Finally found some time to start this topic, picked the car up my Jap-spec Evo 8 MR on Thursday night. Not officially sold here, the previous owner importing it from Japan himself and getting it complied.

I haven't given it a proper thrashing on backroads yet (Easter weekend means huge fines if caught) but its already evident how much of a step up over the WRX (even a modded one) this is.

A few points:

1. The Recaro seats are just sensational!! I'm in love!
2. Brembo brakes are huge and a big improvement over the Subi 4-pots.
3. Steering is very light and direct.
4. The 6-speed is stunning, very easy to use and has a great feel. The clutch takes some getting used too and heel-and-toeing isn't as easy as in the WRX.
5. HIDs are nice, work well.
6. Great acceleration for a stock car, I reckon it would be pretty even with my WRX given the ratios. Sounds slower though. :P Despite having a FMIC there is alot less lag (kicks in between 3000-3500), the twin-scroll TD05 turbo helping in this case.
7. Sensational handling, not too hard to get the tail a little light and pretty much no understeer.
8. Hard to see the front of the car since its so short and hard to see out the back with the big cf wing.
9. NEEDS LOWERING ASAP!!!! Too high.

That'll be the first thing I do next week, get some Whiteline Control lowering springs (35mm drop).

Then it'll be a Tomei and Trust exhaust and an ECU retune, which will really get the thing going - will already be quicker than the Rex by that stage.

So all in all I'm in love already and looking forward to the journey of modifying this thing into a beast. :D

Some quick pics, will take more as I progress.

blinkmeat and MIHALS - I still have the Scooby too for the moment. The WRX is for sale but until its sold I can choose which red beast to drive in the morning.

P.S. Evo is winning that decision so far, took the WRX to the shops just then which is the first time I've driven it since getting the Evo.

...I thought Subaru WRX STi came with Brembo's as well? :?:

Yes the STi has brembos, but not the WRX.

Will you get rid of the writings on the boot?

Yeah I'll definately remove the "Lancer" badge and the Mitsubishi diamond, but will leave the "Evolution MR" bit so everyone can still tell its a limited-edition special. ;)

Congrat's on the car. Sure you'll love it to death....

Why the ECU re-tune? Thought the MR already came with with a ralliart tuned ECU (power output 350'ish HP). Different downpipe and freeflow exhaust (3 inch) do wonders.

Look very well after your brakes. The disks on the EVO are prone to warping. (at least they were on my EVO VI).

fancy non functional names ;) ...
those fins straighten the air flow to nearly equate the amount of downforce on both ends of the wings .. the car does not go fast enough to generate vortexex out of those little pieces anyway ;) ....

dingo . .you should really consider a big photoshoot of both the cars togather .. 8)

Yes I'm swaying towards black rims for this car too, not right yet though.

Once the Evo is lowered I will try and do a photoshoot with the 2 cars. :D

Any other probs? I live in Australia remember.

These rims will become track wheels with r-comps (semi slicks) on them in the future so doesn't bother me. They are 17" Enkeis and lightweight, perfect for track.

Vortex Generator was an option.

Love the new pickup Dingo. I always liked the Evo and definitely respected its performance.

I like the new rear bumper on the new Evo IXs:

A friend of mine has them on his Evo, the wheels look very good on a white car.

I agree on the tailights, I much prefer the normal ones. The clear tailights were an option, unfortunately, most Evo's I see have them.

Congrats man, it looks great! If you're gonna get an MBC you can disregard this. If you're gonna get it reflashed, you should remove the pill from the vacuum line to the boost solenoid. It makes a huge difference.

That said, you should really get an MBC. With my Dejon MBC, I'm boosting to ~22psi and tapering down to ~21psi. No more boost flux like I had with the stock solenoid. A test pipe is pretty cheap and will give you great gains.

Not problems just questions

See I just figured all the MR's were the same since our MR is Identical to the FQ as they call it in Europe so I just assumed. and here the vortex generators were standard so again I assumed.

If you remember I said the Evo is waay better than the STi IMO

just springs for the moment, the handling really is that good that I don't think coilovers are justified right now.

04-17-2007, 07:33 PM
performance mods, woo hoo.arent the evos good for like 40-50hp increase with boost controller and full exhaust?

what you planning to do?

666fast
04-17-2007, 07:38 PM
If the stock exhaust is anything like the american versions, it's unbelievably restrictive. My friend has 3" turbo back piping and it made a huge difference. not just in power, but in noise, it's almost too loud. lol

TopGearNL
04-17-2007, 07:39 PM
just springs for the moment, the handling really is that good that I don't think coilovers are justified right now.

Is the handling better then the Scooby at this moment, without any major changes?

Nice new sig BTW! :D

dingo
04-17-2007, 08:34 PM
Yep I'll be going for 3" exhaust (Tomei/Trust) and an ECU retune (safer than boost controller) - should make quite a difference with more controlled boost.

I will be heading to the 1/4 mile tonight (if rain holds off) to test the car stock standard, I wanna be able to see what difference each mod makes.

Handling wise - the Evo is way above and beyond the WRX even like it is now. The way the AWD works (AYC mode I'm still working out which is best - gravel or tarmac), the steering feel and the tendancy to oversteer rather than understeer is great. Took it into the hills on Sunday morning and was as quick as the Rex without having to push anywhere near as hard.

TopGearNL
04-17-2007, 08:37 PM
^^ Yeah seems common fact so I hear that the Scooby understeers and the Evo rather oversteers in which the computer will sort it out..

Anyway nice to hear that! I mean who would know better then a man who has owned both?! :D

tuffguy
04-17-2007, 10:36 PM
Yep I'll be going for 3" exhaust (Tomei/Trust) and an ECU retune (safer than boost controller) - should make quite a difference with more controlled boost.
wrong... you still need a boost controller (get flashed/tuned first though). also remove the pill from the vacuum hose to the solenoid.

before i got my manual boost controller (MBC) i used EcuFlash to flash my car with a Jestr M1 flash, and was spiking to 22psi and tapering down to ~17psi. it was also fluctuating if you stepped on the gas ~4000rpm. with the boost controller, i'm spiking to 22psi and tapering down to 20psi. the difference is easily noticeable.

dingo
04-18-2007, 10:58 AM
I get a custom tune of the car done on the dyno and boost is controlled very well, definately no need for an MBC. This isn't a generic tune thrown onto any Evo that comes in, custom tuned to suit particular mods.

Once its done I will show you the boost "curve".

Was the same situation with the Rex.

tuffguy
04-20-2007, 07:25 PM
I'm definitely interested. Most cars' solenoids can't hold boost as well as an MBC. LMK what it's peaking to, and what it's tapering down to.

Will they be using EcuFlash or EcuTek?

dingo
04-22-2007, 12:00 AM
Neither Ecuflash or Ecutek - its a new local company that is doing retunes of WRXs/Evos.

At this stage its only Perth cars that can get this service.

Will keep you posted.

dingo

A few mates and I organised a trackday yesterday, couple of pics and some onboard video footage from my car.

Amazingly effective on a track, and alot better than the WRX was - very impressed. And remember this was on street rubber (I had slicks for the WRX) and with no performance mods.

Exhaust, tune and maybe cams should happen in the next couple of weeks.

Sideways action? I only saw understeer ;)

You've got to start throwing the car into the turn and let the electronics sort everything out for ya.

That track looks like it would be a blast in a shifter kart.

dingo
04-24-2007, 11:18 AM
The wheels were full lock to the right and I went left across the track....trust me it wasn't understeer, very rare to get understeer in the Evo.

Remember, first time out with this car - I didn't know its limits so obviously didn't push it as hard as i could've.

Easy to talk about it on the net obviously, different thing to get out there and put it into practice. :D

sorry dingo, but from the video it does seem like some understeer. I'm sure it felt different from the seat of the pants, but there was no opposite lock... :?

Anywho, nice vid. It seems like your having alot of fun with the car, and you are being nice to it as well. I expected to see you beating it to death, but you were gentle with the clutch, throttle, and you wernt buzzing the piss outta the motor. Very cool :good:

Got my rims powdercoated this week - just a fan of black wheels (looks stealthy and race-spec IMO).

With the dark tint and rear wing also black I think its a nice look.

Also added the black plates MU 53 WA = AW35UM backwards. :P (had to end in WA and have 2 letters/2 numbers)

Tomei front and dump pipe and then Trust/Greddy the rest of the way.

What I don't really like is the air deflector on top of the windows :? all the taxis here have it... and doesn't look nice at all :bah: just my opinion though

Me either - but it came on the car and its a damn mission to get it off, the sticky stuff they used is very tough. So until I find the time and patience to sit down and take it all off I'll leave it. :D

Brake cleaner will eat it off, as will WD40. Though, I'm not sure what either one of them could do to paint.

Bit of an update....

Swapped wheels with a mate for a week or so (18" Work Emotions - pics below), sticker front number plate rather than that stupid bracket, Tomei front/dump pipe and Trust catback exhaust.

The turbo-back exhaust made a HUGE difference, seriously quick car now - be close to the 400hp mark.

Unfortunately the stock clutch let go yesterday so that will need changing soon - slipping as soon as I hit boost now. Difficult job on the Evo, so I'm looking at $1600 AUD.

This also means teh ECU tune has to wait, as obviously no point putting it on the dyno with the clutch in such a sad state.

Will update once clutch and tune are done (few weeks to a month I hope), for now no boost and gentle driving. :(

wow, I like this red/black combination

nice wheels, shame about the stock clutch, but I don't think it would last any longer with this setup anyway

Those rims look pretty good.if you like them are you swapping them with your mate or something?

no pics of the exhaust?

As far as the clutch is concerned, it really is the only weak spot on evos as far as i know. A friend of mine has an evo 8 hitting close to 360 whp and his clutch he's had to replace the clutch 3 times already, and he's working on his 4th. Funny thing is, he doesn't autocross or drive the snot out of it. Everything else though is bulletproof according to him.

Haha no, we've already swapped back now. He needed stock rims/tyres to pass compliance/import exam so we did the swap until that was over.

Exhaust pics, not much to see really...but I'll try and get something for you. :D

He's right! The drivetrain is bulletproof, but this was bound to happen - I'm going an Exedy of some sort which should hold up to what I have planned down the line.

Haha, yeah, thats the way to go. Just make sure to invest in the clutch more than the ecu and engine, because you can drive with less power, but you can't drive without a clutch. Those wheels are veeeeeeeery nice, btw. You're not considering getting the BBS wheels that came with the MR (atleast they did in stateside)?

The car is looking good.

On the clutch situation my buddy just got this one put on his car and it is insanely stiff but will hold the potential that comes with a GT37R

I had the car on the dyno (rolling road as some of you call it) on Thursday night for an ECU tune.

Some issues with boost meant figures were "only" 300hp and 420Nm at all 4 wheels - which is FQ400 territory (bit more actually). Only holding 1.7bar from 4000-4700rpm and then dies off to 1.4bar, so there might be the need for an EBC although my tuner says he might have a fix for it next week.

So expect slightly higher numbers (horsepower anyway, peak torque shouldn't change) once this is sorted - will keep you posted.

Goes VERY hard now (we've seen what an FQ400 can do vs Murcielago) and just yesterday I won a motorkhana event in it agianst 9 other mates to take out the prize money. 2nd place was an 06 STi, 1.2sec behind at the end of the days 4 courses, very proud of myself and the car. :D

TT
07-08-2007, 04:25 AM
300 or 400 hp? An FQ400 produces obviously 400 :P

spanky
07-08-2007, 07:16 AM
Have any footage of the motokhana?

gis
07-08-2007, 07:21 AM
He said at the wheels, dingo's car will probably be close to 400hp at the flywheel, therefore bein same/better than an FQ400 :)

dingo
07-08-2007, 09:47 AM
^ exactly. :D

Remember manufacturers (like Mitsubishi with the FQ400) qoute flywheel horsepower, not power at the wheels as is measured by a dyno.

An LP640 doesn't have 640hp AT THE WHEELS. ;)

Holy shit, 8000 USD - too cheap for an Evo 8, gotta be something wrong with it surely! I paid over $40,000 USD for mine - 8MR so its better/more expensive but still...

Nah I don't do any of the work myself (not mechanically gifted unfortunately) - but I'm good mates with the local tuner/workshop so I get my work done at "reduced rates" ;) Parts however I still have to pay full price for. :(

hahaha he said it was his sons but now he is in college and he bought him a newer one and wanted to get rid of the Evo. so i have no idea. my friend saw it and said it looked really nice. im now looking at a Prelude, 240SX, or Integra. something fun to drive.

im not very mechanically gifted either i just love cars. and thats good to have reduced prices. what does the Evo have on it now?

dingo
07-19-2007, 11:49 AM
Good plan!!

THe only parts I've changed so far on the Evo are heavy duty clutch, full turbo back exhaust (Trust), intake, lowered springs and an ECU retune.

Went for a trip down south over the weekend with a few mates and found an awesome road to do high speed driving - decided to max out the Evo, had to see it hit limiter hehe.

270kmh at redline in 6th gear - not bad for a rally bred car designed for cornering and point to point driving. My passenger didn't get a clear shot of 270 so 265-267kmh (165mph) will have to do for the record books. :)

It got there bloody quickly too, very impressed with the car. I LOVE EVOS!! :D

Yeah I was a little surprised too as I'd never had it above ~220 before, not that its a major factor as I won't be hitting those speeds very often. Now that I've done it no point risking it again.

gis - you should know me better, video was taken from outside as I flew past - just gotta wait for the guy to edit it. ;)

I did a little math on your gear ratios, tyre sizes and rpms... you were a gnats ball hair away from geared terminal velocity.

Its the 6 speeds you see, every one is so used to the 150-ish mph top end of the 5 speed - but the 6 speed looks to be good for 166mph at 7000rpm.

Good show.

I've kept the stock wheels and putting some slick tyres on them for track work - much faster and saves my street tyres from being worn out.
