Fascinating vid Kawa22 :!:
Guess the 2nd picture you've choosen captures the memories I've got on Giles, when I stroll along memorylane, perfectly :fadein:
Wouldn't it be nice if FIA changed the technical regulations for F1 once more. In such a manner that close racing and slipstreaming is possible again.

Gilles was amazing because he came from snowmobile racing to F1. The most unique route of anyone in F1. I love snowmobiling and F1 and I wish I could have seen him racing in my backyard in upstate New York.

I have also never seen Gilles Villeneuve driving but I've seen some videos about him and basing my opinion on them I think he was one of the greatest in the F1 world. The way he drove...it seems nearly impossible to keep the car inside the track going so fast and so wild as he did.

probably the most outwardly passionate driver there was.

I've heard of a story where at some track (maybe Monaco) in the WET, he was somehow 11 seconds (!!!) faster in qualifying than everyone else. He gave everything, all the time. I'd love to see a driver like him now.

yes that's true, but it was in USA GP West 1979 - on Watkins Glen.
the conditions were horrible, the track was completely flooded. Jody Scheckter (Gilles' team mate) set the best lap time, and than Gilles put a lap 11 FULL SECONDS !!! faster than anyone else!!!

read about this feat here:

Villeneuve was great, my 2nd fav driver ever, to bad his son does not fit into f1 as good as he did.
