these are the only two spyware search/removal programs i can think of. i'm currently using ad-aware and it works ok but i'm wondering if any of you can tell me anything about spybot, your experiences with it and how good it has treated you and such. it'd be a bonus if anyone here has used BOTH and can tell me which of the two they would recommend most. there's something bad going on with my comp and i can't find it with my anti-virus software and i'm hoping spyware searching can do the trick. please help

Spybot search and destroy is a relly good program I recommend using both of them since they occasionaly find different programs. I use both personally and I haven't come across any problems

i use both also..when u run Spy-boot it suggests that u download a program..i cant remember what it is and i am not at that comp right now but id download that also
it helps to stop the crap from getting on ur comp in the first place
i like the feature of spybot that locks the homepage and other internet settings from being changed in the browser window..that stops any and all hi jack attempts
but a good firewall would work well also

I also use both, and they're decent. It seems all those porn sites I visit put all kinds of crap on my computer. Now I've learned a trick to avoid those fucking cookies.

I'm using Mcafee 2004 Internet Security, some features about it are annoying the hell out of me. I think I might switch to Zone Alarm.

I've been using spybot for quite a while now, it has never let me down. They aren't big programs, so running both might not be a bad idea.

cookies are not that bad just clean them out every few days

Except for webtrends and tracking cookies. I have my firewall ask for permission whenever a new cookie is detected.

I don't know, I use Norton Internet Security. I would think you would be able too. Check Zone Alarms website, I'm sure you can find your answer there.

doesn't it become a hassle though if you're always busy on the net? like every page you visit you have to get a notice from your firewall thingy?

No, not really. Once you have either accepted or blocked the cookie, it remembers it. So it'll never ask you again. Besides, most sites only try and give you one cookie. Whereas I have had 10 of them popup in a row.
One of the good things with Norton is it'll tell you what the cookie is and sometimes when it expires. Thats good because you will know what to block. Some are popup cookies, webtrends, or tracking stuff. It'll say so in the description. The only one that I know it doesn't block is the Sextracker ones. I'm sure you know where those come from!
But Spybot easily removies them.

Nope, it was $40. It's both a firewall and a virus scanner. Well worth the price though.

I used Ad-aware for a good bit of time on my main comp, and ran Spybot on the other computer in the house. It seemed to me that Spybot updated a bit more frequently than Ad-aware did, but both did a rather good job at smacking down any spyware if run on a somewhat frequent basis. Either one of them seem to work alright. I'll have to try using both :)

i've been using spybot for a few days now and i noticed while running spybot that it scans certain files on my comp that i never authorized to be present in the first place and yet it just passes up those files and doesn't list them as spyware or threats. i'm starting to not believe in these supposed "spyware removal programs"
mhn3773
01-26-2004, 06:04 AM
no it works..just because it isnt authorized doesnt mean its not supposed to be there...
in spybot..make sure its updated then click imunize that helps alot..i also like to use the block IE homepage change thing aswell as the block bad downloads part of spybot they work well fromwhat i can tell
