there is an awful lot of costom hacks to this cobalt theme... some of them pulled off, others not.... unless karma chimes in and tells me i'm wrong.

Yes you are missing something, its called the layout and design rather than the theme, although I find it hard to believe that it was a co-incidence that they also chose cobalt (out of the hundreds of other themes that are available).
