Well, there are suppliers and then there are the manufacturers themselves

Restoration places like Classic Industries will sell the usual assortment of GM Performance Parts engines along with the rather pricey Edelbrock crate motors.


Just thrumb through any issue of Hot Rod magazine, Car Craft, Checy High Performace etc and you'll see a ton of ads.

There's always places like Summit and Pace Performance. Jegs is pretty cool in that they offer 2 day shipping for free. As far as Chevy 350's go, I always like the one offered by Year One.

Be careful though! Alot of crate engine manufacturers do relatively sloppy machining. If you get, oh let's say a 383 stroker from Golen, don't expect anything to be balanced. You'd definitely want to have your machine shop go through one of those motors. A GMPP engine on the other hand should be pretty much ready out of the box as advertised. What kind of engine are you looking for and for what?

What kind of engine are you looking for? There are a ton of companies that sell crate engines but its easier if you know what you are looking for, i.e. Chevy, Ford, etc.

Well here is the story..

I got a Landrover Defender 90 and I got the original Rover V8 with 3.5 engine.

I want to replace that engine with a much higher performance engine.

Did not decide on which brand to go for as I really don't know the difference, all I know i'm looking for a lot more torque something in the region of 450 to 500 would be satisfying for now, and has to be an Aluminium Block

Any suggestions would be great.

I know Rover V8's use to be an american engine but they sold the right to rover. Can't really remember which company was it originally from but if you do know let me know and do you think the engine mounts are similar or would that need to be modified as well.

I am not sure where the original V8s came from as I have little to no experience with Rovers. 666fast says Buick and I have no reason to doubt him. That being said, you may need to change the mounts. If it turns out that is the case, a lot of the major crate suppliers have plastic casts of the more popular blocks (i.e. Chevy 350, Ford 302, etc) that will make it a lot easier to move and plan out where you are going to fasten the engine rather than trying to do it with the real block.

It all comes down to what you want the engine to do and how much you want to spend.

I have seen the 572 Chevy engine couple of times and I love it but don't think my transmission or transferbox would like it.

I want to get an engine that I can drop straight in with out worring if it is balanced and not properly build.

No I am not talking about fitting the engine in.. I am talking about build quality of the engine. I don't want to have trouble with the engine before even starting it up..

Well just that I don't know what is a branded good quality engine builder and what is not.

The Rover engine is a reenginered Buick design. Yo're looking for something like a 4.6 out of a recent Range Rover, try looking in the UK. You could always go fr a TVR 5.0 engine ;)
