Why the sigma and not the nikon? Well first off it was $500 less. Second: I could find it. And the quality is reportedly close to that of the Nikon. By the way it feels it id agree. As for the picture quality I dont know but ive heard its close. Also this one has a cool feature where i can manually focus while still in AF mode.

On the link you showed the Sigma price was $1360 while the Nikon 80-400 is about $1450 - so I think the difference was about $100. Did you get a discount?

Have fun shooting. Are you going to take it to the football games?

Big ass lense! 400 mm is a lot. Show us some samples when you can!

I turn into a creepy stalker whenever I look through my camera at 200mm, I can't imagine what 400mm would be like!

Either way, nice bazooka.

Its generally sold for $1000 at most places i could find. I dont shoot sports any more since i graduated, and its technically too slow anyway. but ill use it for sight seeing and wildlife type things.

I've shot with a Sigma 80-400 once, but that was 1,5 years ago. Do you miss the HSM/AF-S/USM-autofocus?

As compared to the nikon 80-400 not really. Its about the same. As compared to my 18-70 which is silent and fast, ehh yes but i think it comes with the territory for a lens this long and with such a large range.

I don't understand why Sigma put's HSM in their 50-500 and OS in their 80-400. They have the technology in house, so why not combine it? :)

This Sigma is a great lens for the price. I'm interested like you to take a long telezoom lens and I'm waiting some yours sample! ...Expecially at 400mm :D Actually for Canon (my camera body) the 100-400 IS remain my first choice...but look the price.... :shocked!:
Bigma  50-500 is another interesting lens but without OS is hard to use...

Nice looking lens...a while back I thought, hmm I should get a 400mm, then I took a look at the prices, and that quickly changed my mind! :P I've read good things about this Sigma, and with the prices savings compared to the Nikon it is definitely a deal! I can't wait to see some pics. :D

Good luck with it mate. Those genuine Nikon optics are bloody expensive indeed :x  But Sigma offers a good alternative.

Cheers

I'm trying to decide on a new lens myself... i'm leaning toward the Canon 70-200 F2.8 IS... but the 100-400 F4.5 IS is also very tempting... right now, i'm shooting with a 100-300... so that 100mm range is what I'm used to... but it would be nicer to be closer to the subject...
