This one was new to me, and one of the best that I have seen from Best Motoring. Check out the 996 turbo almost losing it:

No, apparently it was derestricted of that limit. Nismo is their in-house tuning arm, I believe.

New to me too! Thanks! :good:

And yes Nismo can tune their cars over the 276BHP limit so I believe!

Quote: ''Since 1989 Japanese auto manucturers agreed to limit advertised horsepower to 276HP. Notice I said advertised horsepower. Most of the big name cars were advertised at 276HP, but most had more than that in reality. For example, the R34 GTR was advertised at 276HP, but if you were to take one off the line and dyno it, the numbers would be closer to 350HP. But, they're beginning to forget that agreement. Many cars are coming out of the factory with more horsepower and cars of the future, with even more.''

Yes the 280 hp limit in Japan is analogous to the 250 km/h speed limit agreed amongst German car manufacturers (except Porsche, of course).

Interestingly, as you mention is the case with the hp limit in Japan, several german models are being made available with optional speed limit increases from the factory (at a price). Two that readily come to mind are the M6, and some of the 6.3L Mercs.

For trivias sake the first non-Porsche german vehicle to 'cheat the 250 km/h limit (since it had been agreed to), was the original audi RS4 (i.e. 2.7L V6 380 hp). I belive several mags said it would do a confirmed 165-170 mph, before the limiter kicked in...

BTW, I saw a 997 GT3 RS as above going in the opposite direction on the highway today, on my way home from work. It's the first one I've seen. The weather is just starting to get into summer temp. territory now...
