And I quote "did you ask us to fix this?". This was a warrenty car and it wasn't broke like that when I gave it to them. I started to walk out and then I turned around and flipped. They ended uo making some special allowance to get me my free rent a car and fixed it that nite(after i threatened to sue). It turned out to be a speed sensor in the wheel that they busted. That was just the worst of a series of bad experiences with them.

They probably do that as a money making skeem. They probably have people
crashing their cars deliberately just so they can get them serviced at that place.

I haven't experienced many problems...but everytime my parents mazda goes in for something minor....more problems show up after being at the dealer. It has been back multiple times for the same minor thing- WTF? Why can't they fix it for good????
Amazing how the dealer can create more problems then the solve!!
I guess this is what happens when Ford buys a car company!

I used to live on a road where the mechanics for the local BMW and Mercedes dearship would shake down the cars to test their handiwork. On more than one occasion (2 occasions), I saw a mechanic rear-end another mechanic, both in customer cars. Even better, I saw a mechanic hit a car parked on the side of the road while a salesman was swapping seats with a customer during a test drive.

I jsut have flahbacks of that scene in "Ferris Buelers Day Off" when the two valet guys take out his Ferrari for a spin. I just invision the mechanics doing that and it makes me a wreck.

As "brembo" and "FerrariKiller" Suggested it probably happens quite
often, especially if you own a nice sports car like a BMW M3 or ,and
I don't want to scare you with this but, a corvette. I don't care if it's
just a tiny little chirping of the tire on startup or a full blown power
slide, it shouldn't happen, they have to learn that it is not theirs to do
anything with.

Thats good advice. I wish i had one of the computers that kept track of the speeds. I would snap if the guy went for a blast in my car!

Well it's basically all a matter of trust.
The car I drive isn't really popular amongst the Volvo mechaniscs.
> Too much electronics (mid 1980'ies style);
> An enginebay with very little room to move around: one needs hands of a 10 year old
So I drew up a shortlist of workshops which were said to employ mechanics who knew the Volvo 480 like the back of their hand. I visited each one of them, had a good talk with the people there and absorbed the atmosphere in the workshop.
Finally selected one some 25 miles from where I live wheras the 'offical' Volvo dealer is less than 10 miles away.
Made that decision some three years ago and more that 60,000 miles further on the road I haven't regretted my choice for one moment :fadein:

not really..... back here in india people just start screaming at the dealer if they see put up any extra miles...and refuse to pay...simply walk away form the dealership with the car...the reason being everyone is an influential son of a bitch.

I don't trust em. I have seen what they do to cars and I ain't puttin my car through that. Besides they charge the earth. One example is that they quoted me £1300 to change my PAS Rack :( . So I removed it myself and got it reconditioned for £100 + Vat. Coneected it back up and it's good as gold.

I do most of it myself but if it's something really serious like My dad's Maxima had the 6th gear shit out on him and the car was only 3 weeks old so it got taken to the dealer and they replaced it in about a week (not fixed but actually replaced the whole tranny) and the bonus was he got a free 350Z as a rental.

Just the same as I do, and I really enjoy doing this stuff so the fact that its cheaper is just a bonus.
And if you do it yourself you get to know your car.
The problem is cars these day are so complex that
that is slowly becoming a thing of the past. You have
to be highly trained in both mechanics and computers
to work on most of the new cars, which is a real drag
because I to enjoy working on my own car.
Our local BMW dealer manager know me by name.. How you ask??
I use to own a BMW X5.. and I had my front fog light burned.. so I took it to them for changing the bulb.. I know it's just take out and fit it.. you can do it your self for 5 min.. But I was to lazy and it was a BMW I did not want to touch it hehehe.. anyway went to the dealer to buy a new bulb and asked them to fix it.. The service guy took out the Service Job book.. so I though to my self this might me a standered thing that every little job they need to log it in.. So took all the details and checked the car for scraches.. then said Ok .. It will be ready by tommorow morning.. and it wa s about 11:00 in the morning that time.. I told him are you serious or are you joking in a funny voice.. he said, No really I can't do it now I got a lot of jobs to do.. I told him it's just a 5 min job.. he said he can't ..
I took my car parked it infront of the gate entrace for the service.. no car can enter no car can exit.. Told him I won't move it until he fix it .. I know I was a big ass at that point.. I know I can just go do it at home. but no I want him to do it.. .. He gave up very quickly  and did the work.. but I had to move the car from the gate coz at that point the Manager came and asked me to in a good way. and that's how I know the manager.. hehehe  ..
So next time when your dealer says no.. you know what to do.

I use one of dad's cars, I've got to be cautious at a dealer. Since I'm a college student and can't afford a EVO or a Z06 yet.

Yeah, the majority of us wouldn't take the chance of the dealer damaging our cars. Not because we know that the dealer would have to fix them, but because it's just a hassle and a waste of time to get it fixed.

I don't have any problem to take it to the dealer, the car comes much better than if I tool it to a local mecanic that does the same thing, but it's something that's not enough.
Alright that the price to pay is huge, but sometimes i pay it. At least once a year, the car goes to the dealer =)

that's not a good thing that you have to take it to the dealer that often unless you even go there for oil changes.

01-22-2004, 08:31 PM
Unless it's something major, I never take mine in. All maintenence is done in my own garage. If something goes horribly wrong, I'd rather that I'm the one that does it. That way I don't have the urge to kill someone else.

Normally the oil changes are made in a mecanic that i know, works good and "cheap".
In the other day, my dad's car needed a gas bomb, i got one in the dealer cheaper than if was in another place. I bought it there.

But hey, you get big points for being as good as you are with Engligh being from Portugal!! English is one of the hardest languages in the world to learn. It just pisses me off when English people bitch about having to learn something easy like Spanish or French. Good Job Man!!

Sometimes it's difficult to say some words because i'm not used to write or speech "english". Always portuguese and like this time i didn't know the word =)

well if you have spoken english your whole life it comes very naturally. most english speaking nations only speak english, so learning spanish and french is not as easy as it may seem to you.
but i hate dealers, i refuse to take my car to a dealer, ive never had anything but getting screwed, not getting the work done or just plain dumbass people. so i just do all the work myself.

I took Spanish and French both for 5 years and I thought I was good. I realized that I didn't know shit once I went to those countries and taked to some of the locals. Learning slang and casual conversation is a bitch. I've become fluent in Spanish since then, but French is still a bit dicey.

I have a Ford Mustang and I brought it to the dealer for a so call recall and it turned out they put on (not replace) a circuit breaker for my cooling fan which was making my car overheat and the dealer was complaining to me saying that it wasn't their fault. Am I nervous now that I go to the dealer? Yes, but its ironic cus I am going to school to become a dealer technician...I have learned how to do my job right though
