View Full Version : Looking for a slim digital camera that also shoots video

The thought of getting a secondary, compact digital camera for nights out and for taking car videos has popped into my head.

I'd like something small enough to put in a pocket or girls purse and able to shoot up to 1hr of decent quality video (640x480). Preferably one that uses SD cars so I can swap them between my Nikon D50.

Any suggestions?

A good friend of mine has a EXILIM, his uncle repairs them too.. so it might be a good idea just to grab one of those.

Sony makes a really slim digital camera (they pretty much all shoot low res digitial video). If you beef it up with a 4 gig card it might shoot an hour.

I'm using an IXUS 850IS next to my EOS 5D, and so far I've been very happy with it. 28mm wide-angle, high ISO's ánd IS make for a perfect party-camera. 8)

I've got the Casio Exilim Z1000 (10,2 megapixel) and it's great! Real good value!

Can you record videos as long as you have the space for it or does it have a time limit?

Also wondering that about the Casio..

Canon says: "Up to 4GB or 1 hour (L and M, 30/15fps)"

It can also take SDHC, so maybe it'll allow for even longer videos in the future.

Canon SD Pocket Elph lines. . . e.g. the IXUS.

I am looking at either the SD1000 or the SD750 right now.

How about grabbing one of the latest Sony Ericsson cybershot phones? Dont know if they are available in the USA though...

If I could wait until the end of the year (when a butt-load of new all-in-one cellphones are released) I would just get a new phone with +2mp camera.. But I also want to record videos with decent quality... I'd like to do things like tape the camera to the bumper of my car or dash :D

Looks like a great competitor to the Ixus SD800

12MP + Leica optics = killer P&S

Thing is, I don't even want a 12mp camera.. Sure it would be nice to make large ass prints, but I still haven't even made a 16x20 print using my D50.

I'd be perfectly happy with 6MP, especially if it's a point and shooter.

how about something with a GPS? CSI will love you for this. :)

The Sony Ericsson K800i (at least thats its name in Europe) has 3.2mp and the video quality is pretty nice. Also new Nokia N95 is a kick-ass photo/video phone.

I have the K800i and the photos are the best convenient video & still camera. It still doesnt compare to a dedicated P&S

From what I've heard the N95 isnt as you'd want it to be.

way too much photosites on a tiny sensor + Leica sticker on the lens = ? ;)

afaik Leica uses Panny bodies w/ their lenses. The diff you get from a Panny & a Leica is the software, external design and $$$.

photosites on a tiny sensor?

dutchmasterflex

the sensor isn't big enough to take full advantage of the 12 million pixels..

If they could figure a way how to squeeze giant SLR-like sensors in these slim P&S, we wouldn't need 12mp+ point and shoots ;)

evoWalo

from what i've read the smaller the pixels on the sensor the more "noisy" the image becomes.

a full frame sensor on a P&S would make it very expensive. like LCD & plasmas I guess prices for full frame sensors will plummet given a few years.

I played around with a friends Elph SD600. I really like the feature that automatically rotates the image when viewing them on the LCD.

Resell value of those camera's seem pretty good as most of them are going for 200+ on ebay.

I may just try and wait until the end of the year to buy a new cellphone/mp3/pointandshooter

Sounds great. I'll have to see if my friend's uncle who repairs Casio digital cameras can get me a good deal.

Can you record long videos? 30min+?

Erez

i'm pretty sure you can go as long as your mem will let let you.. and since it has SDHC support ;)
