View Full Version : Metric vs Imperial
:mrgreen:
I have no idea whats with the Imperial system.. :lol:
In the words of Grandpa Simpson: "The metric system is the tool of the devil! My car gets 40 rods to the hogshead, and that's the way I likes it!"
:lol: wish I could find that clip :lol:

Metric of course.
crushing victory so far :lol: 6:0

metric, it uses logic instead of seemingly random numbers...

I kinda like imperial, makes me think of the Darkside :twisted: :lol:

12 inches= foot
3feet=yard
what's there not to like ? :P ;) Brings the tally to 9:0 with my vote.

I grew up using the Imperial (though no one calls it that here, its just standard or SAE) but after working on various European cars, I begun to like the metric system better.
only reason why I really hate Imperial is when it comes to tools.. how the fuck can you know whats 8/16 etc means?! :lol: doesn't 13, 17, 19 etc sounds more normal? :lol:
anyways where are the rest of the americans\brits or whaterver with the votes? :lol:
we're at 17:1 :lol:

metric....
oh... wasn't there some NASA problems regarding Mars when they tried the metric system?haha
^ na.. the idiots just used metric for one thing and imperial for another :lol:

^^ LOL!
I wonder what Imperial Vessels use in StarWars :wink:

Metric all the way. It's the one I'm more familiar with. I also find it more congruous with the numeric system because it uses round numbers.
well.. 23:1.. thats pretty damn conclusive.. :lol: metric rules :P (at least here @JW.. :mrgreen: )

that pretty much sums it up :lol:
metric is where it's at bitches :P

Metric, grew up with it.

The advantages of metric outweigh the advantages of the imperial system.
Even if it's the french who have to be thanked for that one :lol:

within science, the chemist measures the calorie, the electrical engineer measures the watt, others jules, others BTU.... nothing is all encompassing
typing errors not fixed
[17:43] nth's friend: exactly
[17:43] NthFinity: and each of those makes sence within thier own field
[17:43] NthFinity: but to convert them, they aren't even close to similar
[17:43] NthFinity: even with distance
[17:44] nth's friend: i agree
[17:44] NthFinity: a KM makes no variance when measuring AU's, light years etc.
[17:44] nth's friend: yup
[17:44] NthFinity: ultimately
[17:44] NthFinity: each measuring has it's on features
[17:44] nth's friend: in reality i prefer using metric only cause i can picture the size in my head.. but even that its still arbitrary
[17:44] nth's friend: not metric
[17:44] nth's friend: imperial I mean
[17:44] nth's friend: lol
[17:44] nth's friend: i can picture an inch
[17:44] NthFinity: metric came partially out of the need to make phisical science make sence... 1 gm of water is 1 ml requires one calorie to heat it one degree.... etc.
[17:45] nth's friend: 75 degrees
[17:45] NthFinity: oh
[17:45] NthFinity: yeah
[17:45] NthFinity: F is way more sen e
[17:45] NthFinity: ;)
[17:45] NthFinity: but not at all in a scientific means
[17:45] NthFinity: lol
[17:45] NthFinity: but in human comfrot
[17:45] nth's friend: Celcius makes no sense in science either
[17:46] nth's friend: for that you need Kelvin
[17:46] nth's friend: which
[17:46] nth's friend: makes no sense at all to a layman
[17:52] NthFinity: no
[17:52] NthFinity: it does make sence
[17:52] NthFinity: 0 C = STP freezing
[17:52] NthFinity: 100 = boililng STP
[17:52] NthFinity: that makes sence
[17:52] NthFinity: but humans live below 0, and nowhere near 100
[17:52] nth's friend: thats celcius
[17:53] nth's friend: kelvin starts at absolute 0
[17:53] NthFinity: duh
[17:53] nth's friend: I couldnt tell you what room temperature is anymore
[17:53] nth's friend: that makes no sense to a human
[17:53] NthFinity: high 2q0's to mid 30's for hot
[17:53] NthFinity: right
[17:53] NthFinity: the varience in temp within 1 deg. F is way less then in C
[17:53] NthFinity: so relaly, F is more accurate
[17:53] NthFinity: for us
[17:54] nth's friend: yeah.. true
[17:54] nth's friend: i wasnt saying celcius doesnt make sense
[17:54] nth's friend: though.. fahrenheit makes more based on what I was raised in
[17:54] nth's friend: kelvin numbers are meaningless to most humans
[17:54] NthFinity: well
[17:54] NthFinity: in radio astronomy
[17:55] NthFinity: 300 K is measurable ;)
[17:55] nth's friend: the melting point of ice.. aka 0 in celcius and 32 in fahrenheit
[17:55] NthFinity: a lot
[17:55] nth's friend: is freaking 273.15 degrees
[17:55] nth's friend: i didnt say it wasnt measurable
[17:55] nth's friend: i just said it makes no sense to a non scientific person
[17:55] nth's friend: if I told you it was 290 degrees K outside youd look at me with a funny look on your face
[17:56] NthFinity: no
[17:56] NthFinity: most people would tho
[17:56] NthFinity: :P
[17:57] nth's friend: so without conversion factor
[17:57] nth's friend: what temperature is 290
[17:57] nth's friend: lol
[17:57] nth's friend: and thanks for proving my point by the way ;)

metric. It makes more sense and easier to live with it.

within science, the chemist measures the calorie, the electrical engineer measures the watt, others jules, others BTU.... nothing is all encompassing
;)
That gave me a question. Watts still use the prefixes from the metric system, kilowatt, megawatt, etc. Does the imperial units use prefixes? Kiloyard sounds nice :lol:
there are always conversions needed
just ask the electrical engineers
ask the phisisists
ask the astro phisisists
ask the chemical engineers
ask the nuclear phisisists
each of thie units brought to thier fundimental foundings make 100% perfect sence fore them.... but conversions are needed to transpire
BTU isnt always directly comparable to these
Joule
Volt
Watt
Calorie
MeV
Torque
Horsepower
etc.
it all depends on what you are looking at, and how... metric isn't all encompassing.. even distance
Mile
KM
AU
Light Year
Parsec (yes, they do exist beyond starwars)
1 joule is exactly 107 ergs.
1 joule is approximately equal to:
* 6.24150636309 ×1018 eV (electronvolts)
* 0.238845896628 cal (calorie) (small calories, lower case c)
* 2.390 ×10−4 kilocalorie, Calories (food energy, upper case C)
* 9.47817120313 ×10−4 BTU (British thermal unit)
* 0.737562149277 ft·lbf (foot-pound force)
* 23.7 ft·pdl (foot poundals)
* 2.7778 ×10−7 kilowatt-hour
* 2.7778 ×10−4 watt-hour
* 9.8692 ×10−3 litre-atmosphere
Having multiple systems of measurement is key to science. All are useful, none are all encompassing

phisisists
I just have to point this out..
Physicists..
