I think the lower models did, but a lot of them have discs all around.

even the Formula with the Small Block had 4 wheel discs.

The spin was the result of driver error.

this video is basically way way wayyyyyyy older then JW :P

I thought the Formula Firebird's were the good models as they were the ones with the 300lb lighter bodies.

And that spin was definitely driver error.. silly pig was scared a little E30 would run his Camaro off the road..

less beefy suspension, uglier.... yes, it is less weight.... but the afformentioned make it the bad one IMHO :P

less beefy suspension eh.. I thought the Formula name promoted the opposite.

The formula is the v6 with a v8 engine. ITs lighter but not 300 lbs lighter.. its lighter like no leather seats lighter. Regardless its a rather poor comparison for 2 reasons..
A) a police car prolly has another 300-400 lbs of police equipment in it (and the interceptor models of the fbody are not beefed up from stock).
B) its a bloody lt1. they havent made then since 1997 and only had 285 bhp. It wasnt even the best engine in a fbody then... Still given this is clearly a rather straight road even with the weight the camaro is clearly faster in a straight line which means one of 3 things:
1) the cop doesnt want to crowd the teen (very possible)
2) the e30 m3 is modified.

This video is almost as old as I am, but it is still very good one. I like it how the pronouncer dramatizes the video "stoulen vehicle rokkkets douwn the freewey". That dark voiced movie announcer should do these videos, they could be sold as movies  Thanks!

that dumbass cop almost killed himself and another officer by spinning out like that.

Oh, and you're better because...?

Interesting video. I used to watch World's Wildest Police Chases all the time.

holy crap....i highly doubt the car broke down. The clip they showed seemed to be the same shot from when he slammed on the brakes to avoid the spike strip.

i love how they say he was inexperienced yet managed to out drive the entire force.

Who knows if the car broke down but the clip at the end wasnt of him breaking down.

I'll bet that it broke down like many other BMW's before it. The kid didn't really outdrive the force. He faked out the cop who overeacted and ruined his car but that was about it. These shows do dramatize the narration but I don't doubt the kid could have been 15. Afterall, you can still get your license at 14 in some states (South Dakota for instance).

could the police cars top speed be limited by the tires or gear ratios?

He out drove the cops. period. If the cop really wanted the chase to end he would have let the kid hit him and not driven off the road in the first place.

The only way you can get your license at 14 is if it's a farm license that lets you drive the farm equipment between the fields and gas station. It's not an all inclusive license.

The driving licenses are all inclusive. Several of my cousins in the midwest have done it (they are about my age). Also remember that this video is old and some laws may have changed. At any rate, the only people who think driving at 14 is so terribly foreign are the urban folks who never get out enough.

Going 130+ (faster than most the average police cruiser can go) is not outdriving, it's just pedal mashing. The cop messed up and paid for it. He was the only one outdriven.

If you want me to accept your definition of "outdriven" perhaps you can drive some soccer mom's minivan and I'll pass you in any given sports car and then claim to have outdriven you. Nothing to do with driving talent.

i have a hard time believing that police cruisers top out at 125. even the old ones.

A couple of those were sitting out in front of him and had a chance to make themselves a rolling road block. they had communication amongst themselves and still couldn't organize to stop him, even after he doubled back and headed towards all the units he had just ditched.

ramming cars etc at high speed is hardly ideal. I think it was obvious that their preferred method was to use the spike strips which aren't that hard to drive around even at high speed. In case you never noticed, police chases are more concerned with following unless things get really out of hand. In this case, the highway had traffic but wasn't terribly packed. Those units that were passed were there not just to keep ahead of the chase but also to deal with the other cars on the highway.
