I was only 5 years old at the time, but I can still remember that it was big news when it happened and it certainly made an impact on me.

I was about 5 too and I still remember it. Sad day.
Let us hope the event isn't repeated soon if ever at all.

I think 4 of his class mates have died on cancer now and that is strange because they're not even 40 years old now. Did Chernobyl have affect, who knows?

I heard the casing around it is falling apart and if it were to collapse a huge ton of nuclear dust would be released. There trying to get some funding to completely encase it. I forgot were I read that :| scary stuff
They have built a new sarcofacus around the reactor already couple times, but ofcourse they only last a certain time.
no, they only built one and are engineering the 2nd one as the first one is scheduled to last about 25 years.

They will start building the new one in few months time, the project cost is around 2 billion.
It will be a double shield, and they project will take a few years to complete.
