Sorry in advance, but what are newgroups.... i seem to have not noticed them until now, and i can't understand them. :?

I've not signed up to any just yet, but i think i may sign up to this one
http://v3.newzbin.com/

What lies beneath the surface of these sites?... direct HTTP downloads, or access to torrents, and a user account which requires you to keep a healthy UL/DL ratio?

Any further explanation would be welcome :D

does nobody else know what they are for?

glad i'm not the only one then... lol.

I think i'll sign up to newzbin with my spam email account

That kind of makes sense....

I've registered on newzbin, but i need to add credit to my account to be able to so much... does this credit give me access to torrent files?

Strange that they should charge for a service that encourages copyright theft/infringement. :|

I use them.

You need a site/forum where they say what they posted and where. Then you can copy the filename they give to www.binsearch.info for instance, look it up and if it finds the file you can make a NZB link of it. Now you can open this NZB link with programs like Grabit or Newsleecher. In those programs you have to create a server with which it downloads whatever you want to download. You can either use your own connection as a server or go for a payserver.

You should get over the idea that newsgroups have anything to do with bittorrent. It's a complete different way of downloading altogether. One big difference and advantage over torrents is that you don't have to upload anything! Over time I've downloaded several terabytes from newsgroups, but I didn't upload one single byte to usenet!

This is an advantage because it is fully legal to download copyrighted video & sound files of any kind (at least in the Netherlands). The uploading part is what's illegal.

Here's a great tutorial with everything you need to know about how to get started on newsgroups:

 http://www.binaries4all.com/beginners

It may seem complicated at first, but in fact it's really easy!
Good luck!

And the irony of it all?

Newsgroups are the original digital commucation mechanism... they predate the Intardnetwebs :P ;)

Talk about going full circle :P hehe

I would love to help you with a free server.. problem is, I don't use one myself

I got tired of working with crappy free Dutch servers which only gave me incomplete files, so I decided to get a payserver. It costs me about €6,50 each month, but the retention is 50 days and I hardly ever get incomplete files, plus I can download files at my maximum internet connection speed. A good payserver is really recommended, imo even if you don't download huge amounts of data. It's just so much more convenient to work with.

For Heroes and other TV shows, you should check out posts by NoPoints4U (http://www.binsearch.net/?max=250&g=alt.binaries.tv&a=NoPoints4U%40abmm.com+%28NoPoints4U%29)

I bet you use Eweka, like me

Svensson

^ I considered Eweka, but then chose Tweaknews, because for me it was a little bit cheaper at the time.
I might try Eweka when my Tweaknews subscription ends this summer. I saw they improved their retention up to 70 days! Great stuff :D

cool... it seems giganews looks like a good service.

Yesterday, i got the error that alt.binaries.boneless is not availalbe on this server... do some of these groups appear only on payservers?

Svensson
05-07-2007, 07:30 AM
That's another big reason to get a payserver. They support nearly all newsgroups, at least all the populair ones. Free servers often don't.
Giganews is a very good choice! Perhaps a bit expensive but they offer a lot.

Thx for the advice... i'll take a look around these sites before picking the most cost effective one... there is no point in paying loads for something that you can get cheaper elsewhere :)

here is a site about newsgroup, and how to use it

http://www.binaries4all.com/grabit/

^ Yeah, that's the link I posted on the first page. Really informative.

Grabit is the easiest newsreader to begin with. Imo Newsleecher with its "Supersearch" function is better, but it's not a free service. The "problem" with usenet is indeed that it can be a bit unorganized if you don't know what to look for. That's why there are indexing services & communities which tell you exactly what has been posted, at what location and by what name, so it's a piece of cake to find exactly what your looking for.

I'm thinking of signing up to Giganews... i'd be interested to hear what you think of the service, and the groups available :good:

I like the idea of a direct DL, rather than a P2P type thing

Twboy1999,

What you need is to join something like a newsgroup community or forum, where members tell you exactly what they posted, where they posted it and under what exact filename. As you've probably experienced, it sometimes can be hard to find exactly what you're looking for, because people often post files on usenet under a "cryptic" name, or just a plain number. What a usenet community does, is provide a place where people can report what they posted or spotted on usenet, together with more info concerning the files.

A very good community in the Netherlands is FTD. It's only available in Dutch, but binaries4all have written an English tutorial on how to download the program and how exactly to use it. It's very handy!

Check it out here: http://www.binaries4all.com/ftd
