I kind of understand why, but it is a bit silly to ban them!

Doubt they'll ban it, doesn't ICBC (our own provincial insurance company) give you a discount if you have an alarm+immobolizer installed? So they know it works, to a certain degree. The city counsil people come up with ridiculous ideas all the time.

i think they will only ban those aftermarket ones
Already in Vancouver motorists can be ticketed if their alarm goes off for more than a minute, or more than three times in a 24 hour period.
since they have this by-law already, so banning all car alarms isn't really that necessary

Yeah, no one likes hearing car alarms go off but any attempt to ban them is a ridiculous overstepping of authority by a city council. The problem is that in Canada, legal precident allows municipalities to create laws outside of their purvue and leaves it up to the voters to decide if the laws are justified through elections. It's a ridiculous practice that we can thank Chief Justice McLachlin for.
god imagine the car theft figure. bound to go up if they know that there arnt alarms in cars now?!?!

Have to admit though, nobody cares about alarm going off nowadays. Unless you have immobolizer together with alarm, there's not much practical use beside scaring the thief. What they should do is to set a standard for car alarms so they include immobolizer and don't go off someone drove by with a fart pipe. It's funny how many alarms go off when a civic with 10" pipe goes around the parking lot. Almost as bad as a cell phone symphony.

I'd rather se 100 people annoyed than my car stolen. I have set the sensitivity to the highest level, you can't eve look at it ...
Stopped wheel thieves 3 times so far (found 1 screw missing, tools by the car ...)
